Trig Discipline posted:Man, I was not a fan of the new Tune-Yards album. Having just seen them touring for it live tonight reminded me that Merrill can sell just about anything with her voice and stage presence, but still the juxtaposition of her older songs with the new stuff just threw the shittiness of the new stuff into sharp relief. It's really bad. The sound is just lifeless, lacking the groove that Tune-Yards was known for. And the lyrical content is tedious at best. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever released my favorite song of 2018 so far. Great jangle pop for a summer day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqZPbcJQC2Q Well, it was my favorite song of the year so far, until this song from Snail Mail gave me pause. It's classical. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7tnTucP1UM

Saw Alvvays on Friday. It was my first time seeing them live, and they really put on a great show. It seemed like the bass was mixed a little heavy, but aside from that it was cool. Everybody singing along to every song. That's always fun. Now all I have on the radar is Hinds.

I've been coming back to this song a lot this year by Blis. They seem to be an odd genre, but fit here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Tttp6Berg

Here's an example If Joe Blow says "Yo, you think like Avagio" You'll respond "No, that's an insult, yo" "I live in a vacuum, I ain't got but no one" Listen up, son

the boarding house reach singles actually got stuck in my head despite having only listened to the album one and a half times, so maybe it’s a grower, but it still feels like an album made out of transition or interlude tracks, plus a baffling faux-rap boogie. fantano isn’t the only high mark recently, it’s apparently more divisive than the initial rush of negative reviews hinted at. NME and Consequence of Sound were both positive as well.

Fantano is such a boob. His tastes sucks. Props for being so nerdy about band trivia though I guess (I am sure he has a prep sheet before every review but yeah he does good with that part).

Is he not one of those alt-right dudes? I thought someone said that a while ago. As to whether that has any bearing on his music tastes whatever. Back when I still watched his youtubes I learned about Kero Kero Bonito so that's...something that happened.

Huh well poo poo; my apologies to Fantano.

Fantano's a vegan leftist. He had a dumb meme channel on YouTube that's gone now, but that doesn't make him an alt-righter despite what that article said about him. I'm not his biggest fan or anything. I disagree with a lot of his opinions on albums. But he does cover a huge quantity of albums across a wide array of genres, so I end up watching a lot of his content because much of it is about something I'm interested in or related to it at least.

His ultra-fanboy love for Sunn 0)) yet pretentious bashing of several modern amazing albums is why he's a boob.

I mean I see how someone could like the Jack White album. It's not unlistenable. And to his credit it does kind of sound different from the thing he always does. But I'm still kind of Jack Whited out.

Someone (probably here) described Jack White as their favorite Johnny Depp character and I feel like that is the best comparison/point of understanding you can have for him and his music/mannerisms.

My friends who I normally make doom metal with put out this very midwestern indie record a few days ago and I think it’s good. Most people have said it sounds like “an indie rock album from 2006” but I don’t have that frame of reference, so I think of it as sounding like Into It. Over It. with more eclectic instrumentation. https://arthhur.bandcamp.com/album/come-meet-the-opposite-committee

New Hinds record this Friday. I like what I've heard so far, but then again I am a Hinds superfan. They're coming to Chicago again in May, and while I would love to see them "in the round" at Thalia Hall again, I'm happy with Lincoln Hall too.

So yeah, an Arctic Monkeys album from the last 8 years or so. EDIT: Looks like this may violate the rule about talking too much about well established bands, so here's some El mató a un policía motorizado. Sonically, they're sort of a Spanish language (Argentina) version of the last two Spoon albums, with some more emphasis on big, arena-ready choruses. Even if you don't speak Spanish, you'll know when the emotions swell. They're pretty big in South America, I gather, but who can tell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NX7LPvIUrs El Tesoro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IuSX8tP34s El mundo extraño The Modern Leper fucked around with this message at 16:34 on Apr 5, 2018 |
