Ah I'm now hearing reports that the UFC officials were NOT held up by residents but by what has been identified as "A pale man with three haircuts and 500 tattoos" and he didn't have a gun but a backpack filled with cans of some kind of energy drink. UFC officials are in good health and the situation will likely not escalate beyond this as local police have said that they will do "fooking nothing."

UFC photographer (is actually the doorman's mom working "freelance") "Okay Tito, we need to take your picture for a tale of the tape graphic for our broadcast. Can you give us a mean looking face that shows how tough you are?" What Tito hears: "Okay Tito, try to give us the most lost and vacant stare possible. Almost like you failed the 5th grade for the 3rd time, and are somehow proud of it" 10 min later UFC photographer "Okay Wes, we need you to give us your meanest face for a tale of the tape graphic" What Wes hears: "Okay Wes, we want your saddest face - like you got a puppy for Christmas, but Santa forgot to put breathing holes in the box. The more lip exposed in your pout, the better"

Those things absolutely cause that to an extent but I think the reebok deal causes a lot of it too and gets glossed over. Back when most of us started fighting you would see the number 6 guy agree to fight the number 12 guy or whatever sherdog had them ranked at fairly frequently, like you could reliably see a few of those level of fights per ppv main card across weight classes, and I think a big part of their willingness to do that was even if they were on like a 25/25 contract they were gonna get 50-75k flat from having condom depot or bony acai or angry brazilian eyes on their rear end so that fight made financial sense regardless and neither of them was realistically knocking on a title shot anyway so there was little ground to lose in regards to career trajectory for either guy. Now the only sponsorhsip money they can make is this tiered reebok poo poo based on if they have had 700 ufc fights or are the champion, and since most fighters are not Donald Cerrone they don't make poo poo and the best financial thing they can do for themselves is angle for title shots constantly or get big money fights. So now a bunch of guys have mediocre contracts they probably negotiated under the assumption those sweet dynamic fastener checks would keep coming in and now instead get a flat cap of like $3000 in mandatory sponsorship money. In a different sponsorship structure we might not have Colby Covington trying to be a heal so hard he tweets about how Thanos gets off the plane and goes back to Ross and we almost definitely wouldn't have Yair Rodriguez getting cut off of one loss because he postured and tried to get a higher ranked but easier fight, and both of those things suck rear end for ~we the viewers~ and yet both of those things are weirdly incentivized currently. Anyway finally got caught up on the card I wont be able to see tonight, lmao Dern.

I mean shouldn't the one basic rule above all else of being a professional fighter be... that you fight when you're given a fight? I mean sure there are obvious ones like don't do drugs, don't get arrested and follow the rules inside the octagon but at a very base level ducking anyone shouldn't be allowed to be a thing. Edit: Like I get what guys are doing by ducking and poo poo but if they don't want to fight whoever is put in front of them, cut them Orange Carlisle fucked around with this message at 17:59 on May 12, 2018 |

I am convinced one of the biggest negative impacts of the Reebok deal is making everyone look the same. Pre-deal guys have this huge persistent branding advantage that comes from in part stupid stuff like "this guy wears big red shorts" and gets their name remembered. New fighters need to go above and beyond to stand out as individuals. The UFC I think chose this approach in part to anonymize fighters and make them the brand rather than the fighters and it's worked too well. Similar but smaller scale, the UFC moving their promo apparatus to shows about Dana white and less hyping of countdown shows about the fighters. The core effort is to make the fighters interchangeable and the management stars. Best Friends fucked around with this message at 18:57 on May 12, 2018 |

UFC had this perfect storm of a TV format that was extremely popular (reality tv gameshow) and dozens of really fascinating idiots who wore shorts with CONDOM DEPOT on their asses, and they've managed to squander all of that away for the opportunity to pay everybody less money in exchange for completely gutting their brand lol

the ufc may not command the kind of periodic, fleeting relevance it had for big fights as it once did, but it now produces like 7000 hours of tv per day that nobody watches but somebody still pays for
