bf2: modern combat was a cool game in its heyday but man, when i played it after they announced its servers were closing, holy poo poo did that thing not age well at all.

that said, in addition to the hotswap being rad, the multiplayer featured several extremely fuckin awesome maps that i really, really miss. dammage, backstab, special op, hidden, gently caress man just typing those map names make me sad. especially 'cause there is absolutely no way we ever, ever see even a single one of them again, they are completely lost to the world, existing now only in fuzzy memories and a few blurry youtube videos.

Going to break out my nerd cred here, but when she got talking about war profiteering in Last Jedi I looked it up on wookieepedia and eighty thousand words later I discovered that Canto Bight was located in the Corporate Sector Authority. I'm surprised that made it into the new canon, but it also makes sense why nobody came to help the Resistance in TLJ if they're running around the edges of the CSA. Nobody in that area of space gives a poo poo about your band of rebels unless you can pay.

This makes me wonder what happened to the Marble Hornets crew. Wow I never knew this. I heard they made some kind of variety show later on that was popular but I didn’t watch. I'm hoping the maps in BFV are better than the ones in BF1. If you love sniping then BF1 is the game for you since all those maps give you all the advantages without any pesky things like offering cover or camouflage for your enemies. For everyone else, it was terrible.

Had a few good maps though, but for the DLC they were mostly bad.

The question of how much Star Wars or other franchises that use a fascist aesthetic has influenced the nazis of today is really worth asking. Like the video points out, fascism has always prioritized aesthetics, partially because it is about feeling as much as doctrine, but today's nazi teens and slovenly 30-somethings come from a culture that fetishizes movies and other media productions to the point where they called themselves "gamers" before they were nazis. It's not too much at all to say that their idea of how to be a nazi comes from movies and tv shows.

This is going to sound stupid, but there's a core group of 20-40 nazis in my city who have been active since the election, and they put more work into their look than they put into their events. The whole thing is as much about how they dress and what formations they walk in as much as anything else. They had a rally yesterday, and one of them dressed up like a medieval knight (except with cargo shorts):

He would periodically put his hands on his waist with his chest puffed out and point at specific protestors and then gesture for them to come fight him with big, over-exaggerated arm movements. He also stayed on that ledge for hours even though it was very narrow and he kept losing his balance, all to keep the (in theory) imposing perspective. I have no doubt that he based his nazi persona on Darth Vader specifically. His behavior was right out of what you'd expect of a Darth Vader walkaround character at Disneyland. He kept trying to intimidate people by making exaggerated head movements to signal that he was looking at specific people, like how Darth Vader has to jerk his whole torso around to show that he's looking at something because the actor is in a big rubber suit.

It's like a pop-culture ouroboros, or one of those pig farms where they feed the pigs the ground-up organ meat of the dead pigs, and it's unsettling that this deadly serious 19-year-old who's ramping up to kill people is drawing on the pop-culture imagery of child-friendly escapist pastiche. First as tragedy, then as farce blah blah blah, but I kept thinking about it as I watched the video.

Also, if you'd like to learn more about fascism beyond the Eco article, Roger Griffin has a few excellent books on the subject, and Robert Paxton's The Anatomy of Fascism situates 20th-century fascism within the historical contexts of liberalism and socialism that it defined itself against. I also just finished Against the Fascist Creep by Alex Reid Ross, which is about how white supremacists coopt the language and ideas of left movements in order to position themselves as reasonable alternatives to liberal capitalism. It's very good and very timely.

I know he's going for a European culture warrior thing, but his idea of what it means to be scary and cool and transmitted through body language and gestures reminded me a lot of Darth Vader in a parade. Also that it was a big impractical mask covering his whole head. His friends just wore balaclavas and sunglasses.

But maybe it is me who was poisoned by Star Wars to the point where every pathetic play-acting fascist looks like Darth Vader to me when in fact they've always been pathetic play-actors.

This just reminds me of how weird it is how neo-nazis love Norse mythology.

A mythology where Thor crossdresses in order to sneak into a wedding to kill a giant, pretty much everything involving Loki in general, and the gods are portrayed as a bunch of paranoid wrecks that are trying to keep their inevitable end from happening as much as possible.

Neo-nazis only really like it as far as skin deep for the most part, it's not all that surprising when they do the same things to greek, roman and a handful of other influences, look at all the groups of stringbean nerdos calling their boys clubs "[Thing] EVROPA" and whatever else. They'll hijack the odal or elhaz rune for a crappy tattoo, sometimes mjolnir iconography, but they mostly can't tell you poo poo all past "Uh, Thor was the god of thunder and a big badass and Loki was the trickster" and a lot really only want to use it to sucker people in and yeah, worship big strong boys of old, same exact idea behind the fierce sucking off that right wingers give to spartan bullshit.
