Pre-sequel has lasers and moon gravity, therefore it is the best. Sure the plot is hot garbage, but so is at least 50% of BL2, so obviously the correct thing to do with Borderlands plots is to ignore them almost entirely.

Seriously, my greatest hope for 3 is that they go as plot-light as Randy Pitchford's ego will allow and maybe even go open world and non-linear, rather then trying for a handholding 'narrative experience'. (My second greatest hope is that they let you skip the interminable tutorial zones and start at level 5 or whatever, with all your equipment slots already unlocked and all the tedious exposition and character introductions out of the way).

Mordja posted:

They very publicly announced that their next Battlefield game wouldn't have gameplay-related microtransactions of any kind during its reveal, with veiled reference to the lootbox scandal and I'm pretty sure Battlefront 2 and the legislative response towards it has them running scared.

That makes more sense, I hadn't seen that particular announcement. Still, Battlefield is actively trying to recoup goodwill after BF2, whereas I don't think anyone, including EA, expects Anthem to sell well enough to earn a sequel or justify Bioware's continued existence, so why not go fishing for whales?

So, this new Fallout thing is some kind of online game? Wasn't Bethesda the studio that was saying just a little while ago how committed they are to single-player? What happened to that?
This has probably been in development since before they said that. The Austin studio working on 76 was formed to make online games. They were originally making a game like Overwatch called Battlecry, but Zenimax/Bethesda wisely pulled the plug on it before Overwatch came out.

Babe Magnet posted:

Bethesda doesn't develop Elder Scrolls Online, they only publish it. ESO is mostly a Zenimax joint.
They are all owned by Zenimax, but you are correct that ESO is made by a different studio that is mainly ex-Mythic (Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online) people than Bethesda 'proper' or whatever you want to call Todd Howard and crew.

Just out of curiosity, what are you basing this on? EA specifically said, earlier this month, that they’re going to continue putting loot boxes in their games, so I’m not sure why you would think this?
Non-gameplay ones just means it will be cosmetics only like overwatch I guess.

What is Popcap Games even working on at this point? I mean Plants vs Zombies 2 was a mobile only F2P poo poo show that pretty much destroyed what the first game did but outside of the garden warfare games and Peggle 2 I haven’t heard anything more about them. Are they another EA victim in a ditch?

The big issue with Popcap is that pre-EA, they had become a mid-tier publisher of indie games as well, and it looks like the EA deal put a screeching halt to that, to the point that you realize how little their in-house team actually did*. The company's webpage only lists 5 series now: Peggle, PvZ, Zuma, Bejeweled, and Bookworm... and then you look and realize they're either due for a new wave of games, or completely dead, because all their post-EA stuff came in two waves, one in 2014, and one in 2016.

Anyway I've spent way too much time on this because I tried tracking down who did some of the smaller games they used to do that are now fuckin' dead and that sucked.

* I presume? I legitimately have no idea why you would not list your products as part of your catalog, but a not-tiny amount of these are still on sale on Steam, so...

It's not like everyone doesn't already know that if EA buys a company it's essentially a death knell for any quality games that company may, or may not have, previously made.

Like good on you if you get a cash buyout from EA for your company, and that's what you want, but everyone loving knows that company isn't going to produce anything of value that the brand was previously known for without 50 layers of EA poo poo on top of it.

Look, just because they've got a thirty year history of acquiring developers and then destroying them doesn't mean that the next time that EA acquires a company that they'll destroy it.

I had fun with inquisition. Not a masterpiece but I could overlook the bloat. Definitely had an issue of the writers and the level designers not exactly knowing what the other was doing, considering the amount of "fetch 10 bear pelts" style quests dotted around the large maps.
