Dance Officer posted:I'm AWOL. Unfortunately you seem to have disappeared into Sol; 10 Feb 2054, 1441hrs With the Terran movements away from Earth, Mars finally requests that the Titan Free State scramble their single squadron built around the captured IC Battlecruiser General Motors. However the TFS is still out at Saturn and from this point will take days to reach the inner system. At Earth the bulk of the Terran home fleet is watched by the Martian DSTS departing from its Luna dockyards and heading northerly. While not a direct course for Mars the bearing is quite provocative. With the large Terran fleet deployments (especially of light craft) to Nova Sol in Earth orbit only a single battleship division and a pair of light carriers remains. The force however is huge comprising twenty-one capital ships, four fleet carriers, two light carriers, sixteen cruisers and many lighter escorts. Suddenly the Martian DSTS station (the light blue circled asteroid south of Jupiter) monitoring the IC picks up many drives throttling up to high power. It seems an IC task force has been cruising at low power outbound from Jupiter on a south-easterly course for some time now. The Terran and IC fleets projected courses intersect in the inner asteroid belt about 180m km from Mars. Two fast Battlecruisers, two fleet carriers, four heavy cruisers, four missile cruisers and a large number of missile escorts make up the IC fleet. The slow missile escorts and carriers are restricting the whole fleet to 2300kps. At Mars, Command authorises a second large fighter strike to form up and move to assist the Sol Newfleet. Twenty four Phobos bombers and six Gallileo scouts. They depart on an intercept course for the Terran fleet to assist Sebmojo's attack. 10 Feb, 1454hrs The 100m km range of the new ship to ship missiles is shown by the large blue rings, as Sebmojo's task force turns onto a direct intercept with the invasion force the Terrans turn away to the south-west. Maybe they are finally spooked. 10 Feb, 1509hrs Fifteen minutes passes and Sebmojo continues his attack run. The Terran Newfleet is separated from their invasion force by nearly forty million kilometers and at this rate will not be able to prevent Sebmojo from firing on them. Oddly the Transports do not turn back towards the safety of the Terran fleet and continue to head away from Mars. Sebmojo muses that they must have hugely underestimated the range of the new Martian ship to ship missiles thanks to their active sensors and large warheads and expect to be able to use the transports to bait the Martian fleet away from Mars. 10 Feb, 1511hrs Two minutes later the Mars DSTS picks up thermal signatures from twenty four Terran fighters launching from the invasion force escorts. The drive signatures match those of the fighters that you skirmished with earlier in the day and they have no doubt been repaired and rearmed. 10 Feb, 1512hrs A minute later the Terran light carriers come about and turn towards Earth with a pair of destroyers in escort. Sebmojo plots his attack vectors and orders all ships to bring up their shields. 10 Feb, 1516hrs In response the Battleships and Light Cruisers of the Terran Newfleet activate their own shields. Very fast charging shields... Very strong shields... Very strong shields. 10 Feb, 1524hrs After several minutes the Terran ships reach maximum shield capacity of sixty for the Battleships and thirty two for the Light Cruisers. For reference the Martian ships with the toughest shields, Pollux class Heavy Cruisers have forty-five shield strength and Azreal Destroyers have twenty. Sebmojo is nearly in missile range... The Pit; 10 Feb, 1525hrs The small Kinnara class ships are falling out of sensor range while the entreaties to the Terran ships in Nova Sol and the Ranginui forces go out. All are still on direct courses for their respective gravitational survey points. Saros fucked around with this message at 15:59 on Mar 20, 2018 |

The IC behavior looks like they have sided with the UT. And those are some mighty strong shields... Hope we win, but I gotta admit it'll be funny if the Terrans finally defeats Mars over some coked up 'prime of ambition' plan right after we gained major leverage with them.

No reason to get worked up about the shields just yet. The ones on the BB are strong, but not shockingly so for a BB. It's about the same as those on our Hellas. We also don't know how much tonnage UT had to spend on the generators, or if there is significant armor to back it up. The real problem is the sheer tonnage of UT compared to us, especially if they combine with IC.

If you want to hem and haw, do so over not requesting any more tonnage return to Sol, otherwise have faith good comrades in the power of the Martian Home fleet and 3rd fleets! Also, in good time our newfleet forces will return from the battle with the UT's forces attacking Ceres and will be an additional aid if such is required. Besides, now's when we try to see who's actually in charge (if anyone) on Earth itself, as basically the entire UT fleet left Earth, they might have been unable to dislodge the civvie government on the ground.

The knowledge died with their ships. I would bet that the crabs don’t actually know where humans come from. If we jump into Nova Sol while in their sight, we’ll draw them in. Just saying.

If we send the Ranginui fleet into The Pit do we think the crabs will be able to see them jump? If not, using the Rangi fleet to hunt down the jump survey ships before they locate the JP may be our best option.

It's likely that they were completely taken aback by human ships in The Pit because they had already surveyed it and found no other jump points. That's the only reason I can think of for them to survey again now. This seems to indicate that the jump network has been changed very recently.

That's not quite correct, once you have observed a ship using a jump point you can use it freely.

Well, A) the fartkrabs obviously have been active during the jump network restructuring, going on Facility's data. B) they had a dedicated rapid-survey vessel available. C) they had not re-surveyed The Pit since it was connected to ranginui and nova sol. A and B seems to indicate they are aware of the changing nature of the jump network; B and C seems to indicate that the change has been very recent because why keep such a vessel around if you are not routinely re-surveying systems?
|
# ? Mar 22, 2018 06:04 |

Oh right, if things are changing that rapidly maybe we can hold them off for long enough for the network to shift again. Speedy might have information on how to accelerate such a change or how long we need to hold off the Kasag. Pity we can't gather all of humanity for suicide strikes on survey vessels...

Finally caught up after reading the entire drat thing in a couple days. Great stuff! Spacedworf me! Dunno if its applicable here, but last I ran into guys like these I found their ships surprisingly vulnerable to boarding. Park a nice helping of boarding crafts on a jumping point, let em jump trough and board. Nice and easy, now you got a huuuge carrier to play with. Also, I suggest building a survey fleet based on survey fighters and using carriers to survey systems. You can get a whole lot of milage out of that. I can post some designs later. Dumping 50 boarding shuttles onto them the second they hit the JP might actually work pretty well. Do we really have any significant boarding forces on-hand, though?

Yup, they are tough bastards those crap marines, thing is, most ships don't have marines on them. They have crew. Meaning there is a certain inherit advantage to boarding. We can bolt on a bunch of cryo marine pods to fighter engines to make a bunch of fighter drop pods that goes fast. We can then produce plenty of them with fighter production. The tricky part is producing enough marines in time. Wonder how marines we got laying around? Once we zerg rush the mother ships and take them over the enemy fighters wont last long as they wont have anywhere to land and refuel.

Also, maybe start hiring mariners among the gastronomers and foodies by letting it slip that the enemy tastes rather good after being cooked in their own shell. Then just hand them a pile of lasers and point them in direction of the giant can of crabs heading our way. Ah, I can already imagine it; parading the ginormous alien ship over earth with the MCF flag plastered on it and some clever slogans written in big enough letters to be readable planetside.
