The Malaria Coast

Rumors of a gold strike drift through the empire. A far off portion of the Borderlands, marked on maps as "The Malaria Coast". While most people only sigh and hope for that kind of luck to strike their home, for some, the lure of easy gold is too much to resist. A band of emigrants and fortune-seekers heads south from the empire. Led by the intrepid caravan master Kasper Wike, the caravan crosses 300 miles of bad terrain in about a month of travelling. It is not an easy journey; one of the scouts disappears without a trace while crossing the beastmen infested woods, and a week ago, two men were swept away while fording a treacherous flood. Finally, one night, the caravan master calls the group together as you are bedding down for the night in a small vale.

"Reckon we'll be at Greasy Diggings late tomorrow. Some fine water there, so drink up." He taps one of the water barrels with a stick. It makes a disconcertingly hollow sound. "It ain't what you might call a good town, so stay together. Got some mines there, iron and tin. No gold, I hear that's further east. If'n it exists, of course, I ain't seen any thing that glitters, save for what you lot paid me."

At the moment, the caravan consists of seven ragged adventurers, the caravan master and the two surviving scouts, a merchant, leading a pack train of mules, his two guards and his daughter. Fourteen lonely souls in the wilderness. The caravan master assigns watches to everyone, taking the last watch for himself and the two scouts, as is his custom. So they can get an early start with scouting the path for the next day. That night, Mannslieb is waxing gibbous in the sky, while Morrslieb, a sickly green slash of a grin, peaks over the southern horizon. An ill omen, or a fair one?

The next morning, to your surprise, nobody shakes you awake at first light. Everyone rises at the dawn anyway, and you immediately notice that the caravan master and his two scouts are missing. Where have they gone, asks the merchant. Does it matter? responds one the guards, hurriedly buckling up his armor. A few moments later you hear the sounds of marching feet. At the crest of the hill, a number of figures appear. A man on a horse looks down at you.

"I see that the new slaves that the Big Boss ordered have arrived! Lay down your weapons and surrender, and the Big Boss will treat you well! Resist and you'll taste the lash before you start working!" He swings a bullwhip. The sound of the crack echoes across the vale. His men have drawn stout cudgels and are holding nets. They begin to walk down the hill, while a few bowmen peer down.

Jakob Surrety, Halfling Militiaman

The halfling militiaman Jakob Surrety woke with a start, a sunken, twisted feeling gripping him in the pit of his stomach. Instinctively, he knew that something was off-kilter in the campground - for one thing, the smell of breakfast wasn't in the air! Jakob got himself armed and armored in his leathers even as the other members of his traveling party were still rousing from their slumber.

When he heard the sound of a set of hooves and armed men closing in, Jakob hissed out a dire warning to the rest of the camp from between his teeth. "Time to look lively, folks - we've got company coming!"

By the time the slavers' mounted leader had crested atop the overlooking hill, everyone in the traveling camp was alert, awake, and had armed themselves as best they could. The man on horseback spoke:

Man on Horseback posted:

"I see that the new slaves that the Big Boss ordered have arrived! Lay down your weapons and surrender, and the Big Boss will treat you well! Resist and you'll taste the lash before you start working!"
The man on horseback swung his bullwhip, its cracking sound echoing across the vale. All at once the slavers' men started approaching downhill.

"They've got archers! Quick - get behind cover!" Jakob ushered the other halflings in the traveling party to fall behind him as he pulled a round, polished stone from his pouch.

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

Alice responds to the declaration of the raiders with a wagging finger and the beginning of a tedious explanation as to why they are wrong:

"Actually slavery has been illegal since the Convention of Nuln in 2312 outlawed all forms of non-recompensed indentured labor among humans, dwarves and halflings. Elves would have been included, but, haha, the drafters of the document presumed that no-one would bother to try and get any work out of an elf. Most Imperial states already banned the practice before then, but-"

But stops as Jakob pushes her into cover. It's clear the rough men approaching have no intention of adhering to the Nuln convention. Following Halfling instincts she scurries into cover, casts around for stones to throw, and waits for the men to close to within range.

Occupy the cover next to Jakob, acquire Improvised Ranged Weapon reload crossbow!

"Cover! Cover!" Jarla shouts, echoing the halfling to her right. She stays in position for a moment longer and holds her crossbow steady, getting a bead on the horseman. Piss him off. Show him up. Maybe even throw him from the horse.

Leaning into the shot, she fired before moveing quickly towards the rocky outcrop. "Dammit!" It missed, she moved too early. She arrived next to the weaonless Alice. Jarla dropped her crossbow and ammo pouch unceremoniously on the cround at the tiny lawyer's feet, reaching for her bolas.

"Alice. Reload. Shoot."

Cerzi Foecleaver

Cerzi looks at the man with the whip like one might a particularly dim pup, all incredulous disbelief and the haunting suspicion that this might be some cosmic joke at her expense. She bangs her sword and shield together to draw his attention, saying, "Ey! Narwangli on the horse! Yer big boss better hope I don't introduce Kolrakizank here to his arse!"

With the speed of dwarven determination, she heads behind the cover with the tiny manlings, swapping her sword out for her crossbow and loosing a bolt at the whip-wielding git. The bolt flies true, slamming into his right arm. She doubts it did much more than sting his pride, but it should be enough to give him second thoughts... or draw him in closer.

Waking with a start due to the shouting from his deep, alcohol-induced slumber, Urist blinks several times before he gets his bearings. "Who're these wattocks?" The dwarf blearily pats around the ground until his stubby fingers close around the handle of his battered crossbow, and he swings it around and looses a quarrel towards the newcomers on the hill. A poster to surpass Bifauxnen!
Hepador LaLoche

They hadn't even arrived in town yet and already, things weren't going according to plan. Hepador had signed up for the rumors of gold, the chance to make his own destiny in an uncharted realm. All he'd seen so far was merciless badlands and a lot of loose dust. He should have been angry. He should have felt cheated. And yet, for reasons he couldn't identify or hope to understand, he felt alive. Really, truly, alive. There was something indescribably charming about the absence of civilization, the bleakness of the horizon, the roughness of his woolen sleeping bag. All those years climbing the ladder of privilege seemed so distant now. After only one month's journey into Malaria Coast, he could already feel in his marrow, this was where he belonged. This was the land of promise.

The sounds of combat echoed around him and the pampered Halfling from one month ago smiled more broadly than he had in decades. He jumped out of his sleeping bag in a single fluid motion, kicking the linens off his feet as he stumbled toward his companion. Jakob and Alice had taken cover behind a cropping of rough hewn rocks. He knew them the best of the caravan company so far; in the manner of Halflings they had bonded over quite a few more meals then their human companions seemed to deem necessary. If his life was at risk, somehow he felt safer in the company of his kinfolk. He bustled toward them rather inelegantly, still naked from the waist up, hair quite a mess, smiling and shouting like a man possessed. But the fighting had begun long before his nap had ended, he would need to trust his posse to take up the front lines for the moment.

"Natives!?" He bellowed at his caravan mates. "Slavers!" He heard someone shout back. Hepador roared laughter. "Wild West Indeed!"

Hepador pulled his sling from his pants pocket and took aim. "The Horsemen!" He called to no one in particular. "They're Larger Targets!" With a satisfying thwat he loosed his ammunition on the outlaws and their savage steeds. He tried to watch the stone's arch to see where landed, but with all the excitement he found himself instead staring at his caravan mates, resplendent in dusty armor, a look like steel in their eyes, the fires of life burning brightly amongst his warband. It was beautiful and overwhelming.

"... I LOVE YOU GUYS!!"

Hepador didn't have time to put on his leather armor, to try to mount his goat, or to successful get behind cover. So he's standing mostly in the open trying to pelt the horses with stones in the hopes they'll spook and throw off a rider.

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Karina

"Bloody hell! Get down!"

Karina had been in the process of trying to earn a little more cash by playing her lute for the caravan, only to be interrupted by party crashers. Well, poo poo. This day was about to go all to hell. Thankfully she's got a good arm and good aim, and there's no shortage of rocks and crap to throw if she runs out of arrows. Hustling to cover, a big rock or crate, whatever, she takes aim with her bow and tries to take out one of the other archers before they start raining down arrows of their own.

The man on the horse laughs as the crossbow bolt thuds off his armor. He stops laughing when the sling stone hits the horse's side. The horse rears, and he spends some time bringing it under control. "Big Boss will enjoy breaking you!" he shouts down. "The little men will do well in the deep tunnels, leading the children!"

The bowmen advance across the crest of the hill, launching a spread of arrows at long range. Fortunately for Alice and Karina, the arrows rattle off the chest-high rocks. The other arrows sail harmlessly over their target's heads. The rest of the bandits ready their nets and run down the hill, one of them clutching his arm after Jakob's stone cracks into it.

The ex-soldier, Ladwich Rumpff, shouts "You'll never take me alive, ye bastards!" and charges the nearest slaver. A little groggy, though, the huge weapon glances off the man's armor. From behind him, the hunter, Johann Fridingen, rolls into cover behind a rock and fires an arrow at one of the running slavers, missing badly. The merchant, Balderico Marsala, and his daugher, Renata Marsala, farther behind, pick up their crossbows and aim and shoot at oncoming slavers. Balderico misses badly as well, cursing as he catches a finger on the snapping string. Renata, on the other hand hits one of the oncoming men in the head. He keeps coming, blood streaming down his face from the nasty wound.

The bowmen are at long range. Being behind a rock will protect your body and legs from arrow fire. The other mooks run closer, and appear to be preparing to start netting people! If you close to melee, they won't be able to. Two are wounded. drat, that was some bad luck from Mr. Rumpff's Greatsword.

Alice braces against the rock and finishes hauling back the string on this outlandishly huge human crossbow, drops a bolt in, then peeks round the corner at the oncoming slavers. With an undignified squeak she sweeps the crossbow up and lets fly - nailing the human's foot to the floor as her release is just a little early. She punches the air in victory before regaining her composure and getting back behind the rock.

FYI: You guys can just tell me what you want to do, you don't need to move the icons around. It's just to give you an idea of the battlefield and stuff looks like. I will play around with Roll20 a little bit when I have some free time, and if it makes sense, we can switch there. But for now, feel free just to say, "I do XYZ" and not mess with the Paint map.

Hepador called back to the man on horseback, readying another stone in his sling. "Children!? You daft bastards have child slaves working in mines!?"

A crossbow bolt flew through the air and made satisfying impact against one of the net wielding slavers, who fell dead. It was exactly enough to remind Hepador that he wasn't wearing any armor and was still standing in the open. He wanted very much to fire again at the horseman, but prudence would serve him better. He dove behind the rocky outcropping, joining his halfling companions in cover. He saw Jakob loose a stone on one of the net wielding slavers charging toward their encampment and Hepador promptly followed suit, firing a second stone on the now lone slaver. A satisfying hit! The man recoiled blearily.

"Hey Horseman!" Hepador shouted from behind cover. "Your fearsome soldiers might be just good enough to capture untrained children, but I'm afraid they're quite a few notches below our aptitude!" He roared laughter and patted Jakob on his shoulder as the Halfling drew his sword. "On the other hand, if you want us to go to your mine... All you had to do was ask! It would be my personal pleasure to come teach the rest of your men a very stern lesson about kidnapping!"

When Jakob drew his sword, Hepador patted him heartily on the shoulder. An encouraging gesture, to say the least.

Alice had all but killed Jakob's earlier mark with a crossbow quarrel to the man's thigh, and both Jakob and Hepador had slung stones at the second slaver bearing a net, both scoring hits. Meanwhile Jarla the bounty hunter had drawn her weapon and charged off towards another group of slavers approaching from the other side of the rocks.

No humans or dwarves present to save him here. It was time for Jakob to step forward and protect his kinsmen.

Jacob growled through gritted teeth. "We're not yer ruddy playthings, y'hear?"

Alice's bolt hits the slaver in the leg! He looks down, dumbly at it, before collapsing as he bleeds out. Jakob's sling hits his target in the arm, and he howls in pain. Hepador's stone is not quite so well aimed, and glances off the man's armor. The dwarves (and Jarla) charge the incoming enemy, drawing their weapons, ready to bring the battle to the enemy!
The two northern archers fire at the halflings sheltering behind the rocks. One arrow cracks as it hits the rock in front of Hepador, while the other goes wide. The southern pair fires at Karina, but their shots go high as well. The man on the horse curses at them. "Get closer, you daft fools! Else you won't overcome that long range penalty to shooting!"
Along the line, the slavers draw their clubs and attempt to club their foes into submission. Jakob and Cerzi shrug off the enemy's blows, but Jarla is caught with a ringing blow to the head!
Ladwich duels with his two foes without much success, and Johann lets an arrow fly at a bowman, but misses completely. The two merchants reload their crossbows as quickly as their untrained hands can move.

Jarla needs to make a toughness test at 44% to avoid being stunned!

Jakob Surrety, Halfling Militiaman

With his shield held high, Jakob threw off the man's overhand club swing with eased practice. Okay! So far so good - he'd seen that attack coming and deflected it properly. This was going just just like that one sparring match he'd had when the drill sergeant brought several full-grown men into the Moot with a protective suits of padded armor for the militia to train with. Fighting an enemy that was forced to strike downward had its advantages, especially if you knew how to dodge the attack angles they typically used.

The other part was tougher, and that was getting in close enough to hit after evading a blow. Jakob took a moment to focus on his training...

Jakob takes aim and swings his sword at the Slaver Mook!: 1d100 71 - Miss!

Hepador LaLoche

Time slowed. Long seconds passed patiently into a void of time that seemed to only be occupied by Hepador, watching Jakob race toward the net slaver. He watched the Halfling warrior pull his sword, deftly side step the swing of a club, round for his counter strike ... and miss. How much time passed after, Hepador couldn't say. The moment could have been hours long, but it left in the space of a single breathe.

"Nothing goes according to plan around here." he said quietly to himself.

"Hep, help Jakob bring that bugger down! I'll take this shot then we can go bail out the bounty hunter." Alice shouted in Halfling, waking Hepador from his stupor. He looked at her, a fire burning in her eyes, fists clenched tightly around a ludicrously oversized human crossbow. There was determination painted on every inch of her. Hepador looked back at himself, still bare-chested, a cheap dagger hanging ineffectually on his hip. The sounds of crossbows rang from behind the rock outcropping, speaking volumes of the danger they were challenging.

"... Really?" He called back. Alice locked eyes with him incredulously. Hepador shrugged. "... Alright."

He pocketed his sling and drew his dagger, running from behind the safety of cover before he could convince himself not to. The net slaver was returning to range with Jakob, eyes locked on his comrade in a most unpleasant fashion. Fortunately, he hadn't seemed to notice the second halfing advancing quickly on his flank. hepador had never really been in a fight, unless you count fending off the drunks of the capital after hours. He'd never had to pull a knife on another living talking creature. let alone one that towered over him as this violent human did. But, desperate times call for desperate measures and he would be damned if the slavers would take a single one of his friends. Gigantic or not, all creatures have calves. How hard could it be?

Hepador dove at the net slaver with his dagger ready. He had the clever notion that he'd cut him from the knee to the ankle, take him down to Jakob's level and let the soldier finish the job. He could only hope to be quick enough.

He rolled back onto his feet and saw the blood drip from the edge of his dagger. He made eye contact with Jakob, and smiled blearily. "You know I've got your back!" He said in common, catching his breathe and wiping his brow. He let out a large sigh of relief and called out in Halfling to his comrades "The meats out of the pot! Time to put the crust on it!"

Hepador moves to the slaver and slices his leg with a dagger.

At the north end of the battlefield, Jarla is hard-pressed by the slavers. Although she turns to parry a vicious jab, the other slaver comes at her with a ringing blow to the head! Meanwhile, the two archers run down the hill, attempting to take up a flanking position to get clear shots at the halfling sheltering behind the rock. Alice's crossbow is now reloaded, but at least one of the archers has a clear shot at her.

Hepador and Jakob tangle with the surviving slaver near them. Hepador gets in a vicious cut, and the man is unable to respond. With his comrade fallen, and himself wounded by stone and blade, the two halfings smell fear radiate out from him like garlic from a Sylvanian stew.

While Cerzi presses the injured man severely, Urist's telling axeblow nearly severs the man's arm, and he falls. He will never more be mining karag, unless Morr allow it to be so. His comrade lets out a shriek of anger, and launches an all-out attack on Urist, striking him in the left arm. The man is clearly no longer trying to take prisoners.

In the south, Karina's shot goes wide, as does the hunter's. Ladwich struggles desperately with his foes, while the two merchants fire their crossbows. Renata scores a hit on one of the approaching bowmen.

Jakob Surrety, Halfling Militiaman

Jakob winced as Hepador withdrew his bloody kitchen knife from the man's leg. The stabbed would-be slaver bellowed in rage and agony and lashed blindly at them both with his club. Wild panic set in behind the man's eyes, and Jakob knew that it was time to keep pressing the enemy.

Without taking his eyes off the slaver's movements, Jakob blurted out in rapid-fire Halfling, "Hepador y'kettle-head! What're y'thinking? I was gonna step back n' give Alice a clean shot-"

He swung his sword at the slaver mook, trying to keep the vile criminal's attention.

Jakob swings his sword at the Slaver Mook!: 1d100 84 - Miss!

"Crud-crackers." Jakob spat flatly, as some movement caught the corner of his eye. The bounty hunter Jarla was caught in a scuffle against two slavers all on her own, it did not look like it was going well for her at all. Furthermore, the enemy's archers had been on the move. In Reikspiel, Jakob called out across the clamor of fighting: "Watch the archers!"

Jakob delays until he sees what Jarla is doing!

Wounds 8 / 8 | Fate 2 / 3

Alice looks up from dropping a bolt in the groove on her bow to see the archers flanking her cover. She takes her time with this shot, breathing, squeezing the firing lever rather than jerking it, and it pays off. The bolt flies straight and true, punching into the cheek of the bandit. He might not be dead, but he's not happy!

"That one had some mustard on it, you creamy nonce!"

Rather than stick around to get perforated by return fire she puts some extra effort in and scurries around the rock to join Hepador in menacing the legs of the wavering slaver.

Urist Uristson CCCLXXXVII

"So much for dwarfen solidarity!" Urist chides as Cerzi charges off to the aid of a manling. Half a second later he ducks a wild swing from the human still standing. The manling is none too pleased to see his companion crippled for life.

"Bah! Aye'm juss fine on me own!" He says as the companion of the slaver Urist just downed swings at him. The slaver's club barely manages to smack into the meat of Urist's arm. "Fack!" The dwarf curses in reikspiel.

"Settle down, manling, I've more than enough fer you too! The runebearer growls. The dwarf swings his axe wide to ward off the human. Urist needs to keep the human at bay, but also focused on him. "Come at me if yer 'ard enough!" He challenges.

Hepador LaLoche

The slaver was, inexplicably, still living. Hepador had rather hoped he could cripple the fellow and make that his full contribution. But Jakob had swung. Alice had shot. No one else was coming. The deed of finishing this violent human fell to him. It wasn't a job he'd have volunteered for, but it wasn't a responsibility he had any intention of shirking. These humans had started this fight. These human had struck at his friends. They were collecting slaves, including children. The world wouldn't miss them. And any hesitation Hepador showed now, he knew it wouldn't be shared by any of the mooks harassing his caravan. It was the wild west. If he didn't strike first, he would be struck. And now of all times, that just wasn't an option.

Hepador swallowed his pride like a bitter pill, turning to face the slaver. It was a hell of a day to forget his jerkin. A hell of a day to leave his hatchet in his sleeping ruck. The Slaver was limping but approaching determinedly, club at the ready. Hepador's little knife wouldn't be enough, the human enjoyed a longer range than Hep and a wounded leg wouldn't reduce the severity of his arm. The Halfling needed something more visceral, something that would finish the job. His eyes settled on the other club, discarded by the fallen slaver lying on the ground beside Hepador. He stooped and grabbed the wooden implement, heavy, firm, designed for a purpose. The slaver wouldn't need it anymore. But on the edge of the world, in the tumult of the wild west, Hepador certainly would.

He straightened up, planted his feet firm and gripped the club in both hands. "Last chance to stand down little finch!" He called to the slaver. The man stood tall and spat blood at Hepador. It was enough of an answer.

"Fine. Have it your way."

The men standing over Jarla reach for their nets to tie her up, but then see Jakob barrelling towards them. "This one's running ta join the miners," one of them grins, as they heft their clubs. Still, Jakob deftly avoids their attempts to club him into submission. Alice fires her crossbow at one of the oncoming bowmen, scoring a solid hit. Then she charges the injured slaver, ready to teach him the price of defying the Convention of Nuln. Seeing Hepador and Alice approach with murder in their eyes, the slaver backs away cautiously out of reach, before running for cover behind a rock.
The two northern archers let fly at Karina, now that Alice is behind cover. One arrow is a clear miss, but another lands an inch from her leg. Perhaps if they had been in closer range... Karina carefully aims her bow at her target in response.
Urist spars with his foe, to little effect. Now that the odds are even Urist find it hard to find an opening.
Cerzi rushes to Ladwich's aid. Although this makes the odds somewhat better for him, one of the brigands lands a solid hit on Ladwich's head. The other archers fire at the merchant with the crossbow. One of their arrows finds their mark, sinking into the man's left leg. He yells in pain, forgetting his crossbow. His daughter rushes over to his aid as well.
Ladwich reels back from the solid blow, and is unable to answer. Johann, on the other hand, lets out a whoop as the injured bowman falls with an arrow protruding from an eye.
The man on horseback bellows down at the fleeing slaver, "Stand and fight, maggot! Or you'll be in the mines with this lot!"

Jarla is stunned for two rounds. Fortunately, Jakob is there to save her. Badly wounded enemies will take morale checks, and if they fail, they are going to flee. They prefer to fight people who don't fight back, after all.

With a particularly vigorous yawp, Cerzi feints with a stab to the man's body, then viciously swipes down at the slaver's left leg. It's a small miracle it doesn't come right off, so powerful is her strike. As the man slumps from the strike, even if only for a moment, Cerzi takes the opportunity to spit in his face and say, "Come now, ungi, where's your fire? Wounds 8 / 8 | Fortune 1 / 3

As the injured man retreats Alice tries to swipe at him with the butt of the crossbow but he's too careful. Keeping her head rather than chasing him down she moves up to join Jakob, drawing her sword (a cheap mass produced thing, purchased as a fashion item when she was a clerk in Talabheim) and transferring the bow to her offhand. It drags in the dust a little, but hopefully Jarla will forgive her. She makes a strike at the slaver, more to tie up his attention than in hope of actually hurting him:
