Hi there! I'm looking to run a 13th Age game pretty much* straight from the core book. Have one goon player confirmed, and need 2-4 more. It would be Mondays at 5 PM PST on roll20+discord, unless people prefer to just type in roll20 with no audio.

I've played a fair amount of 13th Age but this will actually be my first time running it. Official supplements for chargen are fine, you might want to ask about 3rd party stuff (it'll probably be fine). Reskinning for flavor is highly encouraged. As far as campaign theme, I'd prefer to have player characters first and kind of work off that. A lot of the flavor I have in mind will be from tweaking icon lore and their domains, and monstrous races/politics. Possibly a lot of screentime on Drakkhenall or people from there, unless the PCs lean towards different directions with their characters.

*A couple of mechanical tweaks I'd like to do for this game:
-No points distributed for Backgrounds. Instead, choose an Origin/Homeland, Profession/Trade/Skill, and Social Standing/Status/Role and just rp it. Will probably use advantage for needed rolls and adjust DCs to compensate.
-Icon rolls made to influence situations as they come up. Relationships will probably be worked more organically in the story than rolled at session top or bottom.

Icon stuff: Most of the Icons are somewhat removed from the world and can be hard to reach directly. There was a war between several of them a few generations ago and still bad blood between fiefdoms and peoples because of it. No one has seen the Archmage's true form/in person for hundreds of years. Some icons are more likely to be stirring pots behind the scenes than others.

First session is slated for 4/16, and will probably be half meet and greet/premise setting with a bit of intro gameplay.

Hey! This sounds cool. I haven't played 13th, but I've read it in a cursory way and I think it's pretty interesting.

Is there a good place for me to ask dumb chargen questions as I try to pull something together?

I've got pms but you could probably just post in the thread/character post if you're not sure about something.

I'm also interested, though I have zero experience with 13th Age. Going to look through the corebook now and see what jumps out to me.

So I'm thinking maybe I should soooort of set a premise for people to provide a bit of direction? I'm going to say you guys can pick as a group whether you are all:

-Relic/Treasure Hunters
-Hatchetpersons for Hire
-Specialist Monster Slayers (may add or tweak a mechanical quirk or two for this)
-Saving the World

It's okay, buddy. We're all in this together. :)

Yeah, I'm interested, although I'm going to need to think a bit. Probably go with a Drakkenhall background, if that's a way you want to go with the game?

Definitely. Draconians, Tieflings, Half Orcs, and other humanoid monster reskin types all have a presence there. A minority population of other non-human PC races could probably reside there as well.

For roles, I'm planning on being a wizard. I'm open to other classes to avoid stepping on toes, but figured to post my concept here before we end up with like an all-monk party or something.

I'm pondering Fighter or one of the 13 True Ways classes, since I haven't tried any of them out yet; I'll page through the book and have a look.

I'm also most tempted by a good old save the world plot. But wouldn't mind finding cool relics and stuff too.

I am considering a cleric right now, or a rogue if the party needs one.

Yeah, either is fine with me too, possibly a combo? I'll try to make my characters flexible.

Subjunctive, I'm trying to decide between fighter or necromancer right now. If you go ranger, I'll go fighter, and if you go fighter I'll go necro, unless anyone really doesn't want a necro in the party. (I'll be going the "stealing power from the Lich King" route, natch, but I know it can still be a weird class.)

You're a madman that could never work

How complex is playing a rogue? I'm thinking of being a tiefling rogue that's stolen a treasure from the Blue dragon's hoard. And has no idea what the hell it does. The book seems to think it's a tough class for a new player.

The thing with Rogue is that's it's a big mobility/movement class. If you like jumping all over the battlefield stabbin' stuff that's what you'll be doing.

Okay, Relic Hunters Save the World! My idea to get you guys together is you either start getting released from or breaking out of prison ala Elder Scrolls and we run from there. I would say since that's the direction we're going, the Profession/Trade background slot should probably be related to treasure hunting/thieving skills or ancient history type fields of study.

Also, while I'll probably type up some more detailed Icon information for the actual game thread (along with possibly updating the map), here are some tweaks to keep in mind for Icon Relationships:

-Prince of Shadows is replaced by the Lord of Pirates
-The Crusader is a Joan of Arc type, and her Grandfather served the Emperor.
-The Emperor has been sleeping in a crystal coffin in his palace for 80 years. He does not age. The Empire is run by senators and senechals.
-The Lich King resides in his tower in the Red Wastes. He admits no one, though many seek to apprentice themselves to him.
-The Orc Lord also patrols the Red Wastes and seems to have some sort of agreement to do so with the Lich King. The Great Gold Wyrm dwells somewhere in the area of The Frost Range and Dragon Wood, but is so seldom seen he's believed by many to be just a legend.
-The Archmage has not been seen (at least in his true form) for hundreds of years. His creations are sometimes encountered by travelers, explorers, and adventurers.

-Secluded Icons: High Priestess, Dwarf King, Elf Queen, Lich King, Emperor, High Druid
-Mysterious Icons: Archmage, Great Gold Wyrm, Diabolist
-Active Icons: The Three, Lord of Pirates, Crusader, Orc Lord

Sweet.

My current thinking is that my Fighter was a diplomatic escort for $court, which exposed her to court machinations and let her drink with the eavesdropping escorts from other courts; the purported location of meaningful relics was often a topic of conversation, and I made some coin on the side selling that info to relic-getters. I was blamed for either a) the leak of sensitive information, or b) abetting an assassination attempt on the Duke I was escorting. Jail resulted, and I probably don't get a holiday card from the reigning noble this year. I'm not telling anyone whether I did it or not.

Working on my OUT! Gonna get my girlfriend's 8 year old kid to help me with it tomorrow.

My current idea is a dragonic necromancer whose OUT is being the last descendant/survivor (or "survivor," depending on whether or not I decide to be Sorta Dead) of a cult based around the White, focused on giving undead freedom from servitude, a stance that eventually resulted in their getting destroyed by agents of the Lich King and/or more traditional necromancers. S/he has laid low, working as an undertaker in Drakkenhall, which is a good way to stumble upon doomed treasure hunters and their maps and plans, some of which are potentially intriguing. S/he could have been arrested for any number of things, likely petty larceny or beating someone more powerful to a loot trove -- or, if we're not starting in Drakkenhall, probably just generaly skulking about and being unsavory.

Cool, sounds awesome.

I'm thinking that my rogue tiefling guy has been based in Drakkenhall for a while, due to his pretty demonic features making him stand out too much in the rest of the empire. His life of crime eventually led to him getting a chance to steal a treasure belonging to the Blue dragon, which he promptly stashed and began trying to find a fence to sell it to. Unfortunately for him the guys he was trying to sell to were more scared of the Three than they were greedy to make a profit, and so they tipped off the guard and got him arrested. The treasure he stole is still stashed away somewhere, but he has no idea what it does or if it's even worth anything.

Still struggling with my OUT. Unless it would be the fact that he managed to steal something from one of the Three, and is still living.

How bad an idea would it be for a new player to play a Commander? The command point mechanic seems relatively straightforward, at least, and the first-level power selection is strongly guided by the book.

It should be fine. Seriously, the complexity on 13th Age classes isn't really anything to worry about unless you're new to D&D style games in general. More complex for 13th Age just means more trigger conditions and more buttons to press vs passive abilities. Just go for what looks fun.

Also, I'm thinking thinking we'll start in Drakkenhall since it's so popular for backgrounds with the party. We can either still do the prison thing, you guys can be an established group looking for treasure leads, or you can all be hired/receive a summons separately from a mysterious client if y'all feel like rp-ing out the getting to know you phase of things. Up to you guys.

Jeremore - "Only mortal to steal from The Blue and live" sounds like a fine OUT unless you think of something you'd rather do.

Okay! So the first game is scheduled for tomorrow at 5 PM PST. I will probably make the proper thread after the first session, but here is the roll20 link: https://app.roll20.net/join/3155233/H3KaSw

Before we start we'll need:
-Everyone's sheet
-A vote on whether we just type in roll20 or set up voice chat in discord (roll20s voice chat is spotty/glitchy)

Everyone who posted is invited since we're at the target party number. If anyone has any more questions in the meantime, post 'em here.

Just the normal one in the book? I meant to say something in a previous post, but I recommend either Mythweavers or just fill one out in paint and take a snapshot of it. The roll20 sheet auto-fills with incorrect math and fucks up secondary values and most macros. We always just rolled manually in the games I was in.

I meant if there was a preference with Mythweavers/Roll20/etc, so cool, I'll use the Mythweavers one. Thanks!

EDIT: Here's a Mythweavers sheet. It's pretty basic, but hopefully it should serve.
