idk if just outright saying that location is the primary reason is kosher, other answers like "better culture fit" or "better likelihood of turning the job into a career" seem like they might invite weird followup questions

i think one of the big mistakes i made when i was looking to end my super long commute was saying "yeah i think i might kill myself if i have to keep driving 3 hours to work" when asked why i was leaving

do not recommend

edit: also just finished 2 assessments of grammar and basic math :downsbravo:

if you’re a computer touched and you’ve been at your job longer than 18 months just say you feel like it’s time for you to move on to new challenges or some poo poo

like nothing you can say to that question will make them like you better, it’s literally just an opportunity to reveal that you’re insufferable to work with and/or a flake. any answer which does not give the recruiter an excuse to disqualify you is a good one

People who are looking for something that the new job offers are more attractive than people who are trying to get away from something at their current job.

absolutely but you should give a more honest answer if you’re at a real face-to-face interview, especially if it’s someone you’ll be working with. if you were putting up with heavy bullshit that isn’t the type of bullshit you can handle you should be open about it so that the interviewer can lay it on softly that you’re barking up the wrong tree.

if they’re a *good* interviewer they’ll also use that opportunity to hint at what kind of bullshit you’ll be expected to deal with but don’t expect it

i've decided to leave my job about a month from now, i'm the only person with the knowledge needed to field support requests after the other devs were laid off and the work shipped to elbonia, any suggestions how to break it to my boss who I'm on good terms with? :( (i don't expect to have an offer in hand)

don’t broach the topic unless you are ready to leave

like right then on the spot. being fired isn’t an uncommon consequence of resigning

you wouldn't believe how many people i've had to explain this to. they seem to think that since i know i'm out in the next little while i can go give multiple-months notice as a "heads-up" and work will just like, appreciate it and not totally eject me from the building.

my previous employer was a huge consulting company and they brought in a ping pong table that couldn't be used during office hours and an unplugged keurig machine that were both placed near the office entrance like a sort of innovation totem to emphasize that we were actually a startup

oh thats not a problem i already brought up the possibility and agreed to "wait and see". there were circumstances that forced the subject

A company that turned me down for an intermediate position last summer when I was unemployed (from a rather bullshit interview btw, I was asked to code review code I no longer had access to) hit me up on LinkedIn yesterday and now they want to interview me for a senior position. I'm going to listen to their recruiter and see what they say, but honestly I think I'm only doing it to gauge my value on the market.

we just had a potential intern decline an offer because I, the technical interviewer was mean and had unrealistic expectations or some such (this is filtered through hr)

we asked him to reverse an array

i think he’s in for a rude awakening whenever he interviews for a “real” job

its really weird trying to transition from a field with 10+ years of experience to something else.

suddenly youre barely qualified and struggling to get face time for the second time in your life. all the while recruiters and sites and trying to suck you back into the old thing
