They could take a note from Drag Race: Thailand and have a two episode-long commercial.

Like when they did Absolut commercials in season 2? It's at least charmingly self-serving when they're advertising Ru's products, but Jeffrey Moran showing up was never a great sign.

Personally I miss when Mike Ruiz would show up for photography stuff. Did he and Ru have a falling out or does this have to do with the unspoken "No Gay Men Allowed" rule for guest judges?

I was making a joke about rus stance on trans queens with that post btw, I don't think there's actually a rule about gay judges, just a craven profit motive in having mainstream celebs instead

And we've had a trans person judge, haven't we? I can't remember if Candis Cayne would also judge back in the day when she coached a bunch of challenges.

We're talking about the last couple of seasons tho. Way more mainstream celebs these days. In older seasons they've had Chaz Bono and Fortune Feimster judge too.

True. Though back then they'd try for as mainstream as they could get on the budget they had, but usually they'd at least try to get mainstream-but-still-gay-culture type people, like an Elvira or Kathy Griffin.

The judges have been p lame lately but I always expected it to go this way when the show started to get more eyes on it and more money behind it.

And yeah I nearly forgot Chaz! He used to be on all the time.

I think you missed part of the convo because this is exactly what we're lamenting. That the show is shifting to primarily being focused on the straight audience rather than just being somewhat accessible to them. It sucks that drag has to be made safe to acquire a bigger platform.

Yeah I just saw the 'no gay or trans judges' thing tbf. I agree 100% about the mainstreaming in general of the show, though I take more issue with the structure of the competition itself/lack of gay af mini challenges and pit crew more than who's on the judging panel. They've always had stinkers there.

I'm only halfway through Drag Race Thailand now and holy poo poo the quality level on this is insane. I'm kinda worried that the next episode of US Drag Race is going to seem super low effort compared.

I can't imagine the tantrums that would happen in US Drag Race if they recreated that red carpet photo shoot with ANTM winners and secret scene stealing.

Also Panpan for president and new-Ru and forever boyfriend. I'm in love.

I feel like the biggest issue with Project Runway was less sticking too rigidly to the format and more that it slowly drifted away from what originally made it interesting. It shifted from a show about design ("design the postal uniform of the future, what would that look like?" "design a costume for an ice dancer, what does an outfit for an athlete require?" "can you make an outfit that would work for a drag queen? what details/silhouette/proportions does she need?") to a show about making normal, pretty gowns/red carpet dresses/RTW looks. I feel like this became very, very apparent when it switched over to Lifetime/when Anya won, but maybe things have gotten better since I've stopped watching. In that sense I think Drag Race suffers from some similar issues, especially as the last few seasons seem to have become more reliant on scripted acting challenges instead of just letting the queens be creative.

Yeah. She's not a very clever person.

I agree. I'm rewatching s5 (and untucked s5 for the first time) and there's way more space for the queens to be off the cuff. I forgot thdt Roxxxy is loving hilarious when she gets to wing it. ~*sequins dress*~

More mini challenges like the drag dolls (that led to lil pound cake) or the "drag up camo poo poo fast" challenge would be amazing, and there were way more challenges that focused on designing cohesive looks and characters from scratch.

gently caress aquaria making jokes yet again when the black queens talk religion. She's a privileged new york kid who is getting away with way too much boy body.

God bless the vixen vowing to kill Blairs rapist. I'd watch a reality show where the vixen just went Chicago on sex creeps in full drag.

Oh my god Blair St Clair! Monet! This season's queens are bringing it--heart, drama, cattiness, memes, EVERYTHING

The challenge was actually fantastic. It was smart to include an "information" challenge because it's really engaging for the audience back home too.

I love these queens. Vixen was perfect when she responded to Blair.

Monique is physically incapable of opening her mouth without giving me life. Even when bearing her soul, she does it in the most entertaining way. I feel like the last queen to really have that factor was Alyssa. Some of the antics in S5 did drag down Alyssa's likability, but Monique is sweet to everyone. The only issue, then, is her uncanny ability to get robbed constantly.

SHINee's back

Oh man, Blair. A lot of emotional moments on this show feel really contrived or like producer meddling, but Blair's story tonight was just heartbreaking-- and Monique's in Untucked, as well. I'm so sad to see her go, but I don't think she should have made it much further. I wanted her to at least hit Snatch Game, if only b/c I would probably live for whichever oldschool Hollywood broad she would play. I think she's a fierce queen, though, and now she's taking steps to move past what happened to her I'm sure she'll grow into a glamazon bitch ready for an All Stars season.

Also I might be biased but I think that lipsync was honestly pretty close. Blair was lower energy and imo Vixen definitely won it, but girl was giving me some emotion there and she was doing what she does well. But that song is a bop and what she was doing didn't mesh as well as Vixen's.

Challenge was really fun and good, I'm glad they've been bringing back more improv challenges on top of the sewing challenges, it's a big part of what makes this season feel like oldschool Drag Race for me. The dumb-rear end mini challenges are also A+++. I honestly would not mind if the DragCon Panel challenge turned into one of the returning ones.

I love all of these queens and I'll hate to see anyone go home at this point. Even Aquaria has wormed her way into my heart with how incredibly awkward she is, but she still isn't giving me as much to love as the other girls. Cracker's honestly down there with her. They're both very in their heads idk. I'm gunning for Monique, Kameron, Asia and tbqh stanning for Eureka pretty hard r/n. She can be obnoxious as gently caress but she is fierce and very good at these challenges and always at least looks good on the runway, if not sometimes great. And tbh I kind of live for how loud she is.

I'm falling in love w/ Kameron he is loving adorable.

Wonder if the library will also be open next week.

Eureka has been pretty tolerable, dare I say likable, the past two episodes. She's even had a few adorable interactions with other queens. Maybe burying the hatchet with Vixen, then getting validated with a win was the turning point.
