SocialBlade seems to be broken at the moment; it hasn't updated Channel Awesome's subscriber loss in many hours. If you switch to the live view, you can see that it's lost over 800 today, but they're displaying it as 291 elsewhere. It's been just about two weeks since they started hemorrhaging subscribers, and at the current rate, at the end of the day, they'll have had a full two weeks of losing over a thousand subscribers each day.

A new Jon Bois thing where he and someone else get all nerdy about sports stats called "Dorktown" that's "Like Chart Party but both better and worse". Here they look at Shaq and see what would have happened if he'd missed all 11,252 of his free throws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioDskqAHOrI

I dunno how to feel about the new Jon Bois segment. I think I like Jon the most when it's just him, whenever someone who isn't Jon is talking my interest just drops to zero. Just have Jon commentate everything solo in his slightly bored, semi-monotone voice, and I'll watch it. Hell, he doesn't even have to do the charts, I'd listen to him ramble about things to himself in a podcast forever.

Mokinokaro posted:Apparently the trademark is owned by 4 people (Mike and Greg Michaud, Rob and Doug Walker) so Michaud can't do anything solo with it either. A fifth owner was supposed to be brought on this week, likely Doug's father who has been more hands on with Doug's work since his wife passed away a few years back. Not as such, no: the trademark belongs to Channel Awesome, Inc. The majority owner in a closely-held corporation is usually functionally the sole owner, unless they’re colossal idiots. Mike Michaud is the majority owner. So he could recast the character over Doug’s objections, even if Doug remained a minority owner in the company, and pay Doug nothing. More likely, the corporation dissolves, with everyone getting a little piece of whatever assets they have left after their debts are paid. Whoever made the personal guarantee on the lease for the warehouse is going to get soaked for a month or two of rent. The trademarks don’t get renewed.

I do have to wonder what's gonna happen next for CA. If Doug leaves then what are they gonna even do? Just stop uploading videos? If he does leave I can't imagine they would say nothing but then, I can't imagine anything they would say wouldn't just do more damage. Considering how innocuous this all started, with some people bitching about it on twitter, to now, where it's very likely the whole site is shutting down, it's just... drat, Mike has no idea how to run a business. He did nothing but pour fuel on the fire, and anything he could have done to fix things he deliberately sabotaged to make things worse. Any other business that size would have been able to weather the storm fine, but Mike somehow made this unworkable.

Not gonna lie, I kinda want to see the ending where Michaud milks those last remaining dollars from the NC trademark by casting himself as the new Critic. Of course, that won't happen, because he'll just hold an open casting call for someone else to be the new NC and not get paid for it!
