Hi, welcome to the YouTube tech idiots fandom thread.

Lots of random vids get linked around and I've just noticed a lot of cross-discussions between the threads which sometimes get derailed into specifically talking about the YouTube person rather than whatever stupid poo poo the original thread is about. Probably idiot computer stuff.

Here's a list of some:

LinusTechTips

https://www.youtube.com/user/LinusTechTips

One of the big ones with a bunch of other random channels as part of Linus Media Group. Don't go in expecting some solid technical breakdown and what not. It's very much on the semi-superficial/entertainment layer.

Nitr0 posted:

I used to know Linus from years back before he became a YouTube superstar and he was a nice guy.

Cheers

They do benchmarks and such but nothing like our next channel...

GamersNexus

https://www.youtube.com/user/GamersNexus

Jesus is back and he's hella mad about the stupidity that permeates throughout the industry. This dude is 100% legit and he isn't afraid to mince words because he does not give a gently caress if some company blacklists him for spitting hot fiyah truth. Extremely good albeit his videos CAN be dry. Great sense of humour when it comes through and if you want legit information and up to date stuff going on in the industry this is the channel to come to.

LGR

https://www.youtube.com/user/phreakindee

Just fantastic retrospective videoes on old computer hardware'n'poo poo with some sprinkling of modern stuff or new-yet-old poo poo. Very soothing voice, very entertaining, and completely sane.

Speaking of sane: you can discuss them but Adored & 8-Bit Guy are both Persona non grata.

There's also a lot of blatant shilling people like Unboxed Therapy.

Recommendations always welcome.

Hardware Unboxed

Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI8iQa1hv7oV_Z8D35vVuSg/featured

Pretty basic no-nonsense hardware reviews and news, I like the charts/graphs and presentation of data. He also re-reviews video cards several times of the course of years to track any performance changes which is neat.

Timmy Joe PC Tech

Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZACqKnnCu9f8Z8OZz2771w

I just found this channel, he's a big fat goofball kind of like Linus but I don't see as much overtly stupid content. Has some pretty cool overclocking vids where he immerses stuff in ice buckets and poo poo.

TechLinked is my fav channel now even tho it's only a few weeks old.

Bitwit is a decent channel. I became a fan of him when he did a video where he tested front mount radiator placement vs top mount, with data.

Jayztwocents rubs me the wrong way, I really dislike that guy. Dimitri from hardware canucks is cool.

Bit-tech are cool for the more 'out there' stuff. They came about from the death of an old media magazine called CustomPC here in the UK which was my loving bible as a kid growing up. They do an awful lot of cool instructional videos that go right into the details of daunting poo poo like hardline watercooling and have a very active community of people who do some really awesome looking custom builds. Growing up reading this and seeing stuff like the old Asetek phase change coolers or the totally passive Zalman water-cooling rigs was what made me blow my first serious bonus cheque on an insane custom loop inside a Corsair 900D.

There were a couple episodes on LTT of Linus going to the NCIX liquidation auction and reminiscing. Apparently he was their watercooling order guy at some point, so he spends a bunch of time looking through box lots of old lovely fittings/et cetera and going "why did I EVER think anyone was going to buy this" including Reserator tubing.

I Love Hardware Cannucks Case videos because I think computer cases are somewhat subjective based on what aesthetic your going for. And they do a good job of filming each enclosure in a cool techy artistic way. But I am also just a pleb who likes Wide aperture shots, LED's and tempered glass. so maybe that's just my opinion.

Marques Brownlee/MKBHD is probably my favorite because a lot of his PC videos are SFF focused.

Jayztwocents is the runner up just because of his "still cool gamer dad" aesthetic, but his videos can be a little clickbaity. His reviews tend to examine products on day-to-day practicality which is something I dont see many people actually do that well. Him and Marques are two people I think I could enjoy a long dinner with since they seem like well rounded dudes outside of YouTube.

Linus is a necessary evil for me because of the massive amount of things he reviews. His channel tends to review things first, more or less competently. Clickbait galore but I get YouTube capitalism favors clickbait and who wants to leave money on the table. Surprised no one has said it yet, probably because you're much nicer people than me, but my ears bleed when listening to Linus speak. He did a video review once where he was sick, and it was actually kind of nice to watch/listen to because that cursed voice of his wasn't assaulting my ears. I don't really hate the guy personally because I know he's attracting a certain audience (and I'd be doing stupid videos too for money.) But I get the feeling he's probably a bit obnoxious in person.

Good thread idea by the way. I used to read MaximumPC a bunch as a kid and now that print is gone, YT is the new hotness and there's a mountain of crap people to sift through.

I like a lot of Linus videos because he shows an awful lot of his fuckups and how he fixes them on camera, and I find that the best way to really learn about something. Similarly, I find industrial/enterprise stuff more interesting than consumer stuff, and he's the only guy I know of on YT who dips into enterprise stuff every now and then from the perspective of someone who doesn't deal with the stuff all day, and it makes those videos far more approachable and interesting to me, someone who doesn't touch computers for a living.

If anyone finds this stuff interesting, Youtuber Strange Parts (the same guy who did that "build an iphone from parts bought in Shenzhen markets" video that made the rounds a while back) just did a video on how a multi-layer PCB is made, and his channel seems to be evolving into "how China makes stuff" videos away from "this is what you can buy in China".

What I meant by my above post is that there are plenty of YouTube watchers out there who have literally never heard of ZFS, never really understood the purpose of rackmounting hardware, didn't know bonding multiple ethernet ports was a thing, etc. and watching something like Linus work on his server room is a nice way for said Youtube watchers to at least become aware of the existence of enterprise stuff. I haven't come across any other mainstream tech channels that even look sideways at non-consumer stuff. It's interesting to watch, even if it's only useful as a first step into learning about some other part of the computer world.

What about my friend Morten?

He plays with actual (old) enterprise stuff in a house he inherited that he basically turned into a giant home lab. He does some videos in his dayjob as some kind of tech or something too.

I just picked on at random https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-aOGni1G9k where it looks like he's setting up a giant storage server for use in an actual production environment. It's not as exciting as Linus, and I think he focus's on straight hardware a bit much, but he does do some ESXi cluster setups and stuff occasionally.

He does do some really oddball and dumbshit some times with electronics and tools, but other that that you're much more likely to learn something actually useful about enterprise stuff.

I wasn't joking when I said don't try and learn anything from Linus's "enterprise" stuff

In one of those videos he literally describes the proper, professional way to do it, and then follows it with “but we’re going to do it lolsowacky.”

It’s dumb to do mission critical storage the way he did it but that’s kinda the channel theme to begin with. They also created some 30 thousand dollar monster that would run like 14 instances of some shooter all off one computer. And water cooled a house. And created a bootable thumb drive with windows on it. These aren’t things you should do and they always talk about how it’s dumb to do it.
