How much do you tip the person who rings up your total at the grocery store? I usually tip around 10-15% of my total bill, even if it's just something small like a trip for milk and eggs. I do use a system though that includes things such as if it's a holiday or they're exceptionally speedy at bagging my groceries - and how the place the groceries in the bag (ie, eggs on bottom = reduction in tip, bread in own bag = big money.) When I went on a cruise ship to Nassau they acted as if I were crazy for tipping them, so I figured it may just be an American thing.

This is good advice. Always head to the deli right away and get some good meat. I hand that poo poo out like candy. Deli guy gets a slice, any stocker gets a slice, cashiers, baggers, hell I'll ambush the manager if I get a chance and let him have some. Just slip that poo poo into their palms like a magician doing a coin trick.

After doing this a few times they start to remember you. I always get offered the best carts, no wonky wheels or anything. Last time I went shopping a stocker actually went back behind the milk fridge to make sure I got the coldest jug with the latest expiration date. There was a lady offering samples of Jimmy Dean chicken sausages and she just kept letting me take them while she cooked up some more, which of course I got first pick of.

It's good to be king.

Being a cashier in any kind of a busy establishment combines the low pay of, well, a cashier with the stress and lovely rude people of any lowly customer service job and wrist strain of a professional retard masturbator. You are better off blasting poo poo off poo poo factory floors than being a cashier.

I don't tip cashiers poo poo nor the bagger since I usually bag my own. Down here they're way too lazy to do a good job of it or even get to you in a reasonable amount of time.

I however tip generously to waiter/waitresses since they don't make minimum wage and they're paycheck is based largely on performance, which I respect.

I either get my groceries delivered or our nanny does it for us. Any other situation, I will drive an extra 20 miles to make sure I go to a store with self checkout.

If society had determined that cashiers should be tipped, there would be a spot on the receipt to write one down, and there isn't. I have done nothing wrong and have not violated any unwritten, implicit social contracts by never tipping a cashier even once.

I've never heard of tipping a cashier. 32 years and have never seen it. Although tipping the person taking groceries out to the car is something, but not really a percentage, just like a buck or two.

There will always be an attendant though. It's mandatory. If I MUST do self-checkout, though I 90% of the time do not because it takes away cashier jobs, I make sure to tip the attendant.

I used to never tip cashiers but lately I’ve been super self aware about economic disparity so I’ve been tipping everyone I can by larger than normal amounts.

oh hey the tipping thread is back

i tip required amount as long as the person is not a complete giant rear end in a top hat who calls me a cocksucker, and tip more if I get good service.

i also tip workers for poo poo that is not technically tip-worthy if they gave me great service.

i have never tipped a cashier.

thanks for the thread.

It seems pretty cruel to tip cashiers. Even if you only tip them 15%, that's still pretty likely to make them fall over. You've gotta be really fast to get your feet back under you from that position, and cashiers aren't typically that fast on their feet.

Luckily, it's mostly a myth that cashiers can't get back up.
