I think he can make his style work for him but he took an insane amount of head shots for pretth much the whole fight. Is getting constantly punched in the face integral to what he does? I'd imagine that improving his head movent or actually effectively blocking would go a long way, even if he keeps doing risky poo poo. There's risky poo poo, and there's bad defense, and he uh kinda does both. Bad combination.

i read that he developed his style because his vision is not only terrible, but he's near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other. he had the vision problem corrected with PRK before filming the ultimate fighter (and has, coincidentally, lost both his fights since).

Most fighters barely eat that many in a 5 round fight.

Insanely awesome fight. That left hand from Dustin was a rocket. Gaethje should take a dude down once in awhile.

Awesome fight, Dusin’s Leg kick defence was still godawful but those eye pokes gave him a lot of recovery time that he needed. Gaethje owns.

pretty sure gaethje said some insane poo poo before this fight or the eddie one about how one of them is going to die in the ring that night, and that's exactly how he wants to go. and when you see the 142 significant strikes to the head landed, you realize that motherfucker is serious about it

They're not going to let Dustin Poirier fight Khabib.

I remember Scott Smith's trainer was threatening to leave him if he didn't start trying to defend himself better back in '72 or so. I wonder if Gaethje's trainers feel the same.

Maybe an outside chance if Conor keeps being dumb as poo poo and Tony doesn't heal up and Khabib demands a title defence before Ramadan, or even after, if both those things keep happening, but even then, I think they'd give it to Eddie. It sucks, but welcome to the Lightweight divison, where all the best, most exciting fighters exist, but they're never allowed to fight for the title because [unintelligible irish about 'diddy bread']

Poirier is probably going to get a long medical suspension even in a win for that one. I'm not sure what Arizona's practices are, but lots of commissions give long breaks for especially hard fights.

i mean, gaethje has a great chin, but i would wager that a great many of shots that slammed powerfully into his forearms were tallied as significant. when he's covering up, his head defense is quite good. it's why body shots pay such dividends against him (both because they tire him, and because he bends his high guard into them at the waist rather than drop his forearms)
