What were Conti and Ulissi doing to get docked two minutes each?

Smirr
Jun 28, 2012

It's drafting in all cases. The full list also includes Hermans, Cavagna and Pedersen (30s each). Conti and Ulissi must have been a sight to behold. They used to be next to each other in the GC - maybe they did an impromptu team time trial?

e: I'd bet money that this was the reason, check it out:

They were 2 seconds apart at the first checkpoint

Bora-Hangrohe and UAE Team Emirates have caused a split here. Not sure why as Viviani appears to be safe.

Froome and Dennis in the second group.

E - all back together again. But this has been a bit of a manic start.

God, this stage is a clusterfuck. I'm betting a lot of the team radios are just "we have NO idea who is where, just do whatever you feel like" right now

e: Sanchez is just the best today. He just gave De Marchi a little punch to let him know he's attacking. Meanwhile, German Eurosport are piping in the audio feed from the French Open

Knees actually pleaded with MS to please let Poels go 5 minutes up the road. Everyone slowed down a little before the feed zone, but now they're back to flooring it. Now Viviani almost got run over, twice. This loving stage

HappyCamperGL
May 18, 2014

Poels is only ten minutes down on GC so it's not unreasonable to keep him in check.

Smirr
Jun 28, 2012

"Come on, let him halve his gap" is a bit of an ask, yeah.

The peloton is getting split now

I'm not watching, any chance of the break winning?

Smirr
Jun 28, 2012

Odds are low, I'd say. It's a very high quality breakaway (Hermans, Poels, De Marchi, Sanchez) but the gap keeps going down and LottoNL and Bora don't show any intent of giving up the chase. Quickstep are conspicuously absent, however. Oh wait, Viviani is directly behind the Bora train. Never mind.

e: 23 km to go, and they're starting to sit up so they don't catch them too early. :rip:

There are shades of Nibalis win tho. Completely out of it mid way through the final week and through luck with Kruijswijk and Chaves cracking hard on one stage he won it.

Although given Yates form so far I think he'll take the time back tomorrow in reality.
