There's no one I'd rather be than me.

A couple friends of mine just showed me Stines Gate last night. We got about three episodes in and MAN I wished the whole "Time Travel is real" aspect was ripped out. Because then this would be a great slice of life show/Japanese version of Crying of Lot 49 but with a wannabe Rick Sanchez.

Nah the slice of life makes you care but if it went to long it would get pretty grating.

It’s dub is also amazing.

Going somewhat in line with what Lamps said, though, I remember someone saying that anime twenty-thirty years ago was a lot more 'globalized', in that it had a more broad appeal in its content (sci-fi shows like Gundam or the like ). Nowadays, it feels like it's more insular, or rooted in Japanese culture to a point where you need knowledge of Japanese cultural norms to get a better context. In those cases, sticking to original dubbing and subtitles feels more appropriate.

This is just one example from years back, but they aren't totally unaware of how the last decade or so of industry trends are unappealing internationally.

Just left a seminar on overseas broadcasting where there was a breakdown of what overseas anime fans want. In particular, Shirobako was used as an example of what not to do.

Supposedly the scale of the story was too small. This makes me remember when I was in elementary school, I would often be called up by my teacher to do a math problem on the blackboard only to be introduced as an example of how to do it wrong.

Edit: Also, just my 2 cents on some of the talk earlier about Bob. Keep in mind, thanks to the unique, hosed up way capitalism works in America a lot of people who earn 100K-250K do consider themselves the working class and see themselves as struggling.

I mean, it depends where you live, too. In Boston's suburbs, $100K is more than enough to live on by a wide margin. In Boston itself, you're gonna have a real hard time affording rent and living expenses on that salary.

But yeah, if you're making a quarter million dollars a year, you're not struggling unless you have four kids.

I think that, instead of being a brutal look at the horrors of war, he tried to reframe the whole movie as "kids these days suck, back in MY day we got firebombed" and it rubbed a few people the wrong way.

I just want Bennett to get on with his Bubblegum Crisis retrospective because I want to see what he thinks of Tokyo 2040. I'd also love to see him do G Gundam just because it's the best Gundam series or something on Slayers. I know he did Slayers the Motion Picture but that's more of just a broad comedy-adventure in comparision to the series or OVAs.

"Hi Everybody!"
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt was an anime series, reputedly, started as a drunken bet to see how far they could push censorship and good taste South Park-style. Like right to just shy of breaking point. The original dialogue's pretty good, just for skirting rrrrrules by swearing in english (and parodying a lot of western properties).

The english dub is even more depraved because they didn't have to worry about said broadcast regulations.

Oh yeah, of course. But this dove-tails into another problem with America. Housing shortages in major urban areas. Either because no one wan't to build or rent to low income people or because the wealthier residents fight to keep people from building new housing in order to keep their property values up.

There is also the problem of an entire industry of real-estate resellers purposely massively inflating the price of houses to hte point where people who actually want to live in houses rather than use them as a store of investment cannot buy them.

I always find these sub vs. dub discussions interesting, because in my country (:finland:) such a debate doesn't really exist. Over here, dubbing is almost exclusively used on programming for young children while all other foreign stuff is subtitled, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Same, but opposite. Here (Germany) subbing is for Nerds and seen as rather exotic. Almost everything here is dubbed.

Which is also Japan's general stance. Even the big blockbuster films get these hilarious dubs into Japanese (though usually stuff like Marvel can be found subtitled with less showings at bigger theaters)
