Hey, I’m sure this gets asked in this thread all the time, but I checked the OP and there was nothing there. I’m thinking of giving the old video essayist game a go - can anyone recommend any guides or advice on how to go about that? Mainly the technical side of it, though any help would be appreciated.

Solochat in spoilers: From a few pages back but what are folks reactions to RLM's take on L6 from Solo? I actually winced when the phrase 'Social Justice Droid' popped up. I think I do agree with their assessment that she is meant to be a comedy character/parody of a equality activist - but I don't think the joke comes off as mean-spirited. She's prolly my fave new character and far from the 'Worst Star Wars Character Ever' as Jay (IIRC) put it. I think the ability to laugh at yourself is pretty crucial and L6 covers that. Funnily enough I don't think this has ever been asked in this thread. Er well some people in thread have recommended editing software in the past, and the thread consensus is that gimmicks suck and are distracting, you don't have to chase after pop culture zeitgeist so long as your subject is a genuine passion for you then issue can be ironed out with time and practice. You don't have to show your face if you don't want to, being comfortable with your own style is also important.

The consensus from people who have done it and posted about it is to just find something you're passionate about and do videos until you get a feel for how you want them to be, and that you should especially not worry about being awful for a long time while you work it out. The other thing is that it's purely something you do for fun or personal satisfaction in terms of any possible income--nobody makes any money from it other than a few in relatively special circumstances that can't be replicated any longer. And any niche that develops moving forward will probably be filled instantly by Fine Bros.-style soulless vampires from business school.

It makes me feel really good that the alt-right playbook series seems less and less relevant to my daily life every time the next one comes out. I was scared shitless when the first video came out and now the threat seems positively quaint. The series is still extremely valuable because so many people use rhetoric like that in their daily lives, though.

It's similar to their Ghostbusters review. They don't say anything truly objectionable or factually wrong, you just get this sense of "for gently caress's sake, what is productive about dwelling on this? Please talk about something else" while watching. It's also evident in the tone taken when discussing Black Panther, a film they like. They focus on the fact that social issues are being co-opted to market movies, which is a valid point, but they always do it in a way that feels smug as gently caress towards people who enjoy it (who they assume are totally unaware it is only being featured to make money for a corporation). It's not out of step with the cynicism they show towards everything else, though. Though Jay said it was the worst character since Jar-Jar, not the worst ever.

I mean ffs Battlefield spent a long stretch of time being an absurd Tom Clancy wet dream about a non-nuclear WW3 and it’s always been an arcadey non-realistic shooter. If you want to cry realism then go play Arma or Red Orchestra. It’s super telling that people will accept ridiculous James Bond/Tom Clancy garbage and various abstractions for the sake of gameplay but one lady in a strange costume is a bridge too far.
