Meanwhile Grischuk slipped on a banana peel. So going into the last round it we're going to have Caruana half a point ahead of Karjakin and Mamedyarov. This would be an interesting dynamic because I think that Caruana has the breaker over Mamedyarov, Mamedyarov has the breaker against Karjakin, and Karjakin has the breaker over Caruana. This means that Caruana probably has to push for a win with black against Grischuk.

2 great endings in those games. So fabi and shak both have to win with black tomorrow, karjarkin has to win with white but it's against ding who hasn't lost a game

So going into the last round it's:

Caruana 8
Mamedyarov and Karjakin 7.5
Ding 7

Grischuk - Caruana
Ding - Karjakin
Mamedyarov - Kramnik

Last time I remember the last round being like this was when Carlsen and Kramnik were tied going into the last round and both lost.

Only Karjarkin has white of the top three tomorrow as well.

Should be some good chess played either way.

Caruana loses all tiebreaks hate but has the half point edge, all three have to play for a win.

Grischuk can kind of hilariously sandbag Caruana by, after blowing that endgame today to Mamedyarov, playing for a quick draw in the final round.

Karjakin has to try to beat Ding, who, aside from that game where Fabi totally blew a win, has looked incredibly solid all tournament.

Shak is playing Kramnik so who even has any idea what will happen in that game.

Lev - So is irrelevant except maybe for Lev trying to end a calamitous tournament on a dignified note.

If you’re Caruana, what the heck do you do? You’ve got black and lose all the tiebreakers, but hold a half point lead. Will Grischuk just want a quick draw and go home or will he feel obliged to fight you?

At least the guys in second know they need to win.

You want to play for an unbalanced position that will let you play on for a while, and allow for you to keep play through multiple transformations. You don't have to be so desperate as to try to play for a win out of the opening. Another thing I've seen in the past is for the top player to just take the draw quickly to put the pressure on the other players. But I don't know how wise that is staring down two potential tiebreaks.

e: Svidler posted this link with all the breaker possibilities http://eji.com/chess/index.htm

Yeah they can get up and walk around between moves. In some tournaments you'll often see other players coming over to look at a position

Personally i think caruana has to go for a win, if either of his rivals win he doesn't win the tournament.

BurningStone

Caruana does have the advantage in that if he decides he wants a draw Grischuk probably won’t insist on fighting. I wonder what mood Kramnik will be in; he’s been playing oddly.

For Fabi maybe the Petrov? He won twice with Black early.

BurningStone

He may very well, but that gives Grischuk the option of forcing a draw, which I assume he would.

I’m a little surprised they don’t play out the tiebreakers.

It is a Petrov, though Grischuk played the (superior, in my opinion) 3.d4 line.

Caruana's position would... need to change quite a bit for him to lose.

e: Also, Karjakin looks like he's in trouble against Ding.

That is easily the only mean thing I’ve ever heard from JB

By the way, re. the tweets in the OP, is Magnus as much of an rear end in a top hat as that makes him sound, or just a nerdy guy trying to be witty in a second language? He usually seems quite gracious but then he has these moments of total douchiness, like the tweets about America ‘buying’ the best Olympiad team
