Apparently Davy Jones was using a ‘96 Ilmor engine in the 500. Probably because Galles ran it in CART for Lawson/Jones.

Spicy take: Hinch not making it only adds to his own history with the Speedway. If he winds up winning the race in the future, this story — pole, major accident, missing the race — just becomes the sort of legend we love at Indy.

I feel the same way. If he wins one, I think it'd be above even TK's win for emotional value.

Indy loves to generate hard luck stories for drivers who could have / should have won on multiple occasions, but didn't. Lloyd Ruby, Michael Andretti as a driver, TK prior to 2013.

Pretty sure they have been every other year. (and I know you know this since you posted the schedule, but to everyone else reading this) Lights race is on NBC Sports though.

The last three PBP voices, the current color analysts, and two longtime pit reporters for the Indy 500. Even with a couple of them being goobers, that'd be a hell of a table to listen to stories at.

(e- I wonder if Paul Page makes an appearance Sunday because that would own.)

Two drivers who love the camera and the defending winner? Probably a while ago, with the unfortunate after-effect that one of them won't be in the race.

Probably a while ago but with the way hinch has been handling it, it might end up being a good thing. Thrill of victory and agony of defeat and all.

Also not sending ZCD or Wickens to Toronto is... odd.

Though as bad as they hosed coverage of the end of bump day, any moaning they do about not having coverage in the future rings very hollow.

If you assume the driver's themselves do the dirty work on the pranks, you'd be wrong. They have their lackeys (or in some cases spouses) do that work while they're out of town. If you are a 500 starter there is a 0% chance of staying in Indy on this day, so they preplan everything and find people to carry it out while they're gone.

“Of course the Indy 500 is a massive race, on a par with Monaco and F1 and Le Mans. It’s one of the three biggest races. That would be amazing to have done. Whether I will get a chance or not I don’t know but I hope I will get a chance.”

What's the feeling on how the race is going to go? Chevy's got single-car speed but Honda might make up some ground in the draft?

I'm still not 100% convinced that the speed difference was really a Chevy / Honda thing, and not a "Penske and ECR have figured out trimming out the new aerokit better than everyone else" thing. It's not like anyone is going to be that trimmed out during the race, nor will anyone have that much clean track in front of them, and the tow-speeds are damned close.

The Chevies have a little more in the top end, while the Hondas are more tractable. At the end of the straights the Chevrolet cars were faster.

Cygni

I also feel like the Chevies reacted better to the extra boost, which is now gone again. The Honda's have been fast in group practices. I don't think the win will be determined by engine builder at the end of the day, all of the teams are comically struggling with the front end in the draft and I think how you deal with that will be the deciding factor.

Speaking of that, I would not be surprised at all if track position ends up being key all day.

From hearing about it from Racer.com's videos that you'd want to be in the top 5 to not be in completely dead air. Last pit stop is going to be critical.

To be fair, that's the case for just about every 500. 2016 could have been Munoz instead of Rossi if Munoz hadn't been in fuel saving mode and had just run harder earlier knowing they'd have to pit, instead of trying to fuel save and change strategy mid stint.
