Alternatively, you and several others took my statement as something other than what was said. [...] I said if you connect with him, you've got problems

Let's be clear, you said people who failed to connect with the relationship (not the man) should turn themselves in for child abuse and neglect. But I'll accept that maybe I didn't respond with full consideration for the entire contextual framework of that comment. I'll try to be fair to you and I apologize for taking it the wrong way.

If I were to distill my viewpoint on this it's that bad guys in stories are meant not to be unfathomable devils but instead expressions of conflict within the human heart. You can identify with even the literally inhuman monsters in stories. Whether the author knows it or not, they meant for you to. In fact when you see something of yourself it those boogeymen it makes them even more frightening. That recognition makes you more human, improves your understanding of the human condition, enables you to better connect with others including children and treat them humanely.

For what it's worth, I can connect with Kratos. I have a much younger friend I'm trying to help get a foot in the door at my job and my boss has decided I should mentor them. I'm a different person at work and one I'm not sure I would like. I'm a sink or swim leader and people on my team either love or hate me. This is the way I know to be successful and get poo poo done and I don't know how to impart that to my friend and still be the kind of friend I want to be. I worry I will be distant and unapproachable, or wind up being a terrible mentor because I go in the other direction and don't teach her to do things herself.

Playing this game, I've realized I don't need to worry. She's my friend and has known me forever and she will see through the sturm und drang. I can trust her to do that and in turn do what I need to do to be the best teacher I can be. So that's my experience with this game, I did have a human connection with Kratos. I'm not saying this is a Faulkner novel animated in 4k but I am saying it's good storytelling and well writ characters and that sets it light years apart from certain other AAA games (one might say it's a "far cry" from those games in terms of narrative structure).

Your statement literally said, if you connect with this story, you are abusing your child.

Even ignoring the obvious hyperbole of the CPS statement, ignoring you and I could have a different definition of connecting with a story, and ignoring that I'm comparing the actions of a video game character taken out into a modern stereotype, my statement said none of that. I even used the words "borderline abusive" if you take every word was it's literal definition with no context.

I would rather say if you can't get behind the relationship at all either you're not a especially empathetic person or you haven't been paying attention. Kratos was raised in Sparta. He would have been taken from his family at age 7 for essentially boarding school where he would be encouraged forget his family and give his loyalty to his new leaders and comrades. At age 12 would have moved into barracks and started full time training as a warrior. He would have been under an older warrior who likely took the job to support pederasty. He would have been starved to encourage him to steal food and then beaten horribly for doing so. At 12 he would be basically on his own and considered to be an adult. If Kratos's relationship with his parents had not been severed by age 7, it would have been by age 12. Atreus is maybe 10 or 11.

Kratos does not abuse his son. He is rough on him but fair. He spends most of his time teaching him. He's trying to make up for being absent and trying to connect. At the same time doesn't want him to know anything about his former life because of the road he feels that will put him on. Kratos wants to love his son, but he is afraid because anything he allows himself to feel strongly about is either taken from him or destroyed, sometimes (often) by himself. Even if he could connect with his son in a way we would consider loving, he's not sure he knows how and he fears finding that out. Remember him telling the story of the frog and the scorpion. Kratos believes he is the Scorpion. He pulls his hand back not because he does not want to love his son but because he does not want to doom him.

Also, the story is not bad. So far it's following two journeys of the hero. One of the important things about storytelling is the ultimate goal is not important and that in fact is just a signpost. On top of that carrying their mother's ashes is in an excellent narrative choice. It heightens their connection as father and son at every turn, it turns the conversation and the story naturally to the mother again and again, it gives every character they meet a reason to engage them and have an emotional reaction. It reminds you that Kratos, who finds spirits annoying, who claims to never help anybody, is doing this for his departed wife and only friend, not to help her soul rest, not to accomplish anything at all, but only because she asked. Everything Kratos tells his son during this quest is given the lie by the quest itself, and his son knows it. Atreus sees what his father is going through and what he's willing to do for a bag of bones and ash, and this is how he learns that his father loves, and loves with fierceness and loyalty. This is what guides his growth, and the conversations are him trying to get Kratos to admit it while being amazed that his dad doesn't know how transparent he really is.

the dwarves are extremely well done, well acted, written and animated.
Sindri is my husbando, a fraiser-dwarf neat freak but still brave enough to put his dukes up at Kratos

"Well thats just a waste of a perfectly good apple,"
and
"Tell me what? You didn't put that in your mouth did you?"

and bluedwarf being like "He eatin' alright?" was very sweet

I like the traveller enemies who i guess travelled from Lordran, the ones with the shields on their backs can get hosed though, I haven't figured out a way to efficiently deal with them yet

just did the 100 enemy trial in muspelheim and gently caress me that was a goddamn chore, though not as bad as the invulnerable dark elf, did it in one go but it took about 25 minutes of constant fighting with very few health drops, probably made me a lot gud'er though

also just got to the second bonus realm and I really dig how each of the realms is like a kinda alternate mode to play the game in. I think the only thing holding back the game is the tight camera which doesnt quite suit the combat but the whole game comes together really well, i've gone from straight up not liking it very much to thinking its a very good game

They go so out of the way to depict the Aesir and Odin in particular as incredibly awful assholes. I wonder if that characterization will stick or if they used all of their nuance on Kratos. There's just a throwaway line after you fight Sigrun about how Odin basically destroyed Midgard by corrupting the Valkyries for no apparent reason. Curious to know if Mimir and Freya's take on the rest of the Norse pantheon is perspective or truth

The only major improvement id want for a sequel other than more weapons and a bit more involved skill specialisation would be loot scaling.
Since gear level is your player level it makes going back and doing earlier sidequests pointless in terms of progression.
Scaling loot plus some fixed legendaries would be nice.

You still get exp which can buy skills but the diff between you and a 2 levels higher mob is so stark that your slight increase in arrow damage or whatnot won't help much.

i'm already mad that it's probably gonna be 3 years before we get the sequel to this

i mean maybe 2 if they've already started and just use the exact same engine but the sheer amount of work they've done in telling the story (from a technical standpoint) just couldn't be done in less than 2 years. like they had to have spent a solid year on camera angles, pans etc alone

So bit of a question. How is the boss variety in the game? Spoilers for temple of light stuff The troll was pretty mediocre as a opening and I really don't like that fight. Then Baldur (I'm assuming) impressed me and was pretty fun. Then it's been all downhill with a troll recolor and literally just a normal enemy with more hp. It picks up later right? Kinda nervous that they made a big "wow!" first boss then left the rest of it for end game.

I'm curious how many people are on Normal and how many play it on Hard. I realize Hard will probably be more manageable later on but I just got to Alfheim and feel like I should take the difficulty down to Normal for the first time as a reward for grinding my blood and bones through some truly hellish scenarios where I thought "I'm never going to win this fight."

I took the difficulty down to normal after the first fight because it felt like the enemies had way too much help and it was taking too long.

I bumped it down way before you did. I figure there is almost a 100% chance I'll play again and I can gently caress with hard or GMGOW later. Normal seems good. It's not that hard but doesn't just give you the win either, and there is really tough side poo poo all over that would probably have me hating the game right now if I stuck with hard. Normal seems perfect for the average joe.

I do wish the harder modes didn't involve making the enemies such damage sponges.

No seriously, what the gently caress. I came back 2 levels and probably a third of the game later and I'm basically doing the same damage. I'm even trying out resists and seems like that's doing nothing. Can someone give me a clearer, spoiler free idea of the progression in this game? I think I played for easily 15+ hours this weekend and the game suggests there are seven realms, and although I did all the side stuff I could find which took up quite a bit of time, I've still only been to Alfheim and the main story keeps taking place near the main lake. Is there actually 7 realms in the game or is that a red herring? It just seems weird to me because Alfheim took a good 3 hours or something to do everything. I can't imagine I'm only 1/7th of the way through.
