DEATH STRANDING is the new AAA game in development from Hideo Kojima, one of the most famous/infamous videogame auteurs. It will be a Playstation 4 exclusive from his new Kojima Studios, with funding by Sony.

A release date has not been set.

:siren:BACKGROUND ON KOJIMA:siren:

Hideo Kojima is best known for the Metal Gear series which he created and developed for Konami for almost 3 decades. Originally lauded for inventing the stealth genre, his later games got famous for having convoluted plots, magical realism and challenging artistic statements. Kojima may also be responsible for bringing a lot of the cinematic tools of Hollywood into videogames with his cinematic directing. Kojima has also been accused of being indulgent with time and budget, although his games have always made plenty of money on delivery and been praised for their gameplay and entertainment. He has often half-joked about wanting to break free from the Metal Gear franchise and try other things, and his acrimonious departure from Konami (for being indulgent with time and budget) may be the ripping off of the band-aid that he needed. When he shopped around for a new investor for his new studio, Sony quickly saw an opportunity and basically gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wants. Kojima is a huge fanboy of Hollywood stars and they seem to like him well enough so he is nabbing some great talent for this game.

Side note: despite portraying women in a good light most of the time, Kojima sometimes says or does something knuckle-headed about women. Regarding Metal Gear Solid V, he got indignant when fans complained about Quiet's over-sexualized appearance. Recently he referred to Lindsay Wagner's 1970's self as her "perfect" version, which probably doesn't come across well as something you'd say to a 68 year old woman.

:siren:WHAT WE OFFICIALLY/PROBABLY KNOW SO FAR:siren:

E3 2018 interview with Hideo Kojima and Lindsay Wagner:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJrdo71TpOw

Death Stranding will de-emphasize combat, something that helped pitch the idea to Lindsay Wagner who had reservations about appearing in a violent videogame. Kojima says that Lindsay Wagner's character could only be played by the actress, so we can easily assume Tarantino style reference to Wagner's previous body of work (Bionic Woman)

Guillermo del Toro's likeness will be appearing in the game, but will not be voiced or mocapped by him.

Death Stranding is being built on the Decima Engine, which was developed by Guerilla Studios and most famously used in the very beautiful Horizon Zero Dawn. Already last year the two parties reported that Kojima Studios made improvements to the lighting in Decima. According to Kojima's panel at Playstation Experience 2016, Guerilla just handed him a box with their source code even before they had a contract, which left a big impression on him.

Mads Mikkelsen reports being confused when Kojima told him the premise of the game

Norman Reedus' character is named Sam Porter Bridges. He works as a Porter for a company called Bridges.

There is a dangerous phenomenon called Timefall, which appears to refer to the rain. It appears to cause accelerated aging, as it hits Sam's hand and causes the skin to age, and caused a photograph to deteriorate. Presumably this explains why there are almost no buildings or large plants on the surface, and why they need special Porters to deliver things between human settlements.

Lea Seydoux's character works for another company called Fragile Express. She attempts to hire Sam away.

Mads Mikkelsen's character appears to resurrect dead World War 2 soldiers to do his bidding.

Dying in the game appears to cause a Voidout, which is when you wake up alive again, but naked and in a crater.

It appears that every time Sam dies, he gets a new handprint on his body

Dying in the game appears to not reset you to your last saved game. Instead the timeline continues and you respawn in a lake-filled crater.

The United States of America appears to be replaced by the United Cities of America

There are invisible humanoid creatures which appear to be dangerous to humans. They sometimes appear as black shadowy phantoms with a cord coming out of them. The phantoms appear to be hunting humans, but have trouble seeing humans clearly. They appear to bumble around until they hear human noises. Sam covers his mouth when sneaking around them.

Lea Seydoux's character says that Sam has a "chiral allergy."

She also says that she and he have a condition called the "dooms," which can be measured in "levels." This may or may not refer to their ability to detect the phantoms. Lea Seydoux says she can see them, and Sam says he can sense their proximity, probably exhibited by his goosebumps.

Lea Seydoux's outfit has some sort of ferro-fluid spikes. May or may not act like phantom proximity detectors because of their similarity to goosebumps.

Sam has a photo of what appears to be an older version of himself, and older Lindsay Wagner and another woman who might be Lea Seydoux

Lea Seydoux says that a "crypto-biote a day keeps the timefall away." Crypto-biotes appear to be small pink maggots that float around when Sam wakes up in a water-filled crater. In one of the trailers, Sam is seen vomiting out black crypto-biotes, which turn pink and float upwards in the air.

Game Informer: What We Think We Figured Out From the Death Stranding E3 Trailer

IGN: Everything you missed in the Death Stranding E3 trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inOQ6-3yd28

Might be garbage, might be obvious, but spoiler tagging just in case:
The baby in a jar appears to be a way to survive being killed by invisible monsters. If you die, your baby, presumably a clone of you, grows up immediately and replaces you?

The title might refer to being stranded somewhere without your clone baby, resulting in a final stranded state where you can't revive.

Alternate theory: the title might refer to being stuck in a death loop where you can't die and are used as a zombie by the phantoms. One of the Porters is shown killing himself rather than be caught by the phantoms. Mads Mikkelsen's character uses zombies. Who knows?

Death Stranding might also be a pun on "strands." Cords appear to be connecting Mads Mikkelsen with his zombie soldiers, and the phantoms appear to have strands coming out of them

Message boards and Reddit threads have speculated that the phantoms might be other players haunting your game. Could be a longshot.

My thoughts:

Lea Seydoux is from a competitor or cross-purposes entity to Bridges. Fragile is the name of it. Not an enemy, but same goal different means. That’s why she asks if Sam wants to come work for her.

Lindsay Wagner is Sam’s Mom or wife and he thinks she’s dead, but she’s like lost in time or nanomachines.

I think maybe why there is a Bridges entity and a “working man” Sam Bridges is either timeline fuckery or we are playing past, present, and future. Working man Sam becomes CEO Sam. The themes here may lean more towards corporations rather than the government/military themes of Metal Gear. And the oil type substance suggests some environmentalism.

The glass jar babies have something to do with rationalizing you getting to come back to life if you die. Like being undead in Dark Souls or something. Bet Norman Reedus’s baby is him.

Need more Mads Mikkelson in future content imo.

I have no idea if this game is gonna be a dumpster fire because no one is reigning in Kojima but at the very least it'll be an interesting and unique AAA game which is something of an oxymoron.

Also you can't post the kojima backstory without his hilariously explanation for why Quiet was half naked in MGS5 and why gamers need to be shamed for being critical of him. if I could frame a tweet it would be that one.

Done. Is there a "that's kojima" emoji?

edit: my personal guess about the game is that time will kill us all eventually and that it's okay and that you might as well do something nice or cool before you die that will outlast you, like making a AAA videogame

I will be a little disappointed if being fired from Konami isn't thematically worked into the story. One of my favorite things about Ratatouille was that the story was secretly a giant middle finger from Pixar to Disney back when they thought their exclusivity deal with Disney wasn't going to be renewed (creative master dies, his business is run by a soulless moneygrubber and a new creative prodigy struggles to make art in the company that wants to stifle creativity)

I could be wrong, but I get concerned that the main reason why his games sold so well was that he tacked his crazy story ideas onto a mainstream-palatable action stealth game. Without shooty military action, I worry that Death Stranding might end up like Bladerunner 2049 or Annihilation, ambitious scifi pieces that reviewed well but didn't pull in mainstream bucks.

God bless Sony and their deep pockets.

I hope they go more realistic than Uncharted/TombRaider/HZD climbing. One of the things that takes me out of all three franchises is the super duper monkey climbing where you have enough arm power to jump ten feet straight up and grab another ledge

kojima is......... dying???

I got a news flash for you, buddy. We all are.

quote:

When The Telegraph sits down for a rare audience with iconic game developer Hideo Kojima in a private meeting room off the E3 show floor his body is with us in downtown Los Angeles but his mind is very much up the road in Hollywood.

The night before he premiered the fourth trailer for his latest opus Death Stranding at Sony Playstation’s press conference. Much like the first three it proved both utterly compelling and completely baffling. Opaque cutscenes featuring foetuses in jars and invisible monsters who left handprints in the mud punctuated long-awaited first glimpses of gameplay almost completely comprised of scenes of The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus’ courier character trudging forlornly across beautiful but barren landscapes.

Kojima obsessives - of which there are many due to his incredibly popular series of mind-bending Metal Gear Solid action games - have spent two years poring over these clips and also the director’s social media feeds in an attempt to decipher what it all means. Significant swathes of the internet are stuffed with fan theories taking in everything from hardcore scientific theory to hatstand science fiction fantasies - often all at once.

Unfortunately for them Kojima is no mood to offer a helping hand.

“Once the game is completed I believe people will be able to connect all these elements,” he explains via a translator. “It’s not that I’m just putting random hints out there - everything comes together. I’m trying to make sure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit in. But if I just give answers to people at this stage? I don’t think that’s very interesting.

“We live in a society where any questions you have you can go to the internet and immediately get answers. What is fun? What is not fun? What is in this game? What is not in this game? Everyone asks but that’s exactly what I want people to perceive on their own, because that is what is fun about a video game. I want people to have these conversations to build excitement until they have the final answers. The game hasn’t been completed at this point but we already have some sort of game going on with the fans already.”

It has been made clear that Kojima is not ready to talk about Death Stranding’s storyline or gameplay or structure or pretty much anything connected to what players will actually do in it. He is, however, keen to talk about the stellar cast he’s been assembling for the project.

The new trailer revealed two new additions to the previously announced line up of Reedus, Danish actor du jour Mads Mikkelson, and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Torro: French-born Bond girl Lea Seydoux; and veteran actor Lindsay Wagner who, it transpires, had a somewhat transformative effect on the young Kojima while playing The Bionic Woman in the ‘70s TV show of the same name.

“As a teenager she was the person I idolised the most, the actress that had the most effect on me,” he reveals. “For Death Stranding the idea was always Norman [Reedus] would be the main character. Next I had to think about the heroine. This year I turned 55 and maybe tomorrow I’m going to be dead, I don’t know. Every time I work on a project I want to make it like it might be my last so I die with no regrets. So in that regard I thought I’d ask Lindsay as the person I admire the most whether she’d like to work with me.

“Similarly Lea is a person I have huge respect for so I wanted to ask her to be part of the project. I’m not thinking about what kind of impact they’ll have on the marketing of the game - they’re just people I would really like to work with. My idea is not just to 3D scan them and just using that data. had an idea of creating the game together and them having an impact on what the game is and fully being part of the game development. It’s a huge honour they accepted working with me because of that.”

Hollywood actors have started to look on video games more favourably thanks to an increase in both the budgets of AAA titles and also the sophistication of performance capture techniques but it’s still unusual to see a cast quite as star studded as Death Stranding’s. But Kojima knocks back my suggestion this is an attempt to legitimise his chosen medium.

“That’s not my aim at all. Game development is something that takes a lot of energy and requires a lot of time and is something you wholly invest your life into. I’m sure it’s the same case for making a movie but when you’re investing so much you don’t think about whether [actors] sell or whether they’re famous or they’re established. For me it was more working with people I trust and people I like to work with.

"Back in the day we didn’t use actors - we created characters from scratch like they did in anime. In my case I’ve been making games for 32 years and [the technology now means] I can create whatever I can think of with 100% validity. But that’s not interesting because it has no analogue element, it has no organic, living element. For example, if I had Norman here I might say I want him sitting in this chair and he’ll say, no, I think it would be better if I sit over here. And I’ll be, right, let’s see what comes out of it.

”I want to get the kind of chemical reaction that comes out of using these actors, to create the game and develop the game together. Working with Norman, working with Mads, working with Lindsay, working with Lea - all of them contribute a lot and have a lot of ideas. Especially Mads - he’s the guy who takes over the whole set at times!”

Wagner, it transpires, was a harder sell. Kojima reveals she didn’t have a particular positive impression of video games it took a considerable amount of effort to convince her to take part.

“Most games have elements of violence and this idea of battling with the stick and she’s not very fond of this idea,” he says, referencing the Kobo Abe short story Rope he used to introduce Death Stranding’s approach to gameplay at E3 two years ago. “I explained to her is the aim of Death Stranding is not doing that - it has elements of it, of course - but rather it has this concept of pulling everyone together with ropes.”

Interestingly, the representation of Lindsay Wagner who appeared in the post-credits coda of the latest Death Stranding trailer has been digitally de-aged to look more like the actor Kojima remembers from his youth than the 68 year-old woman she is now.

“This was quite difficult and something I probably shouldn’t have tried for my first project,” he laughs. “A lot of my team members were opposed to this idea… Many movies including Rogue One and Tron have tried this de-aging process and some have got better results than others. For Lindsay we 3D scanned her but [de-ageing her using] computer graphics was quite challenging because we do everything in real time.

“But then we all went to see Blade Runner [2049] last year and [the digitally recreated version of Sean Young’s character] Rachael looked fantastic! We spent a lot of time watching the ‘making of…’ to see how they got those results - and it turns out they were doing the same process that we did…

“Lindsay Wagner has done a lot of movies but I think most people around of her have an impression of her from The Bionic Woman so for her scenes [in Death Stranding] we intentionally used lenses and lighting originally used in the ‘70s.”

There is, it transpires, also a justification within Death Stranding’s fiction for Wagner’s appearance but, inevitably, Kojima’s keeping it to himself. “I cannot just announce it here’, he says disappointingly. Instead our conversation turns to his approach to world building. The environments shown so far in each of the Death Stranding trailers have suggest an other-worldliness out of step with the more recognisably real-world settings of his Metal Gear games. How does he go about creating something like that from scratch?

“It’s a game so there are always four elements I constantly have in my head,” he explains. “First, what kind of world it is - the designs, the colours. Then the theme: what do you want people to get from there? The third element is the story. And gameplay is the fourth.

“All these four elements I think of on my own. I don’t think there are many people in the industry nowadays who think of this on their own but I have to. So if I wanted to create this room, for example, I start thinking what kind of people will be sitting here and what kind of conversation we’ll be having in here.

“At that point the details aren’t set so from there I start detailing each character. How will they be dressed? What kind of watches will they be wearing? What kind of label will be on the bottle of water? Adding each detail little by little. As long as the theme and the story and the game elements are solid through all of this than they should persevere. So many people have input because so many people participate in making the game that these pillars have to be really solid otherwise the game collapses in on itself.”

Given the overtly cinematic nature and scope of many of his games it’s often been said Kojima would be better suited to making movies instead. “I’d like to make a movie, for sure!” he reveals before lamenting the lack of time he has to do so on account of how much effort and energy he puts into making video games.

With his lively Twitter account and celebrity photos, one suspects Kojima also likes his status as one of gaming’s genuine auteurs and the attendant attention and fame it affords him. Before I can pose this question our interview is brought to a premature close two minutes ahead of schedule. The reason? So there is time to take a photograph stood next to Kojima... at his request. And why not enjoy it? Living every day like it was his last.

I’ve been considering how similar this game is to Metal Gear Survive. You’re roaming around a bleak alien-looking landscape, there are weird half-seen creatures in the mist, it looks like there are at least some survival elements in DS. I think it’s very likely that Kojima had some early concepts for this game knocking about when he was at Konami, and when he got booted, the company basically ordered the remaining team to follow the plans he left behind. Meanwhile, Kojima carried on with his plans and they eventually led to what we’ve seen today.

No

Kojima took the opportunity to distance himself from Konami’s forthcoming game Metal Gear Survive, a spin-off from Kojima’s acclaimed Metal Gear series. When asked whether the idea for Survive had come from Kojima himself, he replied, “That’s nothing to do with me!

“The Metal Gear games are about political fiction and espionage,” he continued. “Where do zombies fit in with that?”

Comrade Fakename

Well, I imagine that early concept didn’t have zombies in it? Or wasn’t a Metal Gear game? It seems pretty likely that Kojima would be pissed off with Konami and not want to endorse their game in any way.

I just think it’s interesting that in basic concept it looks like MG Survive and DS are somewhat similar (though obviously I expect the latter will be a thousand times better), and it hardly takes many outlandish theories to imagine a reason why that might be the case.
