As far as I know if you count Uber test vehicles, and Teslas being driven around on autopilot by oblivious idiots, self-driving cars have a far worse safety record than the average human driver. At this point only Waymo have cars that I'd feel at all comfortable stepping in front of in hopes they'll stop. Self-driving car technology is in its infancy. We're seeing the first baby steps of what has the potential to be life changing. Of course theres not a lot of time/distance that has been covered by autonomous vehicles, especially compared to regular cars. Of course they're more dangerous now, because they're still in the testing phase! The point I was trying to make is that people are garbage at driving, they're even worse now that phones are a distraction, and anything that can eventually reduce the number of traffic deaths is a good thing. But obviously we're not there yet.
