That’s likely part of why if you hear “Yanny” it sounds like it’s coming out of the Intellivision speech synth module: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQMOkC2BdRk The high frequencies that make the Yanny sound are recognizable but not natural speech patterns.

I can hear yanny, but only if I drown out the booming, overwhelming voice of the guy clearly saying "laurel" over top. Those who can't hear laurel are loving incomprehensible.

I went to a lot of punk shows without earplugs in my youth and got blasted with an LRAD at a protest as a young adult and I attribute my inability to make any sense of some sort of Laurel-like phenomenon to these two factors

It really depends on your speaker quality. The "Laurel" is really bassy so when I listen just over my phone's speakers I don't hear it unless I'm in a really quiet place, but with my headphones I can hear both clearly

I once ran this experiment at a crowded movie night in a friend's home theater and got some very energetic disagreements.
