I don't know if it was grind that made me stop playing JRPGs for a long time, so much as it was the weird hoops you had to jump through in a lot of games in regards to some of the side quests. The one instance that stands out in my mind is Final Fantasy 12, where to get one of the special end game items or something, you had to make sure not to open certain specific chests, and there no real way of knowing which ones they were.

You don’t need the Zodiac spear for anything though. It’s just an overpowered spear.

Sorry, I didn't catch your post before I made the edit. It was just a design choice that I found really aggravating. I think I gave up on FF12 for other reasons as well (which I do regret a bit, since it had an interesting setup from what I remember reading about it later on).

The FFV Four Job Fiesta shows some older games don't really need grinding too, depending on what you roll (some teams definitely need some grinding).

Pokémon was never a hard game making it easier to keep up makes it easier which drains a lot of the fun.

It's more like in X/Y the experience share system was given a huge buff and the game was only half balanced around having the item that makes all Pokémon gain experience from every battle, so if you have it on you level extremely fast and the game is trivial, but if you turn it off the game can get pretty grindy, with not much middle ground. The actual solution is to turn it on and keep a roster of 10+ guys and rotate through them instead of a team of 6, but the game (and franchise in general) doesn't do much to encourage that kind of thinking.

I don't think that's true. I think there's something special to playing the game yourself, and the combat is not THAT bad and if you engage with the side missions for extra weapons can actually become pretty fun/fast at the very least. The problem is the game puts its worst foot forward with the level in the lumbermill, it is bad but no other combat section is as bad as that one.

Deadly Premonition is Twin Peaks filtered through Japan and then badly translated back into English.

The special edition of Deadly Premonition from what I understand made combat much less tedious, and yeah, one of the first couple side missions unlocks basically the only guns you need to use for the game. Playing that around a television with a group of friends to pass the controller (not to mention navigate with the physical map they included and a copy of gamefaqs for some of the weird stuff) and enjoy the cutscenes as they unfolded was a blast, not to mention the reactions when the physics engine poo poo the bed while driving and sent our car flying. And we always served pie. None of us believed when we started that we'd actually make it through the game, but we did, and I remember more from that game than most of the AAA stuff I've seen in the last few years.

i never minded grinding in jrpgs, in fact i really like doing it sometimes when i need to do something to clear my mind and not think. it's prolly why i really like the first dragon quest game despite it being archaic at best and consisting mostly of grinding for money and levels.

I can handle the grind on portable systems; I hit a certain limit sitting on a couch where I start asking too many life questions if I've spent 60 hours of my life on a game.

I think the entire purpose for the spear was to give players who are re-running the game an easy way to power through the early half. There are a few intentional sequence breaks that let you get to it very early.

most games do not integrate the story into the gameplay. they tell it to you through cutscenes (even dark souls make this mistake in the unnecessary intro). the story and gameplay are treated as separate entities.

the last giant in ds2 is probably the most obvious example (and weirdly i think hbomb left it out of his defense of the game).

Considering we're talking about game storytelling I feel I should mention that I've been rewatching Raycevick's Halo Years Later series. It's a great example of mediocre game storytelling that gets buoyed up by excellent presentation. At least until you get to Halo 4 after which the presentation can't even hold up some of the nonsense

i don't think cutscenes are inherently a failure in game storytelling but it's definitely preferable to work that poo poo into the gameplay if possible

When I played X and Y I threw my first pokemon into the wonder trade until I got a Beldum. I never swapped it out. Never used any other pokemon. By the end of the game my Metagross had never fainted and I'd beaten the game with a single pokemon, without any excessive grinding. They are very easy games.

I played a lot of Disgaea 2, but I never got to the end. I remember reading there was some weird way to super-level characters quickly in those games, but I was never clear on how you were supposed to do it.

You could pick up enemies and throw them on top of eachother to create a single enemy with their combined level, iirc the rule was that it added the lower level monster's level to the higher one, you'd throw enemies on top of eachother until you had a super high level enemy(that wasn't so overlevelled that you couldn't damage it anymore) that you could finish off for a huge exp reward. Instead of killing a dozen level 10 monsters for 200 exp each, you could throw them all together and get 60,000+ exp from the exact same level.

It's been a long time since I played so my memories are fuzzy, but I recall you follow a certain character around, they go to their very boarded up basement or something. I don't remember anything outright saying it until the plot reveals it, but you can infer it early based on the character's actions against the others.

You can also see how all the victims go to the same seedy place with the same people and hang around in an inaccessible secret room for a while.
