No baseball players.

I wonder how much the lack of promotion of players as individuals is tied to the frequency of big trades/free agency in baseball relative to the other big sports (particularly of all-star-class players). Sure, a team could put together a media package and promote the poo poo out of one of their star players as "the face of the franchise" but then things change six months later and now it makes more sense to trade that player, and all they've done is encourage a fan backlash (or best case scenario, waste $$$).

What if Jerome Walton made me a champion?

Niwrad posted:

I agree that it's unlikely but they're going to have to do something with Heyward regardless. He's the 5th or 6th best outfielder on the team and shouldn't be the reason the Cubs can't add a RFer.

I haven't looked at any of this stuff since the whole A-Rod kerfuffle but does the MLBPA have a stance on "Here's a bonus to encourage you to take your contractual opt out since if we have to pay you anyway you're our 5th outfielder now and you're going to spend more time wrangling Joe Maddon's flamingos than on the field?". His first opt-out is after this season but he'd have to be crazy to take it all things considered.

No reason at all aside from playing time. Hopefully that dwindles as the season goes on.

Jose Reyes is trending in New York. It's because he's very bad at baseball. His OPS+ is 3.

When asked if he was going to continue to play Reyes, Mickey Callaway took a roundabout shot at the front office: "I think we have to play the players we have."

The Mets are a garbage barge again. I missed that.

Holland hasn’t lost any real appreciable velocity or anything like that has he? Or was it more a kind of a closer mental/confidence breakdown thing?

I had him on my fantasy team so I actually watched a lot of his appearances but yes his ERA was higher than I remembered it being.

Still I didn't think he had lost it so comprehensively.

An ERA in the 6’s as compared to the 1’s is a bit of a difference, yes. It’s why no one wanted to take a chance on him in the first place.

Out here, everything hurts

The frustrating thing with Holland is that, right now, a ton of media outlets are saying that the problem is that he isn't getting opportunities in high pressure save situations and that's affecting his mentality. Because he's a proven closer and he needs to be in that position to thrive instead of a mop-up guy, etc.

That is absolutely the kind of crap Matheny would buy into. How many losses can be directly attributed to a guy making big money until you cut the line, especially on a one year deal? In this instance, I think about seven. And that's horrible.

Tonight's loss was in no way Holland's fault though. He was quite literally crying and breaking down tonight and Willie McGee had to help pull him together. Something is definitely not all there right now. And it's pretty much confirmed he won't accept an assignment.

Trevor Bauer Wrote "BD 911" On The Mound Before His Start [Update]

Trevor Bauer, the Indians pitcher who loves both funny numbers and casually suggesting conspiracy theories, wrote “BD 911” on the back of the pitching mound before the first pitch of his start against the Cubs. Here’s video of him carving with his cleats in the dirt, then appearing to admire his work.

The meaning of “BD 911” is, of course, ambiguous, but “Bush Did 9/11” is most everybody’s first guess. Bauer will almost definitely be asked about his message after the game, and we’ll update with his answer.

Update (10:58 p.m. ET): Bauer says that he actually wrote “BD 91.1” on the mound, and denies any association with 9/11. He didn’t elaborate on the meaning of the message, but says it’s “a personal thing of importance” to him.

91.1 FM is WRUW, a radio station in Cleveland. On Fridays from 1am to 3am they have a Metal show called Beautiful Dreadnaught. Bauer is apparently a big Metal fan and that probably gives him enough plausible deniability, even though he is a giant memelord.

As much as I hate the guy, that probably isn't even in top 100 bad ball/strike calls this season. Atleast it was on the corner of the zone.
