Chris is not actively defrauding backers or enticing others to be complicit in a scam for purposes of padding one's pocket. You are all (mostly) intelligent folk and to think that a game dev from days-past has come to the light once again in final attempt to create the game he has envisioned would so publicly try to pull a 'fast-one' in front of 2 million+ individuals would not only be brazen, but downright idiotic in today's political and legal climate. Government agencies are out for blood, especially in this hosed-up administration because missteps can so easily lead to lack of funding. The judiciary face the same scrutiny and I would imagine that many would err on the side of caution and conservation instead of being so fast-and-loose with decisions.

OK - all of that said (and why I still need to make this disclaimer after all this time is beyond me, but I'm not affiliated with CIG in any other way than an overzealous backer): I see Chris and team in a similar light to Lucas and the production of SW Episodes 1 - 3. Lucas came back to "finish" his masterpiece because he said the technology final caught up to his vision, and I compare that to Roberts thinking that he can finally substantiate his vision into something tangible. There's no other explanation for his attitude, passion and antics except that he must really believe that his vision can be accomplished with current tech and resources, so much so that he turned the dial to 11 with over 400+ employees under his employ.

No disrespect Don, but you're no one to think you can hold his neck under your boot. I don't know if you're a backer or not, but whether you have skin-in-the-game is moot: Chris and team will continue to chug forward collectively. 60+ Open positions, half of which are art or back-office related, are not a good indicator of collective business success. And to over a counterpoint: neither is the current state of the game. No - my personal feeling is that the current code base, current iteration that is backer-facing and current attitude is one that is 2 steps behind what CIG is privately working. They have contracted resources assisting with the netcode and are likely working on a scalability model for AWS, none of which fall under the umbrella of "open development" because it could be proprietary and simply not ready for public consumption. Not everything CIG does needs to be broadcast, especially if it's not ready (which I know is par for the course in some aspects).

In any event, the "fleecing of backers" so claimed by many of you is not on CIG. There's not force - there's no gun-to-the-head - for someone to back the game. Anyone could just as easily sit-out and watch, but if someone wanted to partake in play it's been well established since the kickstarter that money spent is on development. Promises made at this time to deliver a certain type of gameplay that got enveloped in scope-creep probably should have been re-evaluated and/or conceded. But after the first moves into the direction of an expansion of scope, I think it became clear to many (certainly not all) where the vision was heading.

Counterpoint: Chris Roberts is a lying, inept hack and fraud who needed to defraud nearly $200 million because he couldn't convince publishers to bankroll the same vanity project that got him fired the last time he tried it, and has learned none of the lessons but rather repeated every mistake from that incident.

Do you seriously think even goons don't occasionally need a success story? With so many childhood heroes faceplanting as they get older and failing to recapture what made them great, at this point I'd take any win I can get, even a cocksucker like Chris. Which is why I also backed him early, although to a lesser extent than you did. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, I knew he still gamed and thought that hopefully he'd put together something serviceable.

And here he is with other people's money making Freelancer 2.0 but without any publishers to step in and actually make it. No matter what backers get, assuming anything at all, it certainly won't be what Chris said it would be. And, as usual, the blame is 100% his. I'd advise him to switch careers but frankly he's probably safest to the rest of us where he is.

Another manifestation of the missing-the-point phenomenon, Shaw said, is college students' habit of purchasing posters that advertise products. "Companies normally pay to have their wares touted," Shaw said. "But an incredibly high number of college undergraduates are willing to plunk down $15 for a poster of the Taco Bell chihuahua or Budweiser lizards, enabling companies to generate revenue from something that is supposed to be an expense."

I like the fundraising angle, myself, but here's the thing; Skadden has not mentioned a number. They won't mention a number until they have discovery, then they'll entertain the offer at the Settlement conference in January 2019, assuming the schedule hasn't slipped due to CiGs inability to get poo poo together. It's not in Skadden's interest to mention a number until they have everything they looked for in discovery and know how boned CiG really are.

CiG can fundraise and make an offer of settlement, but(t), and this is entirely pulled from my rear end, you have to look at the fact that Skadden are involved, they're ticking all the boxes for a Jury trial (which means that they're not really relying on deep technicalities) and might actually have some leverage in terms of poaching both IP and staff. It feels like a really messy knife-fight of a divorce to me. I feel like Crytek took poo poo very personally. Very, very personally.

Weirdly, I still see absolutely no defence from CiG - They should have cock-slapped them back with definitive proof if they had it, but all they've done is complain about discovery.

And the cost of Skadden increases every day they have them retained so they have to keep that sum in the back of their minds while negotiating with CIG, if they go down that path.

Roadmap update :toot:

Characters - 0 Entries

Locations - 2 Entries
  • Refineries - The design, creation and implementation of locations where players can go to sell unrefined ore that they have mined. Players can also visit these facilities to purchase refined minerals to sell elsewhere.
  • CommArray Revision - Creating and implementing revisions to the CommArray stations positioned around the universe. These not only facilitate the ability to transfer data but also provide ECN coverage to report any security violations.

Gameplay - 4 Entries
  • Liquid/Gas Exploration - This feature includes all the tech and gameplay work required to allow players to search for, identify, and extract deposits of liquids or gases on planets as well as in space.
  • Expanded Cargo - This feature will increase the sizes and types of cargo containers that the players will use to transport commodities and goods. The current size is a single SCU, these crates will cover larger sizes and shapes.#
  • Data Running - The ability to transfer data between locations, but this system also includes the creation of data packets/tags to points of interest in the universe that allow it to be tracked. For example, a prospector identifies a vein of nickel. The location of that discovery becomes a piece of data that the prospector can transfer or sell.
  • Long Range Scanning - The system required to allow a ship to scan wider areas of space, find points of interest and travel to them. This will feature heavily with prospecting and exploration ships.

AI - 2 Entries
  • FPS Combat - AI Combat Styles - Work on this feature will introduce a variety of Combat styles that can be applied to NPC AI. Some of these initial personalities would range from untrained fighters to trained military, allowing a variety of flavors to an encounter.
  • Flight - Combat Styles - This feature will introduce a variety of combat styles to AI Pilots. These personalities would vary in their approach to a combat scenario in order to make each combat encounter a little more unpredictable. This update will also allow AI ships to attack ground targets.

Ships and Vehicles - 2 Entries
  • Origin 890 Jump - Building, implementing, and balancing Origin's luxury ship, the 890 Jump, as a flight ready ship in the game.
  • Banu Defender - Building, implementing, and balancing the Banu fighter as a flight ready ship in the game.

Weapons and Items - 3 Entries
  • Kastak Arms Coda - Designing and creating Kastak Arms' Coda ballistic pistol for use by characters in-game. The work includes asset creation, passes by numerous teams, and Design input on weapon balance.
  • Klaus & Werner Lumin V - Designing and creating Klaus & Werner's submachine gun for use by characters in-game. This includes asset creation, passes by numerous departments, and Design input on weapon balance.
  • Kastak Arms Firestorm - Designing and creating Kastak Arms' microwave cannon for use by characters in-game. This includes concept completion, asset creation, passes by numerous departments, and Design input on weapon balance.

Core Tech - 1 Entry
  • Performance Optimization - General optimization and engine improvements to increase stability and performance for the players. This includes continued transition of gameplay systems to Item 2.0 as well as investigation and resolution of possible memory leaks and performance spikes.
