Its what I hope for when I walk into every venue. Little to no phones going up, no drunk/high people smashing into everyone, and everyone just being chill.

I traveled to Chicago for Kill Hannah's final shows (a band I am a little embarrassed I like, but that was such a blast), and goddamn, the Metro is a loving nice venue. Having to paying for water sucks, but I stood in the very back of that venue, and I could see everything on stage. Incredible sight lines. The waiters that take and balance orders to folks in the middle of the floor is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen, too. I was dreaming of the Metro's drink service while sticking it out at the front of the crowd before Alvvays' set at the 9:30 Club.

Please tell us how the aftershow is!

Since apparently my gimmick is only ever talking about New Zealand music, I'm here to recommend the everyone I saw performing during NZ Music Month.

Nicole Andrews, who sounds kind of like a more electronicky Tori Amos or Bjork (and when she played Auckland she was supported by Emily Riordan, who I really love and wish there was more of her music online, though she at least has some cool live stuff on Soundcloud).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE9ZfiG4Y1E

Next up was French For Rabbits, who are really great dreamy folk, who became a bit more well known when they opened for Lorde at her Christchurch show earlier in the year. I saw them in a tiny recording studio with about 20 other people, and it was a rad experience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA5VKdE9u2M

(Opening for French For Rabbits was the singular Finn Johannson, who has a ridiculous and impressive mustache, is one of the hardest working guitarists in Wellington, and sounds somehow exactly like you'd expect him to)

Finally there's Emily Fairlight, whose new album is a strong contender for one of my favourites of the year so far. It's gloomy and haunting and somehow a lot more upbeat than I expected, and again shows off NZ's ridiculously strong indie-folk scene.

uh, the new Presets is really really good on a first listen. Nothing really against Pacifica but this is the followup to Apocolypso I've been waiting for for a decade.

Now if they would just sell the vinyl in north america I could give them my money but I'm not paying 100 bucks to import it from AUS thanks.

Just be glad they actually tour in the US. I don't think they've been to the UK for 10 years... I really loved Pacifica but am enjoying this album as well. The opener is pretty nuts.

The piano in Ghost of You Lingers makes me uneasy :(

I came a bit late to Spoon, like 2007 maybe, so GaX5, Gimme Fiction and Kill the Moonlight all kinda blend together to me, which is fine because they're all stellar.

For fans of the almost-twee movement that's been going around (Hoops, TOPS, Sales), I stumbled across this great new album from genteel Chicago rockers Varsity, Parallel Person. They had a big hit with "So Sad, So Sad" a couple of years ago, but I think people are overlooking this album. To describe it, I hear clear vocals, bittersweet, sort of wistful lyrics, crisp production, and an at times upbeat, other times moody jangle. I've had it on a loop since yesterday. And here's a really nice review someone took more time to write.

And I love this album cover:

Here are links to the record on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Youtube. Hope someone likes it!
