Life would be simple in the forest except for Cyril Sneer. And his life would be simple except for The Raccoons.

Silent Alarm is literally a perfect album and everything they did after wasn't anywhere near as good. They really should've just broken up after the first album.

A Weekend in the City was okay I guess, and the Silent Alarm remix album has a few really good remixes on it (like the Death From Above one), but aside from that all their other material isn't memorable in the least.

You shut your mouth. Silent Alarm, Weekend in the City, and Intimacy were all fantastic albums.

Four sucked though, yeah.

yup, totally agree with this. I love Kele's voice and wish he had just gone on to have a solo career doing the electronic music stuff he clearly loves; how great would it have been if he had gone on to have starring features on, like, Disclosure records?

I feel like there are a bunch of mid-2000s rock bands that had this problem, but they're by far the most extreme dropoff. Franz Ferdinand is the obvious other comparison but I actually really like some of their later stuff; honestly their only problem is when they try to go "back to basics." Their new album is shockingly good for like "band settling into middle age and getting a few dance-punk tricks that'll play well to festival crowds just there to see the hits."

Kind of a crosspost but I finally listened to Fickle Friends' new album and it's real good. Favorite album of the year so far.

Fighting words. I really liked our love to admire and the move towards more cinematic type music. Carlos D is still one of my favorite bassists ever.

Paul banks lyrics were always odd but I thought Our love to admire had Paul’s most personal lyrics

(ps. it doesn't illustrate my point, but I feel the need to mention that Tiësto's remix of "Winterbreak" is really good)

Is it just female vocals and 80s-influenced production? Is this a movement? Is there a name for it? Is it just derivative? Who else is doing this?

If this is the one I've heard on KCRW, all I could think was why? It also confused the hell out of me for a second. Like, I know this song but this isn't the song I know.

Oh the new Jack White is so bad. When I first heard "over and over" on Sirius XMU I legit thought they were playing a Rage Against the Machine song.

It's a piece of JUNK!
Jack White's hip-hop credibility is a roller coaster. First a collaboration with Insane Clown Posse, then contributions to A Tribe Called Quest's last album, and now this.

Also, "my hip-hop credibility is a roller coaster" could be one of his lyrics.

i’m a little shocked how rough the album is, though i haven’t followed him post white stripes very much so maybe the slide in quality is more understandable to people who have?

I haven't heard the new one yet, but his other two solo albums were like... This is fine, but I'm not sure I need any more Jack White in my life. And they kinda made me retroactively like The Dead Weather and even some White Stripes stuff less, which is a shame. He does a certain thing very well, but we're hitting the point of diminishing returns for sure.

Man, I was not a fan of the new Tune-Yards album. Having just seen them touring for it live tonight reminded me that Merrill can sell just about anything with her voice and stage presence, but still the juxtaposition of her older songs with the new stuff just threw the shittiness of the new stuff into sharp relief.
