So I've finally decided to get around to watching Sailor Moon (both the original series and Crystal) and out of curiosity are any of the movies canon to the original series (that is, actually referenced in the show itself) or can most of them be skipped? In the case of the latter, are any of them worth watching anyway? Same question goes for the Precure movies actually.

Just watch it whenever. The movies make no connections to the series other than whether the Outer sailor scouts are around or not.

drat I didn't even know there were movies, are they on Netflix/hulu/etc? My daughters just finished the first season and are on to R. The final showdown with Queen Beryl was extremely anime, everyone got feels.

They are stand alone except for Heartcatch and Kira Kira which do work into the main series. You should 100% watch at least the Heartcatch, Yes and Maho Girls movies as they are all really good. Heartcatch movie is probably the best anime Rie Matsumoto has directed and Yes does the dark clone plot the best
