I fell in love with a Video Nasty

Davros1 posted:

I remember an interview with Emmerich where he complained Toho was difficult to work with, because, and are you ready for this wholly unreasonable request? Toho said Godzilla had to have three rows of spines down his back.

Toho's always been very particular about how Goji looks. Like, his entire run they've been very exacting as to how many toes the suit can have from movie to movie. I suspect this ties in to something I once heard about Chinese dragon lore, where the amount of toes denoting the rank of the dragon. For example only royalty could have statues/clothing/etc with four toed dragons, and five toed denoted a Holy rank above royalty.

I just think it's funny that he changed everything about how Godzilla looks, then bitches because they asked to have three rows of spines.

Exploration is ill-advised.
There was a very 90s and late 80s thing in adaptations where Hollywood seemed to go 'Screw the original kiddy poo poo, we know better' and produce bad to mediocre overhyped dreck with zero self-awareness quite often.

Despite not being 'faithful' to Godzilla, G'98 still has a lot going for it strictly as an aloof giant monster movie. Emmerich might have thought the 'guy in a suit' was corney, but this is the same guy who did Independence Day, he clearly loves B-movies, he just correctly identifies this queer aspect of them where this big threatening Other is a fulcrum for romantice/heterosexual coupling. Like The Lost World, G'98 is basically a romantic comedy.

And when it comes down to it, Emmerich and Devlin's vision is utterly uncompromising in how sympathetic it is towards the monster and how utterly incompetent it makes the civil authorities look. Even compared to the uselessness of the military in most Japanese giant monster movies, in G'98 there's not even of whiff of militarist fanfare. They even rather cleverly expand on the gag that, in Godzilla movies, the military fires lots of weapons but never hit anything - in G'98, we see that convention turned into a punchline, "You 'caused more damage than the god drat thing did!" This may sound kinda minuscule, but you gotta remember that Emmerich is crafting this film from a Western perspective where conventional creature-features have always been cartoonishly jingoistic, where it's not even subtle, where American military exceptionalism is directly conflated with the production of the heterosexual nuclear family. The reference to It Came from Beneath the Sea is extremely telling.

It's not faithful to the letter, but it's faithful to the spirit. The major change that the filmmakers decided was that Godzilla was no longer this apocalyptic juggernaut. It's just a persecuted animal that you can firebomb into oblivion just like any restless human movement. But the filmmakers relish the alternative scenario; of, unlike in Japan, Godzilla never becomes a superhero. Instead, in the context of Americanism, Godzilla needs to remain this pervasive, subversive force.

The problem is that it's still a pretty bad movie with dated jokes, even for the time, dated slang, and overacting out the rear end.

Like it's a big dumb action summer movie and if you can get into that, sure, but otherwise it doesn't have a lot going on with it and it has a very cynical take on Godzilla as a concept and a force just due to who made it.

Also, and this is key, it doesn't have any loving balls. The city destruction is absolutely minimal, as most of New York is fine after the fact, and none of the humor goes beyond snide little jabs. If you're going to have Mayor Ebert, loving DO SOMETHING WITH HIM. Have him get eaten by the babies, have him get shot by the military, have him be corrupt as gently caress- Whatever. Do something with your goddamn setting. But the movie is way too light hearted to be as mean as its cynical nature would like it to be, so it just comes up flaccid. If you have this much contempt for what you're making and the people you're making it about, *USE THAT CONTEMPT*

I will say, the destruction shots we do have, and the practical effects shots of GINO in the film, are really good and hold up to this day. There is no questioning that.

And because the movie IS a romantic comedy, a lot of this is waaaaaay more subjective than normal dumb monster movie stuff goes. Comedy is the ultimate subjective thing so if it works for you, good on you.

The other thing about the movie that is kind of wince inducing is how painfully Pre 9-11 it is. The way people react to buildings being bombed and destroyed in the heart of New York City is...not what they should be. Fast forward a few years and this movie would never have been made the way it was even with the same creative staff.

Mind you it's not just this movie, though it stands out starkly considering how close it was to 2001. You also had Godzilla Attacks New York City Playsets! From Trendmasters! Set up your own New York City and then have fire breath spitting Godzilla stomp through and smash it to pieces!

The one solace is that there wasn't a Twin Towers in that one.

Like there was in the micromaster style Godzilla VS Rodan playset.

Self-awareness, or Emmerich being upset with Ebert's review of Independence Day? Maybe a bit of both.

Godzilla 1998 has a very shaggy, rough draft feel- just like a lot of people have made edits of The Phantom Menace I'd like to kinda trim down G98 and get rid of some of the fat. A lot of the gags do go on a beat or so too long. I like the overall jaunty tone but it could be tighter, and I have a feeling some of this is down to how rushed the whole thing was.

I actually went and bought the very-limited-release CD of David Arnold's full score for the movie, because the music is good, and in the liner notes Arnold indicates that the project shifted a bit at some point- Devlin and Emmerich went in with an Independence Day mindset, give the audience a big scary monster and then kill it off for a big pop, but at some point they turned and made it more sympathetic. This may have worked against them from a populist mindset, audiences didn't really know who to root for like they did in ID4 (and it's less of a spectacle too.)

As shaggy as the picture is there are a lot of things I like about it too, much of that being the monster and its design.

The score definitely rules. So does the soundtrack.

I don't think a fan-edit could really 'fix' G'98, per se. My contention has always been that it should have just been a movie about Frank Azaria and Arabella Field's horrible guido stereotypes.

We-e-e-e-e-e-e-ll, it's better directed than BF, imo, but we're really splitting hairs on the new kitsch canon there, I reckon.

Now, Kong '76, now there's a criminally underrated movie I'll always go to mat for.

In my mind it's literally the same movie, it's just Azaria and Field get into whacky, Godzilla-related antics. Jean Reno is still there and, more importantly, you now just have unalloyed Jean Reno as a straight man playing off My Cousin Vinny as a monster movie. (Although I realize there are really no 'straight men' in Roland Emmerich movies.) (And, no, I did not intend that to be a double entendre.)

King Kong 76 is great. The girl was found at sea after she fell off of an exploding porno shoot boat or something. I'm sure that was the movie trying to get in on the Deep Throat fever a little, which is so weird.

Batman Forever's soundtrack introduced me to Nick Cave; ironically, There Is A Light is the song he hates the most of his entire career and when the band released a 3-disc B-Sides & Rarities album back in 2005, he refused to allow the song to be on there.

Godzilla 98 is for sure a better movie than Batman Forever, but they're both easily trounced by their respective soundtracks.

I watched King Kong 76 recently and agree that it's underrated. The three leads are great and the camera work on the boat and the island is gorgeous.

The line is literally, "Did you ever meet anyone before whose life was saved by Deep Throat?" The joke being that all the other people who died on that boat going up in flames were gathered around watching the porno movie, and she said, "I need to get the gently caress out of this situation," and that's what saved her life.

It rules. She calls Kong a "chauvinistic pig ape."

The best thing going for Kong '76 is its score by John Barry, the movie has my favorite Kong introduction out of the whole franchise thanks to him.

Also, I got a question for the REAL Godzilla nerds in here: is there an updated edition of David Kalat's "A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series" that features reviews of the Millenium films? I see that the book's publisher lists a second edition on their website, but I'm not sure if it's updated or it's just been reprinted.

Would be surprised if anything from Comic-Con gets a public release. My gut says the marketing timeline for this one will broadly echo the one for G14: teaser late this year, trailer in Jan or Feb 2019, and marketing ramps up in April or so with TV spots, etc.
