I've been thinking about this whole red shirt thing. When the NBA finally allows eighteen year olds in the draft again the rookie award could simply be changed to an award for best player under 20.

When Lillard beat Davis for rookie of the year it didn't seem right given that he had four years of college to Davis' one. I know that a year of college may or may not be equivalent to a red shirt year in the NBA development wise but a 22 year old is sure going to be more physically and mentally developed than an 18 year old.

I could be a star player on a middle school basketball team. If I won an award for that how meaningful is the award?

E: fixed for revisionist history

You don't need to think about it. Every league has its own rules for what a rookie is, and Simmons is a rookie, but internet contrarians like to beat jokes into the ground. poo poo, in baseball you can play like a month and still be a rookie next season.

Every piece I've read about him mentions how quiet and emotionless he is, and his press conferences are definitely boring. He also seems to talk about his mother a lot. This is basically all the publicly available info on him.

Update: Two minutes into his press conference and Borrego brought up his mother before Pop.

Borrego was fine:

— Leaned a little too hard into the "players WILL respect my authority" thing but for a young guy I sort of understand why he'd lay it on thick. Also talked about being a family man a lot. Not much charisma but not humorless.

— No one would commit to pushing for the playoffs, which might signal a rebuild but might just be giving themselves cover/acknowledging reality.

— Mitch denied having a plan to "blow up" the team but left himself acres of wiggle room. Talked a little about Kemba but wasn't emphatic that he'd be around. Heaped a lot more praise on Batum, which makes sense as he's not going anywhere.

— Mitch talked a lot about trades and explicitly mentioned trading their pick — which he also mentioned during his own intro presser.

— Nobody seemed too enthused about Dwight Howard.

— Lots and lots of talk about "player development" which I assume is code for "we know we're going to suck"

— Talked about wanting to play as fast as possible, which the league must force all new coaches to say. They were eighth in pace last year but with Kemba - Batum - MKG - Marvin - Zeller - Monk - Bacon they could probably go even faster.

Let's be real. Going through high school with Davis' unibrow and hosed-up grill probably gave him more mental toughness than 4 years of college ball ever could.

To understand how exciting young Dwight was, imagine Clint Capela, but better at literally everything, plus he appeared to be a goofy, affable guy, won the dunk contest, and at one point I think he led the league in jersey sales. The turn his career took was crazy

The Sixers will have room for a max deal as soon as they pawn Bayless onto some other team. So LeBron/Paul George/whoever to The Process is confirmed. The problem is that a max wipes out the cap space needed to fortify the bench/keep JJ around. Cause the Sixers bench is uh, not great, as it stands. An army of guards with limited playing experience and Richaun Holmes is a very big weakness for a contending team. Sixers really need to bring back Illyasova, I think, and go find another wing somewhere. Belinelli is fun and a shameless gunner, but I'm not sure if we can fit him and Illysaova in with a max FA.

If the Sixers don't sign a max FA, gently caress it, run it back and re-sign everyone except Bayless. And still pick up another wing.

Toronto media is pretty toothless when it comes to the Raps and save all their emotional rage for the Leafs. Guys like Doug Smith, Eric Koreen, Josh Lewanwhatever and Bruce Arthur all love Casey.

I think he got fired because Masai didn't see the team improving with this core and since the core cant be moved he's hoping a new coach can make them a bit better.

This deadspin article, although a bit excessive, did a nice job capturing how relatively fortunate the Raptors have been though.https://deadspin.com/dwane-casey-paid-for-all-the-mistakes-the-raptors-never-1825963227
We typically think of them as a failure for not getting over the hump but the idea that they've got this good without a top 10 draft pick in quite some time and no big FA signings is pretty impressive.
Maybe I'm still scarred from the post-Carter years but I still really appreciate a team that consistently wins 50 games and each year plays a more attractive style of basketball than the last.

“Dwight’s a cool guy. For a month, we like talked on the phone, and he was always trying to give me prayers to get me out of porn and give me Bible verses to read. So then, I was going to go visit him when I was in Orlando, but I went over to this other guy’s house instead, Chris Kirkpatrick from N’Sync. And then Dwight started calling, and calling, and calling me, because he knew I was with Chris Kirkpatrick, so eventually at 3 in the morning, Chris was like don’t answer Dwight’s calls. “I get a text from Dwight at 3 in the morning — I’m outside Chris’s house. I’m like oh my god, what do I do? I was like, I got Dwight here and I got Chris in the other room and I’m talking to them back and forth. So finally I had to just pull Dwight in the bathroom and tell him he needs to go home. I was like I’m really sorry, I really like you, but this isn’t the time or place. When I pull him in the bathroom, he pulls his pants down, I was like, whoa. Yeah, and so I ran and started screaming.”

For what it’s worth those aren’t unusual things for vets to have during the off-season. But it should be a solid reminder that we aren’t talking about a low-mileage guy well before his prime and probably will be declining some point in that next contract.

They could do a max and still resign JJ. He's not getting $23M again obviously, but by all accounts he really likes it here. Keep in mind Fultz is getting big minutes next year. If they get a max type FA, and that's a big if despite our collective hubris, then it's FA/Simmons/Saric/Embiid + one of JJ/RoCo/Fultz depending on the lineup BB wants to go with. I think we saw a bit of the future with that TJ lineup in the playoffs, except it's Fultz starting at PG. If Fultz is your starter then you have JJ, RoCo, and TJ off the bench, which is pretty good. I'd love to have Ersan back too, I really like the lineup with him at center.

TLC and Korkmaz need minutes too if you want to find out what you've got, plus whoever they draft this year, plus Jonah Bolden is probably coming over. They need to figure out what they're doing with Holmes and Anderson. I like them both but who playing time is an issue.
