spurs in review

LaMarcus Aldridge: after an underwhelming season last year that led to a frustrated LaMarcus pondering a trade this previous offseason, the spurs were able to get this guy back into the fold and he showed up in a big way. i really mean in a big way. the guy led his team in scoring more than just about anyone in the nba. he put in the work every night and didn't say boo. the guy has seriously endeared himself to spurs fans this year. this is the year LaMarcus truly became a spur and everyone is happy to have him. for a quiet guy, he also seemed to have done a good job leading this team. you could see people gravitate to him and rally around him. LaMarcus is cool as hell and what i consider to be a quintessential nba pro. glad he made the all-star team, let's hope he catches an all-nba team too. he deserves it this year. oh yeah, also, when his shot is falling, its one of the prettiest things in the nba.

Kyle Anderson: Slo-mo had an interesting year. he's a great defender, but goes for steals a little too much. he's an excellent facilitator, but his lack of offensive game led to teams just sagging off him and playing the lanes. he's definitely nba quality, but the team needs to figure out a better way to integrate him, and kyle really needs to work on his shooting this offseason. first he was afraid to even shoot corner threes, then he started hitting a few, then he started missing them all, then he stopped taking them. he's gotta find something that works better

Danny Green: there's no way to sugar-coat it: danny green had a bad year. it was cool to see him much more able in putting the ball on the floor, but let's be real: danny needs to shoot and make threes and he was loving awful at that this season. just awful. his defense was ok, but who gives a poo poo if you aren't a threat on offense. green saw a lot more of the bench this year. let's hope he can find his shot or the spurs can get people in who draw away enough attention to give green even more space, not that it helped when he was open this season. it'll be interesting to see how he handles his upcoming...option? i think.

Patty Mills: Patty was put in a very tough situation this season. he is not a starting point guard. he is an energy guy that comes in off the bench and hits timely shots. he definitely grew in his position this year. he drove and finished better toward the end of the season and in the playoffs really seemed to shoot better. he's definitely a chucker, but that is his role off the bench and the spurs were absolutely desperate for offense, particularly from the perimeter.i think the spurs got their 12million from him this year and he's great to have around. once he can return to leading the bench mob i think his contract will be fine. also, his lack of size is really, really showing, but once again his role is "spark off the bench" so his size shouldn't be too much of a factor in that role

Dejounte Murray: i have mixed feelings about dejounte. he is the very definition of potential, but now we're in the nba and its much more about "what the gently caress can you do for me right now." dj only really shines on defense and in transition where he can run. but his offensive game is criminally under-developed and to be a modern nba point guard you gotta be able to score. its only his second year, so there's plenty of room to grow. but its also his second year and we haven't seen much growth. let's hope the spurs lock him up with the shooting coach Chip this offseason.

Manu Ginobili: Manu is God. Manu is Life. Seriously though, Manu is a literal basketball god descended from the heavens. No, but seriously, the guy is an actual living legend and its really such a joy to watch him play. he really is just an absolute competitor and absolute unit. its not always sunshine and rainbows though. his 3 didn't seem as deadly this year and for just about every amazing manu play there is a bad turnover or other sloppy play. but spurs fans know the drill: Live by the Manu, Die by the Manu. its just awesome that he's still out there, still balling out of his mind, still winning games, and it looks like he'll be doing it all again next year. couldn't be happier for the guy.

Rudy Gay: Rudy is still getting comfortable with his body and it shows. he tries and fails to do a lot of things that must have come much easier to him before the achilles tear. but he's really starting to come back. really starting to look like his old self. i hope he opts in or resigns and can continue his growth with us. i also just really like Rudy. the guy is charismatic as all hell and when his game starts to click its really cool. he's a lot like lma to me, one of those quintessential nba pros. he also seems to get along well with lma. i hope his future is bright and those pearly whites stay in san antonio. he's one of those guys i really root for

Tony Parker: Tony had a bad year in just about every way. he didn't play much and didn't play very well when he did. some people say he came back from injury too early, but i don't really know about that. he's pretty much guaranteed a contract because he's a spurs legend and wants to play. someone floated the BAE or something that can give him 3.3 mil. i haven't given up on tony completely. it just wasn't his year. he'll hit the gym this offseason and see if he's still got it. regardless of what people think about him, he's a major part of the big 3 and deserves a shot with the franchise.

Pau Gasol: 16mil really was too much for the guy. to be fair, he has his moments and is actually an underrated rim protector. but against most teams they just pull him out on a switch and roast him. his offensive game is also just awful. he's never going to get the calls he got 10 years ago so he needs to figure out how to muscle or finesse those shots in. it was bad that he was pretty much the spurs only other big. he can play high-low well and is really a great passer but the spurs need more out of him and he's got to give it. hopefully they can find a way to integrate him better and let's hope he spend time in the offseason at least working on his 3. best case scenario is if he spends the offseason convincing his brother Marc that the spurs are cool and good and he should come play here.

Davis Bertans: davis is great for what he does. he has a very surprising amount of athleticism and intensity. the guy can ball. he needs to work on his defense, but its a drat shame it took spurs so long to realize that he can actually play out at the perimeter alright and is great for chasing around catch-and-shooters. lets hope we can retain him nice and cheap, but we'll see. hopefully the natural bias against a giant ginger who's already torn his ACL twice lets the spurs retain him and play him more. i really feel like bertans is one of the better role players the spurs have

Joffrey Lauvergne: Joff started out the season looking really awesome. then he dislocated his finger and was never the same. borderline unplayable, really. he got absolutely no love from the refs so people just clowned on him and he doesn't have the size to make up for it. will he be around next year? dunno. maybe he's better than what we saw. maybe there's some potential. but probably not, cuz when he played real minutes this season he blew

Bryn Forbes: let's put an end to the forbes experiment, shall we? the guy is just not nba caliber. he can't create his own shot and he's too short. he also just doesn't make enough 3s and for some reason loves to drive the lane and take weird floating 2s. he gets targeted on defense and teams go on runs when he's in. i feel bad because it looks to me like pop decided on forbes over white (not unusual, white's a rook and the g-league was good for him) and white just seems to be a much better player. i think the spurs just couldn't let the shooting potential go untested, but now we've tested it thoroughly and its just not there. its too bad too because forbes is player a lot of people want to like. he's hungry and has a cool story. he's also pouty and not good enough. sorry Bryn, you had your shot.

Brandon Paul: BP3 was supposed to be a defensive specialist who could also shoot 3s ok. but i think the absolute lack of offense and already solid defense left no room for him on the court. he hardly played this season. the spurs typically take a while to work a player in to the system, so maybe he'll be more ready next year. the guy plays with great energy and tries his rear end off, but he was also a bit too reckless and tried a bit too hard. only manu gets to manu

Derrick White: now this guy is promising. he and hilliard just dominated the g-league and white showed he can shoot the 3, get to the line, and score in other ways. all things the spurs need. he has good size so the spurs can make him a good defender. i want to see a full year of this guy and i'm looking forward to next year. seriously, the future might be really bright for derrick white

Two Way Players Hilliard and Costello: don't know too much about them, but the spurs need big men, so hopefully costello pans out, even is he does seem a bit short (i was gonna say undersized, but he's a big boy). hilliard is a good player too, but i don't know if he's a spur. maybe his game spoke loud enough to convince pop, but i don't quite think so. spurs already have a ton of borderline guards, not sure hilliard is gonna move the needle. surely he'll be at training camp though.

Kawhi Leonard: MIA

it was a tough year. a year that either strengthens or severs your connection to the franchise. i'm proud they made the playoffs and took a game off GSW. its too bad they lost game 3 because that could have at least made things interesting, but the talent and offensive gap was just too much. i'm thankful for lma in a big way. he really carved out a place in every spurs fan's heart. let's enjoy the rest of these exciting playoffs and get ready for next year. things are only gonna get more interesting for the spurs between now and october. i have a sort of 2014 feeling from next year's spurs. they're pissed they didn't perform at the highest level and next year they're going to come out swinging

Kawhi is under contract next year and can't opt out until 19-20. I find it hard to believe he'd sit out next year and still have a career.

There's language in the CBA that allows teams to freeze contracts if the player is medically cleared so it really has a lot of mess potential.

This is all from actual quotes by Butler's agent and an interview from Taylor on the radio a couple days ago. The Taylor interview stuff was a little speculative but he was extremely noncommittal about Thibs when asked about the season and was critical on their playstyle and how the roster was built/used.

The Butler stuff isn't really that worrying, though I wonder if he wouldn't leave if Thibs is let go.

I try not to speculate too heavily on sports, especially because my "wolfs in 7" didn't go well and none of us know for certain what happens behind closed doors in locker rooms and front offices, but here I go anyway.

As much as I'd love for Becky Hammon to swing in and actually develop some players, Thibs isn't going anywhere. Papa Glenn isn't about to eat 3 years of a 5-year contract. The Wolfs made it to the playoffs, we had two (TWO!) players make it to the all-star game, and the Summer of '17 was pretty darn good. We bagged us Jimmy God Damned Buckets, finally ripped off the Rubio "will they/won't they" band-aid, got an amazing glue-guy in Taj, and, I gotta be honest, Teague is a good point guard. Wiggins's defensive efforts improved by leaps and bounds near the end of the season (it couldn't have gotten much worse, really), buuuuut...

Teague's Pacers highlights had 100% convinced me that he was going to be a good point guard and make me not feel so bad about losing our pretty Ricky. However, Thibs's system is not the Pacers's system and the season started out way herky-jerky. I dunno what kind of offensive system Thibs uses that isn't just an attempt to get the ball to a guard in an isolation mismatch and that's kinda boring to watch. KAT's defense is still atrocious and I'm seriously concerned about whether he got yipped during that Rockets series :ohdear: The problem with Butler is that he can't really be divorced from Thibs, but maybe with his knee being a ticking time bomb, maybe that's not the worst thing ever if they're both gone. Crawford has gotta go, as cool of a dude as he is, I just dunno whether he contributed enough to make up for his ridiculous shot selection. We don't need that kind of volume-shooting role player, we need people who are difficult to score against. Keep Rose in a cryo-chamber until playoffs and thaw him out, but he doesn't need to play during the season very much. Give those minutes back to TYUS JONES, GODDAMMIT.

I'll echo Papa Glenn's frustrations. I wanted to see more bench players playing more time that isn't garbage time. MGH had proven himself to be a tough defender, Belly is exactly the role player we need him to be, and why not throw Amile and Patton in there every now and then? They need to develop and I just don't see that happening under Thibs. Thibs doesn't play his own bench that he put together and I'm no head coach but how the heck are you gonna develop players if they never play

Basically the fan base is very much like "Where's KAT's development? Why did Wiggins regress offensively? What the gently caress is an 8-man rotation and why is it happening in the NB-fuckin'-A?" There's still a ton of potential in the team, Thibs is just having one devil of a time unlocking it.

They had the 4th best offense in the league, there is nothing they really need to do on that end. The defense needs a lot of work, but time is the best salve for that. Some bench reshuffling is in order as well.

Oh, and Tyus was hurt in the playoffs. During the season Rose and Tyus shared a backcourt.

Right, yeah, I'm just saying I'd prefer to see Tyus on the floor because he's a good point guard to passes well and engages everyone whereas Rose.... isn't exactly that.

This is just "sources" as far as I know which is why I didn't mention it but apparently Taylor saw how well Rubio and Shabazz were playing for Utah and Milwaukee and was a bit nonplussed, especially for Rubio because he had to be talked into giving the blessing to trade him.

it's not the end of the world if Thibs doesn't get canned but he does seriously need to adapt his coaching style or the Wolves aren't going to do anything in the playoffs but be that "team you don't want to play because they could steal a series off you."

Bazz was a Worse Crawford while he was here and I'm very glad that he's gone. We're better off with Teague and the Jazz are better off with Rubio. I think we can all agree that Taylor is an old man who doesn't really know a whole lot about basketball (see: the team's entire history).

Just because an offense is good doesn't mean you shouldn't strive for it to be better. I'm making more money this year than I ever have before, does that mean I should stop trying to improve myself so I can get a better and higher paying job down the line?

Also Rubio is a better defender than Teague so he still makes them better on that end to help hide those problems.

Fair point. Also, THIS Buckets interview from the day before the wolfs were eliminated makes me very :smith:!

https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/jimmy-butler-back-in-a-bulls-uniform-someday-not-as-far-fetched-as-it-sounds/

quote:

MINNEAPOLIS — Everything hurts on Jimmy Butler these days.

Start with the surgically repaired meniscus in his right knee, and go in every direction from there.

He’s minutes removed from a Monday walkthrough — make that a limpthrough in his case — and needs the assistance from a Timberwolves public-relations staff member.

There’s obviously a price that goes into the pursuit of winning, and like he did with the Bulls far too often, Butler feels he’s the one footing most of the bill.

“I just don’t think there have been many people that have understood how important winning is to me,’’ Butler told the Sun-Times. “I just had a conversation about that very thing with somebody — not important who — but I put so much into this game and I only play to win. I don’t play for any individual stats or accolades. And at times I get lost in how everybody is not built the way that I’m built.

“The same with Thibs [Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau]. People don’t understand that he puts so much time into his craft. He understands what it takes. But sometimes I just look around, and I don’t understand how or why you all don’t love to get better the way that I do.’’

And that’s exactly why his stay in Minnesota could be short.

Butler, and to a certain extent former Bull Taj Gibson, were brought in by Thibodeau to teach toughness to young, talented players such as Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.

“In evaluating where we were, you’re trying to erase 14 years of losing,’’ Thibodeau said of Butler’s effect on the team. “And so we knew we had to add toughness. On top of him being a top-10 player, he’s mentally tough and physically tough, and if you look at what our record is when he plays versus when he doesn’t play, it tells you how valuable he is.’’

The Timberwolves were 37-22 (.627) with Butler in the lineup during the regular season and 10-13 (.434) without him. It’s the difference between being down 3-1 to the top-seeded Rockets in the first round of the playoffs and a path in which they could have easily been a No. 4 or 5 seed.

No wonder Butler has spent much of his first year in Minnesota trying every trick in the book to get his teammates to understand urgency. It’s the same leadership style that several young Bulls players resisted before he was traded.

And while he has seen improvement with his new team, will it be enough to keep him around when he can opt out and become a free agent next season?

“Young guys in this league don’t understand urgency,’’ Butler said. “These guys don’t understand that you never know what the league brings, the times may bring. I think they do understand what it takes to win here and they continue to learn that.

“Decisions I make, the money, my contract, all of that will handle itself. I don’t ever worry about my money. I already have enough money for the rest of my life. It’s all about winning.’’

That’s why a return to the Bulls isn’t that far-fetched. After next season

Team president Michael Reinsdorf is a huge Butler fan, and the feeling is mutual. Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn, Lauri Markkanen and a soon-to-be draft pick might need some tough love.

“I loved the city of Chicago, and I love the Reinsdorfs,’’ Butler said. “I’m forever grateful for them in taking a chance on me, allowing me to become the player that I am today. It’s still incredible to me that I got to hoop in a Bulls jersey. I got to play in the house that [Michael] Jordan built, that [Scottie] Pippen played, all that stuff. That’s because of the -Reinsdorfs.

“If the time comes where I say, ‘You know what, I do want to end this thing in a Bulls jersey,’ I think that would be amazing. But it’s all about being wanted and winning.’’

“And no general manager Gar Forman?’’ Butler was asked.

He then laughed and limped away.

I'm curious as to how this will play out. This is probably where the cancerous accusations had come from, but maybe it depends on perspective. Been going back and forth with a buddy of mine about the wolfs season and realized that this would have been the third season with Flip back at the helm. Would have had KG tutoring KAT, Wiggins, and Lavine that whole time and boy, that team woulda been REALLY fun to root for. I really don't like Glenn Taylor anymore.

All days are nights to see till I see thee; and nights bright days when dreams do show me thee.
We yearn for the days of a 30 win team featuring starting PG Luke Ridnour.
