If our upkeep is low why would we add upkeep!? If we're going to make a lair somewhere, we should make it somewhere where it makes sense. We also are just getting this game going, getting a little ahead of ourselves. I would say if we want to have any kind of downtime between jobs we go back to the Isle to make sure the beavers integrate into the workforce and get to work on improvements. Maybe have a chat with our manager about what has occurred during the past two months; any discovering by the locals? Any improvements to the mines? Any humans in the cells in need of transformation?

Turning in the contract.

”Time to pack up people! Sarga calls out, readying her stuff. The Malaria would die out on its own, so it's no point in hanging around and inviting detection.

Once the crew had collected their meagre belongings, Sarga cast the spell to return them to the Dark Isle. They appeared on the teleportation platform in the pyramid and Sarga waited for the effects of the spell to wear off.

”You know, I always wondered what this place looked like. This was from Irwin, the name given to her second stingray person. He was looking around with interest. The more provincial beavers were clearly in awe of the place, they had probably never been to anywhere bigger than the nearest town.

”Follow me and try to stay together. Get lost and it will be hard for me to find you again.” Sarga calls out.

She leads them to a small hostel that specializes in aquatic folk. She sets them up with rooms and a small stipend. She is in the money and is feeling that this is a good time to improve morale.

Once her small group of minions is settled, she contacts her employer, Lord Gol. He appears before her in all his skeletal glory.

”Ahh, ms Scrawgill. My reports say you  have been especially zealous in your task. Two villages wiped out and a new form of malaria ravaging many of the others.” his tone was inscrutable, lacking vocal cords.

”Is that a problem my lord?” Sarga replies in a level tone.

”Not to much of one, I have ordered my other subcontractors to reign in their own schemes, it seems that one of them is going to fail me, so you may have done me a favour.” he pauses a second before carrying on. ”That said, you fulfilled your contract and remained undetected, I have released the rest of the funds and your bonus has been deposited in your account. I shall tell my acquaintances of your skills, there is always work for a go getting new dungeon master. I shall watch your career with interest.”

”Thank you my lord.” she replies. Lord Gol dispenses with the pleasantries and dispels her without another word.

The  next day is another job hunting one.

1 - the message boards have some new ideas.

A - Genocide Needed - the merfolk of Arielston are being troublesome, someone needed to wipe them out.

B- Why will no one kill me? - King requires spectacular assassination.

C- Trade links required. Monster needed to raise new island, populate it with a dungeon and hold it from opposing kingdom until our heroes can take it.

D- Fight fire with fire. - nearby town has hired villain to disrupt out trade routes, we want to hire someone to fight back - quietly, as we do not want the wider world to know of this.

E- New self sustaining dungeon required. For weeding out of wannabies and long term loot and experience gains for kingdoms heroes.  Good pay for dangerous work!

F - YOU MUST ACT NOW.  10,000 gold. Up front.

G - free choice.

Level up time, do we want to improve -

A - Our Architecture.

B - Our Management

C - Our Magic

D - Our Combat

E - Our Monster handling.

All open to other ideas on what to spend our growing piles of gold on.

We have largely relied on using the water to our advantage both in combat and in hiding, merfolk take that advantage away. The only benefit to going for that genocide is to give our minions a chance to slaughter some non-humans.

Job is to kill them, unless we negotiated it up front that "troublesome" meant they could be relocated. Likewise, why would they want to join us in the first place? Seems like its going for a long shot on a scenario in which we are very very vulnerable.

Before we even accept a deal from anyone, we go up to the merfolk and say, "Hey, someone big and powerful wants you all DEAD. They even offered to pay me XXXX gold to do it!"

But we say that we won't do that, because of our belief in aquatic solidarity against the landwalkers.

We can attempt to broker a revenge-deal with the merfolk, to gain their trust. We have been working on our project management and construction skills, so we can assist in moving and evacuating the local merfolk away from Arielston, maybe set some of them up with temporary jobs and housing. Once Arielston is a ghost town, we can wreck some buildings and stage a big fight, maybe let off some big pulses of magic so the boss thinks we're wholesale slaughtering them all. Either way, in the end we report back that the merfolk have left Arielston for good and get paid.

The next time the Boss from the Arielston Job wants to do anything underwater, however, he'll have to get special clearance through us or else the troublesome merfolk will somehow return at the worst of moments.

Monster handling

I want to make a giant scary amphibious terror beast and let it go into the wide blue yonder, but keep a tracker on it so we can pull it in as a hail Mary when things go spectacularly bad for us.

Also, having a home base somewhere safe makes sense as we can teleport to and from the dark isle. Means we can keep delicate and in progress experiments safe.

I'm thinking 1C and 2B or E.

Holding a dungeon is a great opportunity for us to practice our craft at little personal risk, while still letting our minions build our wealth and providing a source of heroes to be minionified. Short term high risk/high value contracts are good, but we don't need the money enough to justify the risk.

I'm torn on what to upgrade, as management would help us control and refine our minion pyramid scheme, but greater monster handling might open up paths to even more gnarly aquatic minions. We could use a heavy hitter to be our defense of last resort, and I'm still holding out for that hyrda.

That said, our personal combat ability really is rather dire....

malbogio

Personal combat ability matters a lot less when you already have an army, so long as you can keep that army loyal and effective.

Building a reputation.

A bit of light island building seems like fun. Saga selects that one and waits to be teleported to the interview.

Once the dizziness had faded, she can see the room is in some human palace, with the summoning circle drawn in chalk. This and the presence of armed guards, generally considered rude in these deals, showed his was a kingdom that did not have much dealings with the Dark Isle.

”Dungeon master Scrawgill?” the voice was reedy, trying to sound confident, but cracking at the edges.

”Yes my lord.” she replied smoothly and friendly. ”How may I be of assistance?”

”You are to be confidential with the information here?” he asked. Another insult!

”Oh course my lord. This and our work are the only dealings my people have  with you, and we have nothing to gain by breaking our contracts. We would also have no one to tell. If you don't even wish to tell me your name then that is acceptable.” To be fair, she would most likely forget this woman and as soon as she stepped out of the room.

”Good, Good. I have read your resume Ms Scrawgill, and it is most, erm impressive.” his tone of voice said you could easily replace impressive with terrifying, but that may well work to Sarga’s advantage. ”We are engaged in a trade war with our  enemies, we both claim tariffs from a straight, but ownership of that straight is contested. We wish to build a fortress in the center of that to all us to project our force, but we are not willing to start a war by using a wizard to raise an island.

”So you wish for me to raise and island, build a fortress on it and then allow it to fall to heroes  from your kingdom?”

”Exactly. No on would be able to prove  we hired you, and any claims we dd could be seen as cover by our enemies!” this was true, while a few monsters would just do a scheme like this, most of them would be paid. As they would not turn up in court, it became hard to prove who hired them.

”I think i can accomplish this, what are the specifications of his fortress?”

”We need it to be large enough to hold five hundred men, with a good harbour for  five or more ships to dock. We hope to collect the tariffs from the island. We would be willing to offer you ten thousand gold pieces for this work.”
