If you're on the daily drawing thread you've seen these already, but I'm getting out the paints again to work on some ideas I've been doodling. Maybe with the intention of getting them out into the wild somehow

Trying out working on wood instead of canvas or my usual illustration board. The last two pieces were experiments with clear gesso in hope that the wood grain would show and be an interesting part of the piece itself; but between the light grain basswood and clear gesso not being completely clear, it gets washed out. There are other things I could try, but I may just stick with white gesso since it makes the whole working experience a bit easier.

Getting a nice solid background is still my boogeyman, but paint markers have been a blessing for the line work (even if it feels like cheating)

Give it to me straight...
My first attempt at a wood print on paper. Carved into thin MDF and then ink is rolled over the top of the carved MDF sheet, placed over the top of a piece of paper, and put through a rolling press. The building in the foreground has writing on it, but it hasn't come out that well in the print. You can kind of see it, but not very well. I am most happy with the thousands of dots I had put in to give it texture. I hand hammered every single one in using a small tool usually used for working with clay and sculptures. Process took about two days to do as I am currently dealing with cancer and my hands and arms are constantly sore and tired.

For a first effort it kind of blows my mind how well it turned out, and encourages me that I can be good in the field of art and my studies, and that I shouldn't be so worried about everything, and instead just enjoy my process and do it. I took a gamble of how the dots might turn out and it paid off really well for me. I often reach for the high rung and go super-detailed and complex in my designs, which can lead to me feeling overwhelmed and frustrated, but this encourages me as it does show that hard work and effort has real rewards. I look forward to doing so many more like this, as I really love print making.

HNNNNNGG!!
I ordered some Speedball fluorescent neon inks and a pewter to add to my mostly Schmincke linocut ink collection, as well as three additional Pfeil cutters to pad out the kinds of marks I can make.

The bright oxidization teal colour is a mix of neon blue and yellow, plus white, and the darker green/yellow is infused with the aforementioned pewter. That layer has a metallic sheen to it that can only be appreciated in person as you change your viewpoint around it, kind of like you would those old holograms from the '80s. This is my first print that I experimented with blending between two colours on nearly every layer to give them all a sort of subtle gradient, although in this photo the gradient is too subtle for the teal and white layers, where the gradients go from green-ish teal to blue-ish teal, and off-white to a slightly more yellow off-white.

This turned out a 100% success rate for an edition of 10 at 7.5x7.5cm each, on BFK Rives.

How metallic is the pewter? I've tried using the speedball gold but I couldn't get it to sparkle on the paper.

Yep, it certainly is. Taken from the bus stop on the horseshoe bridge :)

I have another one coming along of the "Footsteps in time" statues from St Martin's Square. Had to photoshop out the crap background of the building behind them, and am now working to have a kind of history walk with each statue being mirrored almost by part of a building from their own era. Going to get onto that this weekend. Hope I am not as tired for that as I have been over the last few days, but I'll give it my best go.

Hi my name is Jizz Denouement. More than a decade ago I was pretty decent at oil paints, latex-based wood paints, and ceramics. I've dived back into painting after this long gap with acrylics because my significant other had a decent foundation of tools.

I am freaking terrible. Like, I can't even apply the paint from tube to palette to brush to canvas properly. Are there some good online resources or youtube series that provide a good introduction to painting with acrylics?

See if you can find this book somewhere: Learn To Paint Acrylics with 50 Small Paintings and practice on some acrylic painting pads instead of canvas. Most of the paintings in the book are pretty neat, and they break down the techniques in a step-by-step picture style, so you can follow along or use the same techniques to do something else.

I don't know any good acrylics courses on YouTube, since most of the people I follow do oils or watercolors. I'd take some time to just watch a few "Beginner Mistakes With Acrylics" to get an idea of what not to do. The book I recommended helped me tremendously get over my fear of making a mistake and to just start painting, and it will give you enough foundation where you'll be able to YouTube specific techniques or issues you're having.

Once you get the basics down, I actually found a lot of useful information and techniques from watching Forger's Masterclass.

It would also help to know what exactly you're trying to paint. There are millions of videos of how to do abstract paintings, which is going to be very different than if you're painting landscapes, portraits, or still lifes, etc.

Anyone have a recommendation for stores to get acrylic paints? I'm looking at some of the heavy body acrylics (Liquitex and Golden) since I'm tired of applying 4 coats of everything and they are obviously more expensive. I can always wait for Michaels to have a coupon here or there, but I'd rather not buy one tube at a time due to coupon or run out of something due to a larger canvas and have to pay an arm and a leg to finish a piece.

Paying up to 15 dollars for 2oz is gonna my bank account fast. :(

Jerry's Artarama and Dick Blick are my gotos for online art supplies, and their paints (liquitex, at least) are usually a few bucks off of store price. And price depends on the color, so you can cheap out on pigment. But don't think you'll be one-coat-and-done, you'll still need a few for solid coats.

Have you been using any matte mediums or pastes or anything for any of the coats? Liquitex's Matte Medium or Ultra Matte help me out, and the glazing medium is good if you want it to be brighter and have a light shine.

Cool! Since you're still growing as an artist, I recommend trying a few different mediums. Your paintings emphasize flat colors, and you could get some really interesting things by experimenting with using a new medium with some of them. Trying a new medium every month won't break the bank, and you'll certainly learn a lot from experimentation.

My local art supply shop has a shelf of all of those Liquitex mediums and a few other brands offerings, and they have actual swatches of each one so you can see how it looks when it's dry and how the colors work, which is what made me start trying different ones.

(I love experimenting with textures.)

All of the hanging paintings are within the last two months. Most of the prints are about a year old, though the square one is more like four.
