Were the weird ads because it was on a Monday afternoon? Do the people who buy Sunday ad time get their spots moved when the race moves? I have no idea how that works.

Yeah I've been seeing those cheap rear end kids toy ads since last year at least, and had the same thought. I never even pay attention when ratings are mentioned, because that doesn't include digital services, which is idiotic. Cord cutting is real and it's only going to increase over time. IndyCar and NASCAR need to get with the it and set up a goddamn OTT streaming service like F1 is supposed to be implementing this year. I'd rather pay (insert racing league here) $15/month during race season and have access to all the new and old races and extras than dick around with cable TV or whatever else and their garbage scheduling issues. Making your sport easy to watch with on demand and streaming services seems like an obvious step in the right direction. Or maybe the track owners can convince congress to subsidize their poo poo like every other major league sport for billions of dollars every year.

I'd pay for ARCA/dirt racing streaming. Also I seem to recall tracks get pretty generous tax breaks, though not the direct help that other sports get.

Dude, I'm not paying for yet another service. This is the bullshit of cord cutting, you end up paying for 10 different services, all for $20/month, and you pay just as much as you were before for 100 channels. I get my TV through my PS4 for $45/month. If I have to pay for another app just to watch NASCAR I'm going to throw a loving poo poo fit since I got Playstation Vue just to watch my loving sports. There's no chance in hell I'd pay for F1 or Indy since I already get them on Vue. On a different topic to complain about: the coverage sucks. I'm not talking about Joy, DW, or Gordon, I'm talking about the shooting of the race. Since I've been on a kick lately of watching old races, I have found it interesting how the direction of races has changed over the years. This isn't news to you guys, but today's races are shot horribly! I blame it on having too many options for the director to choose from. We cut from one close up shot to another, and never get a good sense of what's going on. We rush from one in car camera, to another door/wheel camera, to a "wide" shot, back to wall mounted cam, all within 30 seconds or less. I didn't even notice it anymore, until I really paid attention to the old races. The wide shots from races up until 2001 give you such a better perspective on the action, you can really get a feel for the flow of the race. Today, with dozens of cameras to choose from, the director is constantly switching from one to the next, all zoomed in tight, and it leaves the viewer disoriented to how the action fits into the larger picture. Even when they use a "wide" shot, I was surprised how tight the shot really is. At Martinsville, multiple times they used the camera at the top of the tower and followed the action, but the shot was so tight that you couldn't get any feel for what was around them. All of this can be best summed up last week by that loving camera mounted on the outside pit wall. They used it multiple times to show the action on the track, and while it was cool it was useless in conveying any information to the viewer. I'm not trying to be all "the old ways were better", some of the camera work from the old races is loving awful, but today's issue is entirely of NASCAR's own making. Zoom out a little (though I'm sure sponsors hate that), user fewer specialty cameras, and hold your shots longer. This doesn't seem like rocket science. Which is why illegal streams will always be an option worth undertaking. Yes, I want to pay to watch what you're offering. No, I don't want to pay more to watch what you're offering than we've already had to over the years. I know there have been certain people who have been vocal about Indycar going full OTT with its streaming service, but at the end of the day the easiest and cheapest way to get a lot of people watching your product is to have as many races as possible on OTA broadcast television. I'd watch a race on TV—with commercials!—over a sketchy stream any day of the week.

Sure, if you follow like a half dozen different sports series, paying for everything separately can be a tall order, and package deals are more for you. I watch NASCAR, Indycar, and F1. That's it. I'd like to watch their ladder series more often as well, but coverage is sparse (except for NASCAR, they do a good job with Xfinity and trucks I think, compared to other series). I would gladly subscribe to a service for each of those during their seasons instead of a cable package. No commercials, viewing options, archives, ladder series included, is just icing on the cake.

It's not just sports, it's all the other poo poo you need to buy to watch that one show you like: Netflix Amazon Prime HBO GO Playstation Vue MLB App NASCAR App etc It's not unthinkable that you would need all of these apps/services, or more, to replace what you use to get in one place- and you very well could be paying more for it. Eventually consumers are going to either revolt, or just give up because they need to have 10 apps. I really don't see how OTT services are going to be profitable enough by themselves that cable television will be cut out. If the NFL has struggled to launch their own service, then I don't have faith it anyone else pulling it off.

See, I don't think things like cable television need to be cut out, I just think they should offer OTT as well. If you wanna pay $50-100 per month to have a ton of channels and movies and your shows and whatever, that's great, go you. I'd rather go OTT for the stuff I wanna watch, and turn it off when the season is over. I have never in my life paid for cable or satellite TV, I just don't watch enough to care to sign a contract or pay that much. If I really feel like catching some show, I'll shell out for Netflix or turn on one of Prime's channels for a month or something. There's no reason not to have both available. Especially when your traditional TV audience is dwindling.

They are still big enough that traditional broadcasters pay them billions without hesitating, and important enough that fans will subscribe to whatever they need to watch NFL.
