my friend had a lovely landlord in dc who worked for the state department and he ended up telling the guy if he had to sue him for his deposit, and he'd forward the details of any successful suit to OPM to assess whether someone who defrauds their renters should have a security clearance the guy bitched him out on the phone hard that this was extortion but he returned the deposit

Sorry to hear about your poo poo landlord OP. I own some properties with my relatives, and i love having cool tenants like you. If you end up with a poo poo renter who ends up never paying rent, then it is a pain in the rear end to get them evicted in certain states. I understand why these laws favor the tenant, but man does it suck having a dude just live in your property for almost half a year before you can actually boot them. What I'm saying is that you should take some solace in knowing that your landlord is probably getting hosed over by someone somewhere at this very moment.

I gave my last landlord a bottle of tequila so he would give the keys to my car to a guy that was shipping it because i moved accross state and he literally called me the next day and was like lol im going out of town come get your keys.

I moved out of my apt at the end of last month, and have been trying to ‘argue’ with the rental company over things. Except for the company’s phone rings until an automated message comes on, and any email I send has to go through the ‘tenant portal’ on their website. I do not have a good feeling about my deposit coming back... They also never fixed my dryer, which would set off the smoke detector if I didn’t turn on the AC since there was no goddamn ventilation in the place.

We also had some problems where they had some contractors painting while we were gone and they went into my bedside drawer and grabbed my old credit card I don't use anymore and tried to buy $400 worth of stuff with it. Luckily my bank called and told me. When we told them they were like "oh, well let us know what the police say"

My landlord is pretty chill for a large corporation type place. It’s weird because a friend of mine who lives in the slum part of the city says they suck poo poo. Maybe it’s because I live in the suburbs? I image shady corporate dudes treating poorer areas shittier because they know the residents have little options or probably even a limited grasp with English. They basically leave me alone and just let me do my thing. Getting them to fix things can be a bit of a pain so usually I wait until enough stuff is broken to call and then make a stink about it so I can get it all done in one day and not have to deal with them over and over. I’ve been waiting for them to fix a pot hole in my driveway and mow the loving lawn for 4 months but other than that it’s whatever.

I've had two landlords in a row now allow rain to enter my bedroom. One was sitting on the biggest piece of poo poo house and gave us a "deal" on rent. He didn't care much when the roof blew off, since he was selling the thing to be demolished and replaced by a condo anyway. RIP my old party house. The second landlord has a really great property (my current place). Just decided to hire the most piece of poo poo roofers I've ever seen. I'm talking its been a month they've been working on ours and the adjacent property. Exposed roof=rain gets in. In this town real roofers knock em out in 2-3 days tops.

Had a family of 4 rent a place I own for a couple years gave them their full deposit back and didn't charge them for their last month there to help them with moving expenses. Not all of us are shity but boy howdy there are some real loving rear end hats who rent property. Ex: our POTUS

Landlords suck, yes. Thankfully the one I rented from gave me my deposit back and there was a modicum of bullshit involved. Though, one time the guys putting down mulch dumped a bunch in front of some vent and my apartment flooded and all the carpet had to be replaced. Now I own a house and while mortgages also suck at least the bank isn't up my rear end for anything day to day.

hell it's set up to autopay so literally they get their money at the stroke of midnight and it's always there. other than that, one time I let them know an exterior light was flickering and they replaced it in like an hour. there's also a big gazebo you can reserve and a theater and an entertainment venue thing. i never use that poo poo because im sitting quietly in my apartment drawing star trek characters

My old apartment has a fuckin 50 step " Deep cleaning your apartment when moving out" sheet that they gave me when I vacated. They've got a cleaning crew that did a poo poo all job on the apt when I moved in, so I know it's basically just a list of excuses to withhold money. The Apt before that withheld my security deposit on the grounds that the 50 year old refrigerator that never worked and I asked repeatedly to be replaced/removed was broken... no poo poo.

It would be cool if we lived in a world where nobody was really there to tell people how to do poo poo and people just took responsibility for their own actions like adults and made decisions for themselves as to what’s important for them and other people. Other than the whole “welp I made a bad decision and lovely poo poo happened because of nature and society but I don’t want to hear about it unless I’m complaining that it’s your fault” poo poo. It’s like sorry buddy there’s only like a handful of actual adults here and none of them are your parents.
