It's nice to see that vendor support is the same for any size company.

One of the programs I admin had to renew licensing for the dev environment. I emailed tye vendor got the new license and applied it. Everything worked except for one module. It was throwing a licensing error.

I emailed back saying that the license was missing for the module and asked for an updated license file. I was told that wasn't the problem and I had to go through support.

A week passes and they can't find any issues from my emails so I webex the support tech onto the dev server. He looks around for two minutes and says " you are missing the license for that module, get licensing to generate you a new one. "

For a time I was on a first-name basis with some of the techs at a vendor I work with. We got to be friendly enough that a couple of them asked me for recommendations when they were ready to go to better companies, and I was happy to help out. Unfortunately their replacements were not as skilled at technical stuff or communications,

I got sent to an out of town job at the last minute (I was already gonna be driving to another job in the area anyway) and I was joking when I got back about how people will let you in anywhere if you walk in with a clipboard and a lanyard ask them where the network rack is, without asking for any proof that you're actually supposed to be there.

Turns out, I actually really wasn't supposed to be there, it was a government site where apparently we're only supposed to send techs with specific background check / security clearance certifications which I don't have yet. Whoops!

I think a couple other goons use Manage Engine Desktop Central, but have any of you tried to migrate the server it's installed on?

I tried this weekend, following the steps as laid out on their website exactly, and it very much did not work. I'm thinking of trying to just modify the VM it's on rather than moving it, but we have to move it to a newer AD domain which would entail the FQDN changing and seems like we would need to do some of the migratory work anyway...

While gearing up for an unrelated project, we discovered that we don't actually own a large number of business-critical phone numbers. This is not a priority, of course.
I have the opposite situation, a ... major US corporation used to have an R&D lab on our campus. They were whiny about our gigabit connection being not fast enough, so they did the sensible thing and instead of talking to our network operations people, decided to have AT&T run their own T3 line. 7 or 8 years ago, they left in a huff over, among other things, the university legal department demanding that they follow federal law regarding how many hours students on F1 visas can work (not 100% their fault, when someone from China who is used to corporate culture over there comes here as a grad student, good luck convincing them that they're only allowed to work 20 hours a week.)

Out of curiosity, I unplugged the T3 power supply from the wall. Sure enough, an AT&T tech was out there the next morning to plug it back in. I don't know what it costs to have it there, but apparently nobody has ever noticed that they're still paying for it.

They were complaining about the gigabit link and got a 45 Mbps link instead? Or was it they were complaining about not having *enough* bandwidth on a shared gigabit link, and a dedicated T3 was enough?

Probably was run by someone who last knew about internet speeds when T1 was the fastest, and T3 must be two better than the fastest.

I've told this story before, but our old change manager was really out of touch with tech, in that she hadn't done non-management since about 2001. In one of our DR meetings we mentioned that we were running a new WLAN connection to the site, and she asked if the new site was capable of handling "T1 bandwidth". When we explained 10g fibre I thought her head was going to explode.

Yeah. I went to university when 2Mb was top of the line domestic, we could hit 32Mb in dorms over SSH or HTTPS. Four of us rented a torrent box in Germany and downloaded 1TB per month, in 2005.

Growing up we had a separate phone line for our 56k + fax machine, rarely got kicked offline due to calls/faxes, so it was nice. Cable internet got to our town in 1999 and it was easy to market it to my father, the loving phone bill was insane so I just appealed to his frugality and he jumped on the chance to save a hundred bucks (or more) a month.

I never downloaded or did weird poo poo at schools until I got to college in '03, Catholic high school was a bit locked down, and since we had cable at home it wasn't an issue.

LOL, CenturyLink is now trying to pimp their fiber business offerings in Spokane again, a big mailer with huge "GIGABIT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR BUILDING NOW!" announcement, and on the front just above the mailing address was "may not be available in your area". (suprise - it isn't)

I suspect this is because the city just floated a muni fiber working group to actually, y'know, improve speed and access. (Main choices are CenturyLink (shite) and Comcast (shite w/ shite customer service).)

We have a homegrown fiber ISP here in Rochester, Greenlight Networks, that grows their network based on real demand rather than speculation. So they actually rely on neighborhoods to get together and advertise for them. The word of mouth advertising is very effective, as it becomes a first-person testimonial rather than a Spectrum or Frontier billboard essentially telling you that you're stuck with them. When a given area gets enough Greenlight sign-ups, they build it out. That way they cover the costs of getting the infrastructure in place as well as ensuring profitability. Could be the doorhanger you got was something similar.

I get 100 down/20 up for $50/month, and I pay an extra $10 for a public IP (most folks are behind NAT)

While this is of course utter and complete bullshit, can you at least tell "engineering" something like "listen here fuckos, here's your VM, and I've got it backed up regularly. The sum total of support requests you can make to me regarding this VM is A) can you reboot it or B) can you restore a backup from a specific date. I will summarily ignore any and all other requests pertaining to it because as I'm sure you can understand I have no knowledge of how it works and will not be responsible for any issues it has".

I mean that assumes you have management backing you on that, which considering the request was approved may not be the case, but yeah it's not worth being loving responsible for other people's crap on top of them shoving their crap on your infrastructure in the first place.

Currently dealing with a very similar situation - rear end in a top hat developer started up a MongoDB instance on his desktop machine because and I quote "it has an SSD and is faster than the server", which while possibly true (currently their VM host server only has spinning disks) doesn't mean you loving set up production infrastructure on your desktop, it means we need to get flash storage if that's the requirement. And the database borked itself this morning - rear end in a top hat developer was fired a few weeks ago which on the one hand I approve of, but on the other it means the rest of the developers are trying to push that pile of poo poo on us to fix, which.....no. :fuckoff:
