It's a hell of a thing to tell a guy he's listening to good metal and then to link him to slaughter of the soul rather than red in the sky is ours

I've listened to At the Gtes and enjoyed them, same with older stuff like Heartwork by Carcass. I was just surprised how Towards the Twilight sounds considering its contemporaries were albums like Whoracle, The Minds I, and Gates of Ishtar's entire run.

I don't want to say Slaughter of the Soul is a bad album, but I just can't listen to it. It's not the music itself, but it's all the clones it spawned that saturated metal with the exact same sound. For whatever reason, I get sick of it about 30 seconds in.

You couldn't trip over your shoelaces in a pit without hitting 4000 copies of a promo for a band that sounds exactly like it.

Catching Saxon tonight in Berkeley. I'm going with my son who is my age when I last saw them live (during the Crusader tour), so this is pretty cool.

Is Diamond Head still considered metal?

Because some recent NWOBHM talk (see above!) reminded me of them; their original album Lightning to the Nations is being reissued by a label in Germany, the third pressing comes out this Friday with black, white, and translucent electric blue. The total count is about 1000. So if you have a turntable and you're interested, go for it. The 3-4k copies they've pressed counting this seem to be the only copies pressed since the early 80s.

I bought Lightning to the Nations on CD back in like...2000 because I was a Metallica fanboy, and now that was almost as long ago as the album was old then. Holy gently caress.

(yeah I post about vinyl a lot, my interests in metal and vinyl have basically been rekindled at the same time)

The only thing by Diamond Head I've heard is Lightning to the Nations and I don't know if I want to check out anything else because you can't improve on perfection.

That album is great throughout.

Funnily enough as much as I loved lightning to the Nations back when I first got it on CD, I've never checked out anything else. I've never even heard anything good about any of it except for their 2016 album...which really isn't the same band no matter what Brian Tatler wants to call it.

This is good stuff but it’s not totally hitting the Amon Amarth spot for me. Maybe it’s the production/guitar tone.

But new Kalmah. gently caress I’m digging it a lot the more I listen. It’s some mixture of Children of Bodom and Amon Amarth with a more straightforward serious approach. I guess that was always the Kalmah thing though.

Has anyone noticed that weird but cool buzzing instrument or whatever in some parts of the Kalmah album? Is it a synth? I can’t recall a specific song that uses it but it shows up now and then.

I've liked my fair share of bands that "tried to expand on the sound from Slaughter of the Soul" :jerkbag:, but the only band from that whole crop that I still give two shits about is Darkest Hour, and that's only because they always were really blatant about their Gothenburg MeloDeath worship. Hell, if I don't mis-remember they were the first Metalcore band who instead of trying to ape the record, they just flat out said "gently caress it, let's go to Studio Fredman, get the guitar dudes from At the Gates, Soilwork and The Crown to do the solos and let's get that Tomas Lindberg for a guest spot.

Funnily enough, I like the 2 records they did with Devin as engineer/producer a whole lot more.

This is closer to their hard rock side but Virgin Steele's "Blood and Gasoline" is one of the best written songs in recorded history -- so many little details, flairs of expert writing, that make it sound fresh every loving time I listen to it. And I tend to play it on a loop.
