Serious question: Has anyone been accused and then the accusations have been unfounded or the accuser has recanted and said they lied?

Hmm, nobody's lives appear to have been ruined by those false accusations. We're just looking for an example of a false accusation actually ruining a celebs life and coming up empty.

but i understand what you are saying and generally agree with you. false accusations are one of those things that everyone knows a guy who knows a guy who got accused by some woman who had sex with them and regretted it and cried rape and everyone believed her and his life was ruined and that's why #MeToo is terrible even though there are so many more women who suffer in silence after being attacked

He's just adamant that 90% of the accusers are lying and wouldn't even entertain the idea that there's more terrible people with power and fame than we realize. And then he started that whole rant about I KNOW A GUY WHO LOST HIS JOB/LIFE/DOG OVER A WOMAN'S LIES. He made a comment about "there's so many innocent men being crucified in Hollywood" as well. Thankfully this guy isn't a close friend, just a dude I knew from work.

He probably doesn't believe it because he's a man who's never had to deal with it and either doesn't really talk to many women or doesn't know exactly what they have to go through and/or he's a total poo poo head

I'm pretty sure false accusations are a thing, but they tend to be incredibly loving obvious and paid no attention, usually made by crazy and/or extremely stupid people, and/or against the softest possible targets rather than someone with actual power.

I've seen a number of articles about men who have spent time in prison who have their cases overturned when the person who accused them of rape are overheard saying it never happened. I'm sure actual sexual assaults occur on a monumentally higher frequency than false accusations that ruin men's lives, but it does happen.

Didn't Jacko have a bunch of nudie kids magazines in his bedroom, per the politice inventory of neverland ranch? That doesn't prove he diddled kids, but it doesn't exactly instill confidence that the accusations were bogus.

Following his exoneration, Banks sought to resume his football career, playing for the now defunct United Football League (UFL), attending mini-camps for several NFL teams, and later signing with the Atlanta Falcons. but then we got starting qbs in the nfl who definitely sexually assaulted people and never faced a second of punishment for it. something like 2/3 of rapes are never even reported.

If “fake” rape accusations happen with consequences, they’re more likely because the police simply caught the wrong men of color. That’s happened in a few high profile cases, though not with celebrities.

I recall they were more art books with supposedly non-sexual nudes of children among other pics rather than flat out porn, though obviously that's a blurry distinction at best. Still, might point to the theory that Jackson had a warped view of sexuality and physical boundaries from his upbringing, being exposed to sexual favours at a young age from being forced into being a child star. While there's no way to prove it, there are pointers to that he was just legitimately mentally hosed up rather than being a sexual predator. Mostly I find it interesting that despite being one of the first high-profile entertainment sex predators in the news, he really doesn't fit the profile now.

Vegetable posted:If “fake” rape accusations happen with consequences, they’re more likely because the police simply caught the wrong men of color. That’s happened in a few high profile cases, though not with celebrities. It’s worth mentioning that “we have it on good authority that somebody reported a rape” was used as a pretext for lynching and arresting black men and boys throughout the Jim Crow era, some as young as eight. Many of those cases involved an actual reported assault where the real assailant wasn’t caught (or in many cases even sought out) and some poor scapegoat was brought in instead. Or they were covers for assaults committed by powerful white men (or their sons) who would never be brought to justice. Suspects were often tortured or coerced into signing statements prepared for them by police. Other cases involved consensual miscegenation or adultery and were as much about keeping women in line as they were about enforcing racial segregation. And still others didn’t even involve actual crimes at all, and were simply excuses to commit brutality and then immediately swept under the rug. This history often gets brought up as one of many interweaving explanations for why people have been quick to defend certain black celebrities against legitimate accusations of assault or partner violence, notably OJ Simpson. As long as racist policing and police brutality continue to exist and be a political force that directly affects millions of people I think guys like R. Kelly and Chris Brown will benefit from some degree of cover on that front. This is why the organization and campaigning coming from black women and from within the black community recently to hold men like these accountable is so important.

Groovelord Neato posted:for every false accusation there are ~150 sexual assaults. pretty good odds for believing a victim. It's also worth remembering that, of those false accusations, exceedingly few of them involve an accuser who's simply out to extort someone or ruin their lives -- in a lot of cases, there's mental illness involved on the part of false accusers, sometimes to the point they very literally believe they were raped or abused by a certain celebrity. There is absolutely no epidemic of people knowingly making false rape or sexual abuse allegations.

Bryan Singer prior to being dragged into the Weinstein stuff. The lawsuits against him around the time of Days of the Future Past were withdrawn at the accuser's request. He's now got another one against him, so maybe this one will stick.

Yea the whole false accusations thing is especially stupid regarding celebrities and people with power, because as much as there may be an added financial motive, there's ten times more motivation to keep quiet. There's no statement more indicative of male privilege than "If it was so bad why didn't she come forward earlier?" because it exposes the ignorance that most men have about exactly what these women go through when they go public. Especially in the age of the internet, coming forward against a powerful man is like voluntarily giving up any chance at a normal life for the next several years, and that's best case scenario.

One of the NCIS boxsets had a feature that was the cast at a restaurant talking about acting and some such, and there was a bit where Michael Weatherly talked about the pressures of auditions, and I'll always remember with Perette interjected "At least they don't always try to get you to take your shirt off."

Last week someone in my hometown abducted a blind rescue dog and it resulted in death threats and police being called on multiple unrelated innocents.
