BC. This data attracted a threat bigger than any seen in the history of any existing civilization. Leaving it to Legion Operations to deal with and hoping for brownie points would be the correct and smart play for most people. But we’re not most people. We’re TenFuckingSixths. Trusting those scrubs in LegOps to deal with something this big would be reckless and irresponsible.

2
D. We said we’d deal with the ferals. No point wasting time to avoid a job we’ll just have to do later.

Minor suggestion: Responding to these is easier and clearer if the lettering doesn’t restart on each new question.

Just so folks know, there will be Feral Nephilim at all the sites. There's several billion spread across Mishpacha, its just that they are the primary threat at the coastal valleys. Which does make it a good point to start the re-integration project, but not the sole point.

And I will rejigger the decision presentation, I've had some issues with counting votes so it can definately be improved.

Eh, I'd keep the lettering resetting, but keep the number incrementing.

Could also ask people to put in your little mini descriptions, but that'd be harder to enforce. i.e.

Decision 1: Secret Legion Data
A - Send the data. We don't have time to be decoding it or the resources to fight some mysterious enemy anyway, see if we can get the Legion on our side when it becomes an issue.

Decision 2: Locations to Start Scouting
C - All sorts of supplies just sitting there. If we can spare someone, also send a negotiator for B. Sweet talk some survey data while looting.

Don't really like G since we elected not to get the survey equipment

Clarification: Approval Voting

So approval voting is were you vote for a panel of options that you like. Forex, in the Location Scouting decision if you wanted to go with the original locations and no new scouting but didn't really mind which of the locations were used, you'd vote CDEF. All the votes would count equally and go towards a simple majority count. Now most of you probably already know this, but my brain was being a doof and I was misinterpreting the multivotes. Luckily I don't think it would have effected the outcome of anything major.

So, in short, I will be using approval voting (properly counted) starting with the current vote cycle. If you'd like to go back and change/add to your vote feel free, I wont be updating for a day or two. As it stands, the votes are:

Secret Legion Data
A: 9
B: 4
C: 1

Locations to Start Scouting
A: 1
B: 2
C: 6
D: 2
E: 2
F: 4
G: 4

Tribunal Bunker, Bastion

The Tribunes are a Legion Auxila mercenary company that are the closest thing to organized law enforcement on Mishpacha. Paid for by the larger concerns, their patrols were available to aid smaller communities as well. As long as you could cover their service fees.

Its an open secret that most of the Legion assigned to the Tribunes were fresh recruits that needed additional experience, or older servicemembers looking to reach their retirement in a not-so-hot zone. First Centurian Anthony was obviously in the second group, but his extensive scarring said he earned his desk. He looks honestly surprised when his Second scans the data enclosure Granny gave him and reveals it to be untampered with. He rises and gives you a twisted smile and a handshake that would have crushed your hand if it wasn’t constructed of spacecraft-grade alloys.
“You’re a rare breed Commander TenSixths, the Auxila thanks you for returning our sister-in-arms and... property to us. Now unfortunately I don’t really have authorization to disburse credits to non-Tribunes, but I like to reinforce good behaviour. I do however have authorization to supplement our brothers and sisters from our Armory, and your Second here is Auxila. So how about she goes and picks herself out something nice?”

Granny doesn’t have to be told twice, and she’s practically skipping down to the Armory. First Centurian Anthony puts a friendly arm around your shoulders, practically engulfing you in his bulk.
*low voice*“I also wouldn’t be surprised if certain interested parties contact you in the future, discreet independants can be useful.”

He steps back and continues in a normal volume.
“And the grapevine tells me that you plan on sticking around long-term. If that’s the case, the Tribunes would be happy to provide their services to you while you’re starting up. My Third will give you the comm codes.”

*****
’Downtown’ Bastion

After the arctic temperatures of the Legion bunker, even the high-altitude coolness of Bastion’s streets causes your body to steam. High in the central mountains of Star, the city-ruin was the center of the so-called Reclaimed Zone. The altitude and cooler temperatures made the jungle more manageable, and only specialized flying or climbing Nephilim geneotypes could bypass the natural shield walls. The relative safety made it the most highly populated area on the planet, but it was still small enough to project a frontier air. It was also far more mixed than most Haven settlements, hatreds old and new bowing in the face of the planet’s dangers.

Speaking of hatreds, you hear Cody and Jadzi before you see them. Perhaps having them meet you at the outdoor eatery wasn’t the best idea, at least not without Granny or Kruze as a buffer. They’re smart enough to not be yelling in public, but your audio processor easily picks up their not-whispers.
“What did you expect?! Kordon Monastery was a holy site for the Task Clan! Offering visitor passes at a discount was possibly the worst thing you could do, you credit-obsessed… spreadsheet jockey!
“Well excuuuse me, it was empty when we found it. What, were the Tasks too busy eating babies to return after the War? We came across half the sector to it, they couldn’t even go halfway across the system?”

The argument goes downhill from there, as it always does. I mean, the fight that occurred when Granny and Kruze were interviewed did major damage to The Jenni and landed both of them in a flesh rejuvenator, but that was that. They both knew where they stood with each other, and interacted on a professional basis. And Jadzi was too scared of Kruze to start anything, so she treated the Nephilim medic as a dangerous beast to be avoided when necessary. Probably not the best, but at least it was quiet.

Cody and Jadzi however, were evenly matched physically and mentally. And we had all been cooped up in the ship for too long, so its understandable that tempers are thin. But its still worrisome.
“...and that’s what you can do with that, you trumped up tunnel ra- Hello Captain, how was your meeting?”

Your presence is noted, Cody’s transition to smiling helpfulness is smooth and practiced. Jadzi’s is more strained, anger still clouding her face. You regard them both, and decide personnel issues can wait. For now.
“Useful. Hydra is busy picking out a new toy, I would recommend being very excited when she shows it to you later. How was your visit to to Resupply Collective?”
“It started out a… bit rocky, but they calmed down after I showed them my Electro-Gravity field modulation calculationsya. Couldn’t get everything, but they gave us what they had of the Waistra region. Good news, Cody’s broker isn’t a complete bust, the city is still there!”

She activates her tablet and starts flipping through survey data and visual records. A low mesa poking up out of thick jungle, a ruined city of spires taking up most of it.

She stops at one image, fuzzy with magnification. But still, an object can be made out floating above a high spire, a large dust cloud at the spire’s base. Jadzi frowns.
“Ya, the bad news is that someone might already be there. You’d have to run it past Kruze to be sure, but we’re pretty sure that’s a bio-tech comms balloon. Not long range, but it would let you set up a local network. Not a very big one, so ho- go tell her to go go gonow gogonow GONOWGONOW NOWNOWNOWNOW!

Before anyone can react to Jadzi’s outburst, she jumps out of her chair and knocks you to the ground. As you attempt to push her off the rest of the patrons begin to panic, and there’s a flash of light and a low whump. Suddenly your arms begin to spasm, unresponsive to my commands. Over Jadzi’s shoulder you see four Corporates and a Legion approach with sleek rifles, firing blue bolts at us. Bolts that cause your body to spasm slightly whenever they pass overhead.

Disruptors! Useful for knocking out organics, extraordinarily effective on robotics. This is not an attack, its a kidnapping in force!

=====
(trying a new voting layout, let me know if it sucks)
Decision 1: Granny’s New Toy
Granny currently uses an old but well-maintained Heraclean Heavy Assault Rifle, a semi-automatic rifle with good damage and decent armor penetration that’s useful for single targets or small groups. Her armor is a tactical suit (decent armor) with a thermal regulator (negates her penalties from warm environments). Should she get:
A: Pimp My Rifle
Add a targeting laser and tactical computer to her current rifle, making it much more accurate.
B: A Handy Sidearm
A Mk 2 Micro Missile Launcher. Heavy pistol, good for close quarters
C: Boom!
A Fulminatus Grenade Launcher. Good for crowds, can use different round types
D: More Boom!
A Thaumas Mk 4 mortar. Long-range crowd control, can damage ships.
E: Button Up
Upgrade Granny's armor with a full Environmental Adaption System, making her able to operate in vacuum and other hostile environments.

Decisions 2: Under Fire
We’re under attack! What do we do?
F: Retreat!
We’re not panicking, this is totally a tactical withdrawal
G: Hold the Line!
Take a defensive position until reinforcements can arrive
H: Push Back!
Let’s show these kidnappers who’s boss

Decision 3: Posthuman Resources
The Cody/Jadzi situation will have to be dealt with a some point.
I: Stop Being Idiots!
Yell at them until they at least pretend to be able to work together.
J: My Door is Always Open
Take a sympathetic approach to help them work through their issues.
K: Whatever
Ignore them, they'll work it out. Hopefully without killing each other.

Spare Time Points
So in Fragged Empire, it is acknowledged that you’ll generally be able to buy/build/perform something you need to have or have done. The limiting resource is time. So you have a number of Spare Time Points that you can use in downtime to do things in the background. Unlike Influence you do spend STP, but it slowly recharges and you can also gain them through minor looting. We currently have 15/16 STP, Jadzi used one to convince the Kaltorans to give us some of their survey data.

Fairly soon, provided we survive this attack, the game mode will open up a bit as we get into the meat of colony building. I will be putting up minor tasks that use STP up for votes, and will also be taking suggestions on possible uses.

Extending Granny’s range with a scope or mortar sounds good. Mortar might be handier in case we need to deal with any small ships.

Granny and Kruze shouldn’t be far off and the disruptors sound nasty. Better to stay in cover.

To dissuade violence towards oneself, as an individual or a nation, one must make it clear that aggression will be met with annihilation, while mutually beneficial trade is welcomed and preferred. Also: something that has Intel is still needed.

As far as we can tell, comms are still open.

It was a walk of 10ish minutes from the bunker to here. Granny would run, but Legion are slow generally so she'd only but a bit quicker. Kruze is overseeing the resupply of the ship, which is farther and she's not a pilot.

There are tables, buildings, and random architectural bits in the area. All three options are supported by the environment, its mainly a question of the strengths and weaknesses of you, Cody, and Jadzi.

Remember, Legion are a race, so being shot at by individual Legion hired out by someone else, or who went rogue, is not only common but basically a fact of life for any Auxilia running around, much less Exsilia.

So long as you remember to send money home nobody really cares, you're being paid to shoot people and doing your job. Well, the Legion high command cares but who cares what they think.

’Downtown’ Bastion: The Shootout at the Golden Corral

Cody hits the ground shortly after us, upending out table and cursing. The material of her suit coat ripples, as the Synth Steel fibers realign into a rigid armor form. She slaps at her wrist, the interface built into her bracelet sparking and smoking.
“FUCKSHIT! They’ve fritzed my controller! Larry, defense mode!”

Her hover-drone assistant attempts to vocalize, but produces only mangled electronica. It unfurls several emitter spike and actives a broad cover shield, and jerkily settles in position between Cody and the incoming fire. Several shots hit the shield and it holds up better than the table beneath it. Above you, you see Jadzi’s eyes refocus. Confusion flashes across her face, but she recovers quickly. Reaching into one of her many pockets, she rolls off of you and tosses a small object towards your attackers in one motion. Dense smoke billows forth, blocking their view of your position. Her four ears twitch and shift independently, tracking sounds only she can hear.
“Grenades! Why did you bring grenades to a lunch meeting?!
“No, why didn’t you! I bet you don’t even have a gun!
“Not the time ladies, we are leaving. Hydra, Kruze, Tribunes: Two-Seven-Four Actual is under fire. Extracting to Fire Base Bastion, requesting support enroute. Do we have an exit?”

Jadzi doesn’t reply, she just shouts something in Kaltoran while emptying her SMG’s clip into the smoke cloud. From behind her comes a response, the same word from the Kaltoran cook. He’s taken cover behind a support pillar, motioning you into the kitchen while firing his pistol.
Jadzi pauses for a moment, listening. The disruptor fire slackens slightly, and she smacks your shoulder.
“Go! Low and fast!”

The three of you scramble through the chairs and tables into the server’s entrance of the kitchen. The cook points to the back door while reloading, telling Jadzi something else. They touch hands back-to-back, and then he goes back to providing cover fire. Jadzi hustles you out the back, but turns left when your inner map says to turn right.
“Jadzi, this isn’t the w-”
“Market’s this way, better way!”

The decision is made for you as two of the Corporate kidnappers appear down the right-hand alley, attempting to flank you. The three of you run left, not slowing to provide cover fire. Behind you you hear an electronic squeal and small explosion as Larry pays the ultimate price to cover your escape.

Jadzi leads you and Cody through several twists-and turns, disruptor fire never far behind. Suddenly you turn a corner and are engulfed in a Kaltoran Market. Kaltoran Markets spring up anywhere more than two Kaltoran families meet: stations, cities, ship holds. This one takes up several small alleys, full of ramshackle stalls and interested buyers. Jadzi pulls you through the crowd, repeating the Kaltoran word and has it repeated back to her by many of the market-goers.
“Jadzi, why the hell are you just repeating ‘herder’ over and over?”
“Take too long to explain. We need to keep moving. They’ll cover us, but I don’t want to make it too dangerous for them.”

The ‘they’ Jadzi refers to seems to be most of the Market. You had always thought that the stories about every single Kaltoran being armed at all times was ribbing, either good- or bad-natured depending on the source. But as you move through the crowd and see small children and the elderly produce weapons as well, perhaps the stories aren’t complete falsehoods.

You can hear a firefight start up behind you, Kaltoran and Legion and Corporate shouts intermingling. A few of the market-goers escort you, happily dropping you off with Granny and a squad of Tribunes before turning back to the market.

All in all, it could have gone worse. Not much weirder, but much much worse.

*****
Tribunal Bunker, Triage

The Legion corpsman tends to Jadzi and Cody quickly and efficiently. Luckily, aside from the electrical burns on Cody’s wrist, he was mainly patching up minor scrapes and shrapnel-cuts. The arctic climate in the bunker was probably causing them more discomfort honestly. You would have to give yourself a bit of maintenance to make sure the disruptors hadn’t done permanent damage, but it could wait. The medic pronounces them fit for duty before saluting and leaving. You regard your two crew members for a moment, displaying pleasing colors on your faceplate.
“You two did well today. Amazing what co-operation can accomplish, yes?”

The near-identical eye-roll you receive is hilarious, but you’re smart enough to not laugh at them. A gentle hand and a few well-timed talks should hopefully get them out of the ‘open hostility’ phase.
“Anyways. If I may ask Jadzi, what was that all about?”
*shrugs*“Its a… mutual defense thing? Like, in the dome-cities, at any given moment you could get attacked by Dark Tribes, tunnel beasts, or Neph seamonsters. So helping out when someone is like ‘Holy poo poo I’m hosed!’ is pretty ingrained. ‘Cause tomorrow it might be you getting hosed. Porthic means ‘animal herder’ in old Kaltoran, there’s some old rhyme about a herder protecting their flock. Which is why its the trigger-word I guess.”

She looks at you speculatively, like she’s trying to gauge you mind.
“So….. there is generally a reward-type thing involved beyond the expected reciprocity. Just giving them credits or something openly would be insulting, you give them something useful because they’re totally an awesome person.”
“All very fascinating, but you’re forgetting the most important question: who’s paying for my new drone controller?”

*****
Tribunal Bunker, Brig
“There was nothing on the body aside from their weapon and armor. And the tattoos I suppose.”

Hydra helpfully projects the autopsy holos from her gauntlet. A Corporate man lays on the slab, multiple gunshot wounds the obvious cause of death. The aforementioned tattoos are extensive, black strands winding around all four limbs and meeting at an odd symbol above the man’s heart:

You zoom the holo, and see that the limb tattoos have additional detail. They aren’t just solid lines, they are strings of four letters in repeating patterns: ACTG.
“He’s a Black Key cultist. They preach about using Human technology to ascend to a higher plane of existence, using the Human genome to unlock that power. They’re fairly popular with the downtrodden, even operate medical clinics on poorer stations. But my boy Marcus had an encounter with one of their ‘rediscovery teams’ last year. Seems they can get nasty if they’re on the trail of a rare bit of Human code or tech.”

The door chimes, and two troopers escort the Legion that attacked you into the room. He’s dressed in the closest thing the Legion have to civilian clothes, his shirt stretched over a flesh rejuvenator on his arm. He stands at parade rest, the shackles clanking.
“Maximillian Crassus, Exsilia trooper. Was just give The Choice and has agreed, so he’ll be shipped back for reintegration with Auxilia forces. Suddenly a patriot boy?”
“No ma’am. The First Centurion seems to think that I’ve given him a bit of a black eye, so they were going to send me up to court-martial instead of cutting me loose. Having the Auxilia taking a chunk of my pay is better than breaking rocks somewhere.”
“You poor benighted soul. Tell me about your compatriots.”
shrugs”Not much to tell, I didn’t meet them until this morning. The mission was a standard one-and-done, came through my broker. Vincent Grayson, he works out of a little waystation in Sector 5 of the Monopoly Belt. He pinged me with the details, they looked fairly simple and I was in the area. ‘My compatriots’ were a bit twitchy, but I’m used to working with amateurs. You were the primary target, although if we were able to grab any of your crew that would be a bonus. There was a groundcar for exfiltration, that’s what the other three used to escape when things went sideways. I wasn’t given the final destination, I was to be dropped off enroute. But the transport was a wheeled variant, so it couldn’t have gotten outside the Reclaimed Zone.”
“Hmmm, thank you for the… debrief. Anything else to add?”
“Yes ma’am. My reorientation should only take a month or two, so please keep me in mind for any future military endeavours.”

*****
The Jenni, Captain’s Quarters

There's nothing like sitting down with a heap of data to analyse after a rough day. The Kaltoran survey data is arrayed across your desk, slowly compiling into a combined holo. Not nearly as much detail as you’d like, but the the Mishpachan atmosphere is notorious for its sensor-fouling properties. And try as you might, you were unable to find anyone with records or genetic memories of Waistra. Unfortunately it is quite possible that no-one that lived there survived the War.

With a ding, the data finishes compiling. Terrain for several kilometers around the Waistra plateau are displayed, with a few anomalies helpfully highlighted:

Now for siting a base camp. Starting on Waistra Plateau would save time and material transfer, but there was the possibility that an unknown someone had set up shop there. Decisions, decisions.

=====
Luckily it is generally easier to retreat from combat, even when the odds are against you. So we get out with only minor damage. Granny will be getting practice in with her shiny new Thaumas Mk 4 mortar, and we will be taking a Nice Boss approach with Cody and Jadzi.

Decision 1: A Kindness Repaid
The Kaltorans of Bastion did us a solid, how do we repay them?
A: Nothing
Its not like you asked them for help, if Jadzi cares she can arrange something
B: A Fancy Schematic
The Palantor have access to some of Humanity’s fun toys. While you can’t build it for them, give the Kaltorans the designs for a high-efficiency recycler.
C: Supplies
Oh no, you’ve totally ordered too many crates of non-refundable power cells and spare parts. Now who could use these? (Costs 1 Spare Time Point)

Decision 2: Whither Larry?
Who *does* pay for Larry II?
D: Cody
You require a certain amount of self-sufficiency from you subordinates.
E: We Do
Personal Assistant drones are a dime a dozen, don’t be stingy.
F: Introducing Curly
Replace her PA drone *and* get the poor girl an actual combat drone. (Costs 1 STP)

Decision 3: Base Camp
Where should we set up while we’re scouting the area?
G: NE Mountain
No jungle to speak of, clear sight-lines across the area
H: Plateau Edge
Waistra Plateau is several square kilometers, you should be able to find an out-of-the-way spot
I: Waistra Proper
To hell with squatters, find a nice open spot in the city center.
J: Other
Has another spot caught your eye?

Decision 4: Specialty Equipment
In addition to the boring standard surveying/exploring equipment, you also had some specialty equipment sourced and stored at Bastion High
K: Mobility Gear
Palantor antigrav bikes for you, Cody, and Jadzi. Electro-gravity cargo sled for Granny and Kruze.
L: Defensive Gear
Prefab security fencing and sentry guns.
M: Comms Net
High-powered transmitters and comms buoys to extend your range to orbit and beyond.

Spare Time Decisions
There will be some downtime as we travel to Waistra and get set up, so folks have work on their own things. Folks can do research, train, or build/buy equipment. This one is open to suggestions, so let me know what you'd like Captain and crew to spend their spare time on.

1. Offer them steadings once the colony is up and running. They get land, we get community minded colonists. Be up front about risks and give anyone who's not convinced supplies instead.

1. B Information is valuable reward, but costs us less to give away

2. F Gotta be prepared for combat at all times in the jungle...

3. HJ With J being the northwest mountain with a nearby ruin.

4. L All three are useful, but as was just shown, we're going to get attacked. Automated defenses make the first setup alot easier.

For 3, I propose J - the western jungle Mesa. It's located on top of a Mesa which we can clear of jungle, close to two different anomalies and Waistra proper while being far enough away from it that we shouldn't get in conflict with the squatters.
