We know he was destitute for awhile, that he runs cons with Nott in order to make ends meet, so it could just be a product of his circumstance, but even when landed with money he makes an effort to maintain his filthiness. He declines having his clothes cleaned, doesn't wash his face (and in fact purposefully dirties it), and tries to find several ways to sneak into the restricted, ritzy part of town while refusing to opt for the easy solution of simply dressing nicer (at someone else's expense, even). It's mostly played for a joke, but when Pumat Sol cleans up Caleb with a spell, Nott freaks out and demands to know what's going on, which suggests she's never seen him cleaned up in their entire time knowing each other. He pursues filth in both a literal and metaphorical sense too. It was his idea to seek out the porn shop in the Tri-Spire, wanting the filthiest smut he could get his hands on. I'm also guessing he's an abuse case and his reasoning for being so dedicated to Nott is that she reminds him of a friend or sibling that he couldn't protect back then.

Right, but the smut was explicitly a front for something else. He was just looking for spellbooks and wasn't interested in the porn itself, which is why he gave it away so readily and even disposed of some in a bakery.

Oh thank God there's a thread! Half my gaming group gushed about this show for months and my DM actually ran a one-shot with the Tal'Dorei setting book for his friends who watched the show...and me, because he kept trying to twist my arm to watch it. It wasn't until I got a second monitor at work and put it on as background noise that I truly got into it. I can't watch people play RPG's because I want to be IN them, however this show and cast hooked me once I realized I didn't have to pay attention every single second. This morning I got to Season 1, Episode 85, A Bard's Lament. One, THAT scene was so drat intense. For half-an-hour I was absolutely enthralled. Two, "Little Elf Girl" and the off-camera crew firing Nerf guns after the sessions ends. I'm going to like this character. I'm going to like him a LOT.

Critical Role must be a really fun show for the crew to work on if the players’ relationships are any indication. The show would be terrible if it was just a job, but the whole gang (except Orion) are really close friends who hang out outside of the show and with other Geek & Sundry cast and crew all the time. The ren fair videos are always fun. Travis Willingham really is as good as he looks at the hammer game.

A hill giant is totally doable if they play smart. It's essentially a big ball of HP with no gimmicks except getting to attack twice.

If they were at full health/abilities, they'd be fine. Said enemy is only about CR 4 and has no particularly outstanding abilities. Like Blockhouse said, it's just a meatball of HP. Taliesin and Ashley haven't said a single thing about their pre-stream session and I have no idea.

If I recall, actually, Ashely didn't get a prestream session- hence why she was kinda flustered in her first combat since it was really her first time doing any of her class stuff. He’d obviously built the character, but IIRC he hadn’t named Doty yet, etc. Just got tossed into the deep end. What I’m trying to say is that Emmy Award-winning Sam Riegel is the best.

Sam having to bust Taryon out in the same episode Scanlan left meant the cast got to be genuinely shocked and still reeling from the emotional whiplash. Also Taryon is an amazing character and I actually love him more than I love Scanlan.

As some people discussed in spoilers above, Sam didn't actually know Taryon was debuting that night, and I'm not sure he even had his full sheet prepared, but it's a great bit of sleight of hand.

Ooh, so many choices and a sweet level up too. I hope the gentleman's offer is equally enticing, and I want them to go that route selfishly because it'd be fun to see how much they're willing to skirt up to truly seedy stuff and it's not really something we saw in campaign 1. I was worried Matt wasn't gonna get that side of things in there and then he snuck it in right under the wire. Either way they better take advantage of something for making a name there, as attractive as it can be to stay out of things and hit the road it's going to be a harsh reality when they get to the next town.

Liam tugging at my dang heartstrings this campaign. I feel like if I had just read that backstory somewhere I would've thought it was a little too much, but seeing him act it out really sold me on it, and sold me on Caleb. I just want Nott and Caleb to be okay, more that anyone else  The fight at the beginning really had me on the edge of my seat, also.

Did NOT expect the sleep spell to catch, that thing must have been LOW but Matt hadn't given any of his "it's looking pretty rough" type descriptors. Even without Sleep they probably still would've won given its remaining hp, but it was super clutch when it worked. Adding a Legendary Action to the fight made it loving intense, and the rolls were really falling Matt's way - the crit on Yasha loving HURT!

Sometimes DMs do things for dramatic tension. That sleep spell probably shouldn't have took, but the party was mostly down and I think he wanted the party to win. Legendary Actions are one of the only ways 5E has to adjust the action economy, so it's great for big single unit bosses.

During the fight someone said "it has Legendary actions!?" and Matt's response was "Yea, it's a frenzied solo". Is that something from the DMs Guide, like official rules for buffing an encounter or something like that?

Liam rolled a 23, so the monster had less than 23 hp left - supported by the damage it took to kill it after it awoke, so I don't think there was any funny business. I'm torn on the after waking attacks - they obviously had positioned themselves to attack as it wakes up, but they didn't explicitly say that. I would have been fine if Matt had allowed the Legendary Action hit before it went down - it wouldn't have changed anything except maybe knowing out Beau after all, the fight itself was already determined at that point.

The fake memories make sense because his Headmaster couldn't possibly have expected all three of their sets of parents to actually be traitors. But there's nothing to indicate fake memories were involved in everything else he did. So Caleb still willingly and happily killed a lot of other people. He just couldn't handle killing his own parents. That said I still don't find him that interesting of a character. His backstory notwithstanding, Caleb in the present is a reticent introvert who tends to go off and do things alone for his own reasons. While that's totally understandable given what we know now, it's a lot less entertaining than other characters. Maybe he'll be much more interesting once we actually start engaging with his backstory, the way Percy was boring in the Underdark until Taliesin got better meds and the Briarwood stuff started.
