John Murdoch posted:The vibe I got was that since the community was much, much smaller the couple of cliques that developed actually had some sway (plus it was older, shittier SA) so you had a lot of pointless bullshit being slung between people or ganging up on people over video quality. Once that old guard grew up, chilled out, or otherwise moved on there was some breathing room. And not to say there wasn't some self-awareness there, since a lot of that old guard participated in the throwback '07 LP thread which I think heralded the move towards a more chill subforum. It's a lot less ego-driven than it used to be too. There aren't any real singular "big" LPers anymore with fervently loyal audiences. There's no slowbeefs and Diabeetus'es and Freelance Astronauts anymore. It's more cosmopolitan with lots of smaller and mid-level people who collaborate with each other and cross pollinate a lot more than you used to see in the 06 era. Someone could do a gangbusters popular LP and follow it up with a thread that barely cracks 40 posts by the time the LP itself is done, or pull the inverse and go from a 10 post LP to one that goes gold by the third update. Because a lot of LPers these days are also LP watchers, people in the sub tend to be supportive of each others projects and look out for one another however they can. Not always, but quite often in my experience at least. Max Wilco posted:Between Retsupurae and the rules of the LP subforum (which I imagine are still largely the same), my takeaway was that there was a certain standard of quality that had to be met if you were going to post an LP. Titling of videos, structure of videos, clear and concise commentary, editing out failures or waiting time; it was sort of the anti-thesis of YouTube. Anything low effort got drummed out or discouraged. Perhaps it's not as strict anymore (it's been a while since I've been dropped into the subforum), but I took it as a type of curation. We've become functionally more flexible in that regard, if not nominally. Facecam LPs, garbage audio and video, and just flat out awful commentary and presentation are still verboten and sledgehammered on sight for obvious reasons (LordKat, of all people, Sandcastled an LP of his and when he was asked to maybe tone down his hollow tryhard edgelord style and flippant rape jokes he had an amazing meltdown and fled the forums), but if someone shows a genuine interest in learning how to "properly" LP something and improve their craft, we're much less hostile and elitist, I find, than we were even in the 2012's era of LPing. Actually, we're kind of long overdue for another first-post faceplant LP from an up and coming YouTube Superstar. Even to this day, those ones tend to be fair game for people to come out of the woodwork and rizz the poo poo out of though.

Max Wilco posted:Also, this may sound strange, but back when I first watched those old Retsupuraes, I saw a bit of myself in the some of doofuses they riffed on, and it was sort of eye-opening to me in regards to how you should act. I don't know if that makes any sense. Basically, it boiled down to 'don't be like this, unless you want to embarrass yourself.' That doesn't sound strange to me. There was definitely a narrow space wherein people who got Retsupurae'd took it in stride and could laugh at themselves or particularly nasty folks got called out and rightfully mocked. It probably did ultimately help bump up the average quality of LPs a tiny bit. The problem was that outside of that space what you essentially had were some of the people who literally invented the medium making GBS threads on completely clueless newbies - often literal children, people with autism, or people too young or poor to afford comparatively elaborate recording set-ups - in what was a totally brand new internet thing. A brand new internet thing where a lot of the secret protocols and knowledge were locked behind a paywall to boot. No duh these people would have no idea how to record a proper LP. No duh they wouldn't know what a capture card even was and would just point a camcorder at the TV and hope for the best. No duh a nerdy 12 year old who just really likes Pokemon has no idea how to be an internet personality. Sure, a few of the worst cases could be object examples of what not to do, but after a certain point it would be like MST3k snarking over someone's old home movies. I feel like it's not a coincidence that Retsupurae found its resurgence in making fun of bad or bonkers old games that people were actually expected to pay money for, made by people who ostensibly knew what they were doing and not overeager amateurs. FoldableHuman posted:Assuming you have the standard "as little as I can get away with" budget, the Blue Yeti is actually a pretty good intersection of quality and price since there's so many on the second hand market. It's not amazing (which is why there's so many on the second hand market) but it's good enough, and it's super popular so there's a million and one tutorials out there on just about any problem or quirk that could ever crop up with one. Better setups don't really start to pay off until you're in the $300 range because you need both a good mic and a good interface. (The Yeti is basically a decent mic and a mediocre interface.) For the overwhelming majority of people starting out issues like room noise and mic technique are going to make a far greater impact on quality than the hardware limitations of the Yeti. Hey, thanks so much for this, I really appreciate it (and thanks to the others who chimed in too). I assume you actually are Dan Olson and not just a weird fan of his who used his branding for an SA account and also happens to know a lot about video essay production - I’m a big fan of your videos (just watched the 50 Shades and Book Club ones the other day), and it’s great to get advice from someone who’s work you admire. What helped DeceasedCrab was that nowadays people are a bit more earnest about stuff they dig so you don't have as much whining about his "constant La-Mulana vids" when people poo poo out 30 to 40 hours of stream VODs A WEEK playing the exact same game, rambling over it, and getting cheered on for it. Him posting a 10 minute video twice a week seems quaint compared to let's say, NorthernLion series. yea Retsuprae was funny but when you took away the jokes it was mostly just 'you're awkward and/or bad at a video game? ARE YOU RETARDED?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU YOU loving MORON?!' and I can kinda see why they'd want to step back from that being their online brand. I like that most of them are just kinda normal rear end LPers who are funny now, they're still nice and entertaining without having to style their brand around 'hey gently caress this guy am I right?' Chip and Ironicus did a few really good ones way back making fun of poo poo like old gaming commercials/gamestop training vids that were fantastic.

It's interesting to see the dynamic of people too horrible for the premier platform in an online space (livestreaming) moving to less-popular me-too sites with less-strict rules in that space is playing out between Twitch and Youtube which puts Youtube in the opposite of their usual position. I know they fought over money and split up, then some portion of them tried a new project and gave up, but that was years ago and they were all 22. I wonder if they’re doing interesting stuff somewhere now that they’re presumably more grown up. Or maybe they’re doing furniture warehouse commercials in Alabama.

I think in general, cringe humor (at least when it comes to internet randoms) is the kind of thing people engage in for just a few years before going "what am I even doing, these are dumb kids" and moving on. Either that or they become Kiwifarms.

Yea there seems to be a VERY sharp divide between 'spends a few years laughing at someone just for being weird/awkward, realizes that's a pretty lovely way to treat someone and moves on' and 'devotes entire identity to doubling down', there doesn't seem to be much middle ground. Like, the podcast The F Plus pretty well nails it. Sure there's elements of 'lol lookit the weirdos' but it's basically just an internet safari, 90% of it is stuff like laughing about people being way too open about their kinks in public or crazy motherfuckers shoving magnets in their fingers but there's never any real malice. It's just like 'hey did you know there's a community of people who wanna gently caress cars? Yea that's a weird thing, let's giggle at a dude talking about not loving the car while its hot'. They save actual malice and anger for, ya know, racist reddit types and all. That's about the only way you can do 'cringe' humor without just being a weirdo yourself. Just be all 'yea I'm going into their world, no you shouldn't gently caress with them leave them be, I just think it's funny'.
