I liked John Mulaney's new special, but man its so obvious how when he goes on any talk show he just does 2 minutes from his set with the host.

I went to see his show on Saturday, so looking forward to seeing the differences. He did a fair amount of local stuff, as well as crowd work (I don’t go to big comedy shows usually and he was sold out, and people couldn’t stay in their seats. Constantly moving around, which threw him too). You could definitely tell the bits he’d done on TV, mainly the SNL monologue, as the crowd laughed extra hard.

It’s weird, to me Mulaney doesn’t feel like a big time comedian but it’s awesome he’s doing so well.

That's what most stand up comics promoting their specials do.

He burns a routine so good most comedians would build 20 minutes around it as his opening few lines. Like, even if you don't think he's funny, he is a master of a certain type of stand up comic form and his delivery is always perfect. He keeps everything more or less clean so that when he does go dark or curse it actually matters and isn't just done for the hell of it.

It's a real shame his show was so terrible, he's as good at standup as Seinfeld thinks he is.

edit: The bit I liked the most was the "Dad cross-examining me on the schoolground incident"

Nope. It's a 10 episode series on YouTube Red. The first two episodes are free.

It's ok. I had a 6 month free trial and before this their claim to fame was a really lovely sci-fi movie about an alien super power armor that got split up with a bunch of dumbasses as earth's defenders or something. It was bad and i only watched maybe 10 minutes.

It's a series, but yeah the first episode came out a few months ago. It's not bad. Definitely not for everyone. Pretty creepy/funny. Much more creepy than you'd think.

edit: the entire background premise is lifted wholesale (and I do mean lifted wholesale, as in it's the exact same imagery and everything) from one of the major sub-plots in the Illuminatus! trilogy. Of course, when you see it, you'll understand that was obviously intentional.

Red vs Blue's popularity feels like one of those cultural divides where a soda or burger chain you've never heard of is insanely popular in southern states, or how SNK games sold crazy well in south america despite tanking everywhere else.

That's probably very accurate. RvB also got a late life boost in popularity. It was in Maxim, Stuff and on SPIKE along with some other Rooster Teeth content.

One of my high school teachers dated one of the RvB guys, and I met a few of them at a viewing of season 1 at a local theater way back in the day

Yeah its pretty crazy how they blew up, although they've kinda petered off a bit maybe? RvB was by far their best thing and now that Halo is dead...

TNW posted:

YouTube Red, Google’s new premium video service, was officially announced today and the internet is already drawing references to a porn site with a similar name. So why did YouTube decide to name its latest product Red?

“Choosing a name for a product is a challenging thing,” a YouTube executive said in a press Q&A session. “As we talked to users and fans in our studies, the term ‘red’ is often associated with YouTube. It has a lot of meaning in terms of love and the red carpet.”

With ad-blocking about the Web, YouTube also thinks that searching for that term will bring up related hits to its product and not RedTube.

“We’re not too worried about that other site.”

From an SEO standpoint, it’s actually pretty clever. Search for a video site with the names “Red” and “Tube” and you might just come across the Google product instead. It’s still a bit questionable from the branding point of view, however.

It's a really dumb name. Literally everyone knows about YouTube already they don't need extra attention from people mistakenly looking for porn. And any risk of associating your video service with porn can only be a negative thing. Also it's a generic and meaningless name with no premium feel at all. Anyway those are my takes from 2015 for those just catching up
