FoldableHuman posted:I mean, the same argument Splimby is applying to CAD could just as well be applied to RPO: that Ernest Cline's unskilled sincerity accidentally created an absurdly accurate portrait of the material obsessed nerd's obliviousness to the wider world and resistance to learning anything of substance preferring instead to catalogue superficial trivia and rote memorization. Cline even managed a heaping dose of that specific flavour of nerd misogyny where they think that objectifying pretty girls who aren't Hollywood pretty basically makes them bell hooks. I was absolutely staggered by the reveal of Art3mis's real self somehow being presented as "oh don't worry, you're pretty to me", like she's some hideous troll monster. Oh, and then the unsolicited hands all over the face. No. No no no no no.

I'm kinda looking forward moreso than anything to do with the prequels (which the messages and underlying things it says can be entirely gained by the 1 genuine good one, RoTS, as opposed to the first two which while showing the same systemic flaws in the universe people moaned about are also just utterly miserable to watch.), is the one way I kind of noticed you could take this and apply it to the Snyder Superman films. Namely, all cape flicks are just about elitism and authoritarianism when you really strip it away, and there's nothing about Snyder's works that can hide that. Hell, he practically guns for it. E: Good one is subjective, but I honestly liked Sith for all it's flaws. I'm not gonna claim that it's a cinematic masterpiece here, just that in addition to showing the problems the SW universe can't hide in the Prequels, it's also enjoyable. McDiarmid is goddamned good. People remain super weird about the prequels after almost 20 years. They're perfectly fine movies that suffer from being prequels to one of the most beloved trilogy of all time. They're fine. Not great because they have quite a few flaw,s but none of these flaws are big or terrible enough to make them bad movies. But because of the hype and the love for the originals and weird nerd hyperbole culture they're suddenly the worst things ever and peopel go crazy at anyone saying "they're not that bad". There's a lot of material in trying to figure out why people are so weird about the prequels.

They're not very good and kind of boring and really ugly. I just re-watched them before TLJ came out. There's good stuff peppered in, but overall they're not pleasant films to watch. Except when Palpatine is on screen.

There’s a discussion that never made its way here about how Lucas wanted Star Wars to be Vietnam from the point of view of the viet cong, and that for a long time he thought it would be subversive. Like he thought seeing a bunch of white Americans as underdogs against a technologically superior foreign empire would make Americans think of how America was the bad guy in Vietnam. This is supposedly well documented. George Lucas has interesting ideas but can’t communicate them for poo poo, is what I’m saying.

finally got around to watching lindsay ellis's hobbit videos - I hadn't watched any of her stuff before, but as someone who was originally very excited for the hobbit films it was fascinating to see a breakdown of how everything... broke down. It also bummed me out because I still get chills from the scene where the dwarves sing The Misty Mountains Cold, and it makes me wistful for what could have been.

I'm going to be a philistine here for a moment (re: my entire posting career), I don't think Lucas's vision stated here ends up amounting to anything since Star Wars as a real product and cultural phenomenon has no subversiveness to it all. That is to say that it's place as the ultimate embodiment of capitalist entertainment thoroughly annihilates anything subversive or underdog that Lucas might have intended since it was turned around from the start and became completely part of the establishment rather than undermining it. khwarezm fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Apr 27, 2018 |

That is to say that it's place as the ultimate embodiment of capitalist entertainment thoroughly annihilates anything subversive or underdog that Lucas might have intended since it was turned around from the start and became completely part of the establishment rather than undermining it. That’s correct. His ambitions (if they were real) ended up making the opposite of what he thought he was doing. White Americans as noble, justified underdogs is literally the way Americans see themselves every minute of every day, including during Vietnam. People criticized Star Wars on its release for having reactionary politics (it did) or for constituting a childish retreat into escapist fantasy (it was). Lucas may have legitimately had left politics or still does (he hosed over his neighbors to build low-income housing and adopted kids rather than making them with his wife), but he is not competent enough to realize them on film. Another good example might be Red Tails, which he genuinely thought was a blow against hollywood racism.
