Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

Big write up about John K’s (creator of Ren & Stimpy) long history of grooming/preying on young girls.

I’d long heard him to be a creepy dude, but I didn’t know it was that bad.

two things (that are not the really fuckin' creepy pictures of John K with teenage girls throughout the article) I would like to particularly point out that stuck out to me:

quote:

Although sexual abuse allegations against Kricfalusi have never been made public before, his relationship with Byrd has been an open secret within animation — so open that “a girl he had been dating since she was fifteen years old” was referenced briefly in a book about the history of Ren & Stimpy.

WHAT THE gently caress PEOPLE

quote:

As Byrd grew up in the studio, her coworkers, many of whom were not much older than she was, were aware of the teen’s romantic relationship with their boss. Mora got an internship at Spumco in 1997, around the age of 24, and when he first started seeing Byrd around the studio, “I was like, ‘Who’s that little girl?’” he said. The relationship was odd to him, but it seemed to be accepted at the studio, where former employees say Kricfalusi fostered a libertine atmosphere in which taking offense was itself offensive. They were making shows with sexual themes; there were raunchy nude drawings on display. Mora said Kricfalusi left out a drawing he made of Byrd, naked, with a dog ejaculating on her.

This is such a common loving thing. Those people who are all about "freedom of speech" and "oh you snowflake you are so offended which is my goal because offending people is my right" are not always hiding something, but they're definiitly aiding and abetting guys like John K who use the idea of "freedom" to justify really loving gross poo poo like dating 16 year olds.

Yeah this one surprised me less because I remember reading that at the time and it's put every single story about the man in a new light since. Even the quiet warnings about the dude made him seem like he just kept searching until he found someone to groom into his ideal.

Re: the John K story above, one of the things that really hit me like a guy punch is one of the women profiled is Katie Rice, who is the creator of Camp Wedonwancha, a very funny and very sweet comic. I’ve been following it for a long time, so it came as quite the surprise when I saw her pop up in the article, as I didn’t even realize she came up through Spumco.

People haven’t always been as obsessed with pedos as they are now. It just wasn’t as common a topic as in 2018.

If Dan Schneider really is going down, the other big thing I heard about that seems legit is Jared Leto, and it’s super hosed up. International sex trafficking, trading women like gifts, dictator/steven segal level transgressions.

yeah i tend to stop following these sorts of rumors when they have some sort of organized child trading ring. Not that I think it couldn't exist but i feel like they would never get revealed even in circumstances like this. We've heard similar things about Bryan Singer and the people he hangs around with but they never got revealed if they're true.

that said I'm fairly confident that Jared Leto has had sex with an underaged girl at some point in his life as a celebrity.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Brass Eye was satirising the media's and public's sensationalised reaction to paedophilia almost twenty years ago. It seems more likely that powerful people were immune to the panic surrounding the subject because for a long time, the stereotypical child molester was shown as a creepy loner with no friends rather than a highly succesful and well-respected person.

When it hits the music industry, it will be unstoppable. Dudes don't even think about playing the guitar until they learn it's the best access to teen girls.

It’s hitting the music industry. Brand new. Crystal castles. Real estate. Gas lamp killer (more known for flying lotus bad defense). That New York next hot band that was about to blow up before all the bad poo poo came out about them. Way more I’m sure but those were just off the top of my head.

Edit. R Kelley even more than before obviously as well

Mostly niche bands though (I mean, at this point almost every guitar-based band counts as a niche band). Young and in the Way and Cheap Girls are a couple more. It'll be interesting to see if any major pop stars get taken down though, they still feel very insulated. I mean, Chris Brown still has a career.

BUT MY LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS ON THE FORUMS!
It’s worth noting that rappers like 6ix9ine and xxxtentacion are blowing the gently caress up right now and R Kelly and Chris Brown are doing just fine for all of their notoriety, though, so the music scene clearly has a looooong loving way to go on this front. Same goes for a lot of the indie/alt/post punk artists that middle aged white dudes love and who escaped scrutiny years ago despite credible allegations.

Just because some bands for gentle millennials and sad queer kids got theirs doesn’t mean that the music industry’s experiencing nearly the same reckoning as other areas.

The music scene esp has a long way to go because, unfortunately, a lot of the teenagers getting preyed on at these shows are going there looking to hook up with a rock star. That doesn't make them not victims but it does make things a hell of a lot murkier when it comes to people speaking out against the lovely behaviour of these musicians.

I also feel like people can be bigger superfans of musicians than of actors/directors/producers. Like yeah Kevin Spacey has been in a lot of good movies, but nobody is going to go to bat for him like they would for, say, David Bowie. Maybe it's because music is a lot more of a personal statement, and thus a better representation of that person, than acting, which has an inherent element of fakeness to it? I dunno, but the sentimentality around even the most mediocre of musicians will shield them in ways that very few actors can ever achieve.

I think music is arguably more personal for the audience than film is. And I say that as a huge loving movie nerd who has had deep emotional connections to certain films. But music is different. If I’m feeling blue or need to get jazzed, I don’t throw a flick on to accompany those emotions. I put my earbuds in and listen to a song that enhances whatever vibe I’m in. There’s more distance there between a film and a films fans than there is between musician and their fans, I think.

Perhaps it has something to do with the immediacy of the medium.

Yup. Also it seems much more prevalent, at least when you're talking about these guys' self admitted excesses. Hollywood seems a lot more hush hush, with music acts it's right in the open. For example:

Music transports the listener directly into a character's head; the lyrics are their internal monologue, the music is their emotions. Even purely instrumental songs can work this way. Movies are inherently about watching someone else, so it needs to a lot more work to become so intimate. It might be why I've seen many people say how important a musician is to them, while I've rarely seen anyone speak about an actor in the same way.

Winger's first hit was "Seventeen". a lot of people are far more likely to turn a blind eye to musicians being sex pests because there's definitely more of a groupie factor than there is with other forms of entertainment. It's somehow more accepted- not that it's right, but that kinda appears to be the case.
