I remember reading GPF on and off again over the years, but it was just so boring

It's like the comic has an Anti-Libluini Coating. This ALC makes it impossible for me to read more than about a dozen strips before my eyes glaze over and I slip into a stupefied coma.

El Goonish Shiv dances back and forth across this line multiple times, IIRC (though it's more Science Fantasy than Science Fiction).

El Goonish Shive is basically a fetish webcomic that goes to so much trouble to make itself fluffy, inclusive, and harmless that the fetish part barely even feels strange.

GPF was one of the earliest comics that I read on the Internet. I think I dropped off it when it turned out most of the characters were fundamentalist Christians or whatever that was.

This is true, and I think there's additional weirdness like it being illegal for prey animals to defend themselves with guns and stuff. Also some animals wear clothes and some don't which is really weird.

I mean, that's what it's going for. But like any comic strip that's been running for a decade-plus, there's all sorts of plot detritus laying around.

Short version:
Once upon a time, there was a normal Earth full of humans, much like ours. They developed a great many interesting things, like smart phones, time machines, and rocket ships, but they eventually polluted the Earth enough that they abandoned it. Most of the animals left on the Earth at this point perished, but the birds survived, and evolved over time into a sentient group able to figure out the humans' left-behind tools. They used these tools to travel back to prehistoric Earth and prevent apes from evolving into humans. Then they used other tools to genetically uplift the rest of the animal species to replace humans. Since the story operates on multiverse-rules, this resulted in a parallel Earth where furries exist instead of humans. Then the birds destroyed all their human-technology and tried to just be members of society. The end result is a world that mirrors our own, except that half the population still wants to kill and eat the other half.

And, then, yeah, this is used as a vehicle to tell stories about family and overcoming prejudice. And that's fine, it's just deeply weird.

Doesn't know the impossible.

Bobulus posted:

Since the story operates on multiverse-rules, this resulted in a parallel Earth where furries exist instead of humans.

also there were portals between the two where the fabric of reality was weaker, and if you crossed them you turned into whoever your equivalent furry/human person was, except there was that time the human version of one of Kevin's sisters crossed over, and discovered that as rabbits instead of 6 children her parents had had 66 children, so presumably her other 60 siblings don't have a human equivalent because they're just soulless abominations who's only purpose is to be eaten as food

also this is where their adoptive daughter came from, she's actually Princess Diana or some poo poo who fell through a portal instead of dying

also the birds didn't give up their technology even remotely, they kept using it to do things like trying to replicate domestication of the predator species (result: dogs now also enjoy stereotypical dog things in addition to hunting and murdering their peers) and time traveling the main characters to the stone age to try and convince them they were responsible were everything (because they were getting sick of this poo poo and wanted to bounce)

also the birds all eventually migrated en masse to the human side (see above), where they turned into dolphins because ???

also there was that one time a wolf and sheep were dating in high school, and the wolf showed his commitment to her by becoming a vegetarian, which is apparently accomplished by getting his entire digestive system replaced with a ruminant's, and literally nothing about any of that is ever addressed

also it wouldn't have helped because even the loving plants are implied to be sapient, most of them just don't have the communicative apparatus to express their horror at being eaten

also also also basically if your comic's starting point is that a portion if not all of your sapient population are biologically obligated to be serial murderers, literally any story you do is going to be hosed up somehow

Or, I guess, Zootopia sounds like if someone looked at Kevin and Kell and said "hey what if this wasn't horrifying".

When the punchline to your comic is 'the villain of this plot, a sapient thinking person, was eaten by the toddler, lol' poo poo gets kind of weird. Also a cabal of rabbits start making guns because they're tired of being eaten. This is seen as evil by the entire cast. Including Kevin, a rabbit. Murder is okay as long as you eat the corpse.

SlothfulCobra
Mar 27, 2011

At one point, Kell quit her old hunting job where her old boss regularly cannibalized her coworkers in dilbert-style workplace jokes to start up her own hunting business, providing meat for grocery stores. She got the startup capital to do so from the secret rabbit illuminati in charge of all rabbits, because they wanted less competition for resources from non-rabbit species.

There was also a plotline real early on where Kevin's ex-wife got together with Kell's boss and then told him all the rabbit secrets to avoiding being caught and eaten. In order to hide her true rabbit nature from the world, she went through an operation to turn her into a rat, and started eating meat.

The most recent big crazy thing was right in the wake of Charlottesville, where after a bat and a hedgehog had a strange hybrid child with both quills and bat wings, and there was a neo-nazi hate march against them, complete with tiki torches, protesting mixing the races. They ended up being thwarted by a bunch of trees, as the hedgehog is well-loved in the plant world from her plant therapy business. There was also a thing where she collected a lot of the neo-nazis' saliva, did a DNA test, and then doxxed them by publishing their identities along with the fact that they all had some kind of mixed background.
