It's nice to see that vendor support is the same for any size company. One of the programs I admin had to renew licensing for the dev environment. I emailed tye vendor got the new license and applied it. Everything worked except for one module. It was throwing a licensing error. I emailed back saying that the license was missing for the module and asked for an updated license file. I was told that wasn't the problem and I had to go through support. A week passes and they can't find any issues from my emails so I webex the support tech onto the dev server. He looks around for two minutes and says " you are missing the license for that module, get licensing to generate you a new one. "

I got sent to an out of town job at the last minute (I was already gonna be driving to another job in the area anyway) and I was joking when I got back about how people will let you in anywhere if you walk in with a clipboard and a lanyard ask them where the network rack is, without asking for any proof that you're actually supposed to be there. Turns out, I actually really wasn't supposed to be there, it was a government site where apparently we're only supposed to send techs with specific background check / security clearance certifications which I don't have yet. Whoops!

My $job-1 had a secure call center since we handled PHI and had to comply with PCI. Any time I insisted I escort a coworker to their desk where they temporarily forgot their badge (because they really had to pee or something, IDK), I was looked at like I had twelve heads and was made of purple glitter.

A friend of mine spent a day wondering what the intermittant breeze underneath his desk was a few years back. Turns out a dog tailgated through no less than six double sets of security doors to get to his office. Nobody noticed  Also this happened here a few years back.

I think a couple other goons use Manage Engine Desktop Central, but have any of you tried to migrate the server it's installed on? I tried this weekend, following the steps as laid out on their website exactly, and it very much did not work. I'm thinking of trying to just modify the VM it's on rather than moving it, but we have to move it to a newer AD domain which would entail the FQDN changing and seems like we would need to do some of the migratory work anyway...

Out of curiosity, I unplugged the T3 power supply from the wall. Sure enough, an AT&T tech was out there the next morning to plug it back in. I don't know what it costs to have it there, but apparently nobody has ever noticed that they're still paying for it.

I've told this story before, but our old change manager was really out of touch with tech, in that she hadn't done non-management since about 2001. In one of our DR meetings we mentioned that we were running a new WLAN connection to the site, and she asked if the new site was capable of handling "T1 bandwidth". When we explained 10g fibre I thought her head was going to explode.

I remember when my college had a T1 and we all oohed and ahhed over MIT's T3 connection. But I also remember having to literally dial in while living on-campus because my college infrastructure was so lovely. I'm old.

I went to university when 2Mb was top of the line domestic, we could hit 32Mb in dorms over SSH or HTTPS. Four of us rented a torrent box in Germany and downloaded 1TB per month, in 2005.

I remember asking my dad to download 10mb demos from work and burning them to a CD because the 56k connection at home would always get interrupted by the phone ringing. He had an amazing t1 connection that blew me away.

I needed to download the WD EZDRIVE tool to get this hard drive to format (8GB or something massive at the time) and I told my boss 'It'll be a half hour or so, I need to download this thing..." Boss: "We have a T1 line it won't take that long" Me: "o rly" Boss: "See? Click" Me:

So when I kicked off the World of Warcraft beta (like, the beta beta, 48GB in 2004) thinking it would take the better part of the weekend, it was finished by the time I got back from the cafeteria.

I remember the days of napster/scour and downloading to my hearts content at school to a slave hard drive in a computer in the lab and then taking the slave drive out and taking it home. Sneaker.net was the best.

Growing up we had a separate phone line for our 56k + fax machine, rarely got kicked offline due to calls/faxes, so it was nice. Cable internet got to our town in 1999 and it was easy to market it to my father, the loving phone bill was insane so I just appealed to his frugality and he jumped on the chance to save a hundred bucks (or more) a month. I never downloaded or did weird poo poo at schools until I got to college in '03, Catholic high school was a bit locked down, and since we had cable at home it wasn't an issue.

I don’t know how they ran a business with that kind of bandwidth. My IP soft phone was straight useless the entire time I was there. If Europe laughs at UK internet, the world laughs at Australian internet.

One of their techs earnestly tried to push an intermittent fault on their gear onto us by asking if we'd maybe had a power outage at the site in question. A power outage lasting all of may ten seconds. On UPS-protected equipment directly facing their gear. We'd notice something like that.

LOL, CenturyLink is now trying to pimp their fiber business offerings in Spokane again, a big mailer with huge "GIGABIT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR BUILDING NOW!" announcement, and on the front just above the mailing address was "may not be available in your area". (suprise - it isn't) I suspect this is because the city just floated a muni fiber working group to actually, y'know, improve speed and access. (Main choices are CenturyLink (shite) and Comcast (shite w/ shite customer service).)

There's a place in my city that isn't AT&T or Comcast that is selling fiber and I'm extremely interested, but I'm not in their area. Fine. Last week, I got one of their flyers hung on my front door and I called, kinda excited, but no, still not available in my neighborhood. Wtf

And the database borked itself this morning - rear end in a top hat developer was fired a few weeks ago which on the one hand I approve of, but on the other it means the rest of the developers are trying to push that pile of poo poo on us to fix, which.....no.
