DEATH STRANDING is the new AAA game in development from Hideo Kojima, one of the most famous/infamous videogame auteurs. It will be a Playstation 4 exclusive from his new Kojima Studios, with funding by Sony. A release date has not been set. BACKGROUND ON KOJIMA Hideo Kojima is best known for the Metal Gear series which he created and developed for Konami for almost 3 decades. Originally lauded for inventing the stealth genre, his later games got famous for having convoluted plots, magical realism and challenging artistic statements. Kojima may also be responsible for bringing a lot of the cinematic tools of Hollywood into videogames with his cinematic directing. Kojima has also been accused of being indulgent with time and budget, although his games have always made plenty of money on delivery and been praised for their gameplay and entertainment. He has often half-joked about wanting to break free from the Metal Gear franchise and try other things, and his acrimonious departure from Konami (for being indulgent with time and budget) may be the ripping off of the band-aid that he needed. When he shopped around for a new investor for his new studio, Sony quickly saw an opportunity and basically gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wants. Kojima is a huge fanboy of Hollywood stars and they seem to like him well enough so he is nabbing some great talent for this game. Side note: despite portraying women in a good light most of the time, Kojima sometimes says or does something knuckle-headed about women. Regarding Metal Gear Solid V, he got indignant when fans complained about Quiet's over-sexualized appearance. Recently he referred to Lindsay Wagner's 1970's self as her "perfect" version, which probably doesn't come across well as something you'd say to a 68 year old woman. :that's kojima: TRAILERS: First reveal trailer at E3 2016 (Norman Reedus and the funky fetus): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2nuHEGhwiw Game Awards 2016 trailer (Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo del Toro): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS9V12UcTeg Game Awards 2017 trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPL_E-TEtL8 E3 2018 trailer (Lea Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP3UngLFou4&t=336s WHAT WE OFFICIALLY/PROBABLY KNOW SO FAR E3 2018 interview with Hideo Kojima and Lindsay Wagner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJrdo71TpOw Death Stranding will de-emphasize combat, something that helped pitch the idea to Lindsay Wagner who had reservations about appearing in a violent videogame. Kojima says that Lindsay Wagner's character could only be played by the actress, so we can easily assume Tarantino style reference to Wagner's previous body of work (Bionic Woman) Guillermo del Toro's likeness will be appearing in the game, but will not be voiced or mocapped by him. Death Stranding is being built on the Decima Engine, which was developed by Guerilla Studios and most famously used in the very beautiful Horizon Zero Dawn. Already last year the two parties reported that Kojima Studios made improvements to the lighting in Decima. According to Kojima's panel at Playstation Experience 2016, Guerilla just handed him a box with their source code even before they had a contract, which left a big impression on him. Mads Mikkelsen reports being confused when Kojima told him the premise of the game Norman Reedus' character is named Sam Porter Bridges. He works as a Porter for a company called Bridges. There is a dangerous phenomenon called Timefall, which appears to refer to the rain. It appears to cause accelerated aging, as it hits Sam's hand and causes the skin to age, and caused a photograph to deteriorate. Presumably this explains why there are almost no buildings or large plants on the surface, and why they need special Porters to deliver things between human settlements. Lea Seydoux's character works for another company called Fragile Express. She attempts to hire Sam away. Mads Mikkelsen's character appears to resurrect dead World War 2 soldiers to do his bidding. Dying in the game appears to cause a Voidout, which is when you wake up alive again, but naked and in a crater. It appears that every time Sam dies, he gets a new handprint on his body Dying in the game appears to not reset you to your last saved game. Instead the timeline continues and you respawn in a lake-filled crater. The United States of America appears to be replaced by the United Cities of America There are invisible humanoid creatures which appear to be dangerous to humans. They sometimes appear as black shadowy phantoms with a cord coming out of them. The phantoms appear to be hunting humans, but have trouble seeing humans clearly. They appear to bumble around until they hear human noises. Sam covers his mouth when sneaking around them. Lea Seydoux's character says that Sam has a "chiral allergy." She also says that she and he have a condition called the "dooms," which can be measured in "levels." This may or may not refer to their ability to detect the phantoms. Lea Seydoux says she can see them, and Sam says he can sense their proximity, probably exhibited by his goosebumps. Lea Seydoux's outfit has some sort of ferro-fluid spikes. May or may not act like phantom proximity detectors because of their similarity to goosebumps. Sam has a photo of what appears to be an older version of himself, and older Lindsay Wagner and another woman who might be Lea Seydoux Lea Seydoux says that a "crypto-biote a day keeps the timefall away." Crypto-biotes appear to be small pink maggots that float around when Sam wakes up in a water-filled crater. In one of the trailers, Sam is seen vomiting out black crypto-biotes, which turn pink and float upwards in the air. SPECULATION Game Informer: What We Think We Figured Out From the Death Stranding E3 Trailer IGN: Everything you missed in the Death Stranding E3 trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inOQ6-3yd28 Might be garbage, might be obvious, but spoiler tagging just in case: The baby in a jar appears to be a way to survive being killed by invisible monsters. If you die, your baby, presumably a clone of you, grows up immediately and replaces you? The title might refer to being stranded somewhere without your clone baby, resulting in a final stranded state where you can't revive. Alternate theory: the title might refer to being stuck in a death loop where you can't die and are used as a zombie by the phantoms. One of the Porters is shown killing himself rather than be caught by the phantoms. Mads Mikkelsen's character uses zombies. Who knows? Death Stranding might also be a pun on "strands." Cords appear to be connecting Mads Mikkelsen with his zombie soldiers, and the phantoms appear to have strands coming out of them Message boards and Reddit threads have speculated that the phantoms might be other players haunting your game. Could be a longshot. Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 10:34 on Jun 16, 2018 |

BOOKMARKED My thoughts: Lea Seydoux is from a competitor or cross-purposes entity to Bridges. Fragile is the name of it. Not an enemy, but same goal different means. That’s why she asks if Sam wants to come work for her. Lindsay Wagner is Sam’s Mom or wife and he thinks she’s dead, but she’s like lost in time or nanomachines. I think maybe why there is a Bridges entity and a “working man” Sam Bridges is either timeline fuckery or we are playing past, present, and future. Working man Sam becomes CEO Sam. The themes here may lean more towards corporations rather than the government/military themes of Metal Gear. And the oil type substance suggests some environmentalism. The glass jar babies have something to do with rationalizing you getting to come back to life if you die. Like being undead in Dark Souls or something. Bet Norman Reedus’s baby is him. Need more Mads Mikkelson in future content imo. Look Sir Droids fucked around with this message at 22:21 on Jun 13, 2018 |

I have no idea if this game is gonna be a dumpster fire because no one is reigning in Kojima but at the very least it'll be an interesting and unique AAA game which is something of an oxymoron. Also you can't post the kojima backstory without his hilariously explanation for why Quiet was half naked in MGS5 and why gamers need to be shamed for being critical of him. if I could frame a tweet it would be that one. butt toenail grub also im hoping theres a lot of WW2 content because that just rubs me the right way in every way.

Done. Is there a "that's kojima" emoji? edit: my personal guess about the game is that time will kill us all eventually and that it's okay and that you might as well do something nice or cool before you die that will outlast you, like making a AAA videogame I will be a little disappointed if being fired from Konami isn't thematically worked into the story. One of my favorite things about Ratatouille was that the story was secretly a giant middle finger from Pixar to Disney back when they thought their exclusivity deal with Disney wasn't going to be renewed (creative master dies, his business is run by a soulless moneygrubber and a new creative prodigy struggles to make art in the company that wants to stifle creativity) Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 22:51 on Jun 13, 2018 |

Kojima has basically been held up by nerd narratives as a beautiful gaming god held back by those dastardly big companies, and could make the most perfect game if only he had all the time and money he needed, and I'm interested to see what happens now that that is actually the case. It also looks real fuckin' neat based on the stuff we've got so far, and I'm excited to play it! It's win-win!

I could be wrong, but I get concerned that the main reason why his games sold so well was that he tacked his crazy story ideas onto a mainstream-palatable action stealth game. Without shooty military action, I worry that Death Stranding might end up like Bladerunner 2049 or Annihilation, ambitious scifi pieces that reviewed well but didn't pull in mainstream bucks. God bless Sony and their deep pockets.

The whole "Timefall is rain that accelerates aging" isn't speculation I think. We see that guy rapidly age when the rain hits him in the first gameplay trailer. I'm really excited for this game. Being a lonely postman in a bleak atmospheric landscape is pretty much exactly where my head is at right now.

If the game is going to be about traveling/delivering/exploring I hope that they'll have a robust climbing system like Assassin's Creed Origins.

Since it's Decima I'm assuming it at least has everything that Horizon Zero Dawn has, which was basically Tomb Raidery climbing. The shot of a guy climbing a steep diagonal surface on all fours is an additional signature thing from HZD. I hope they go more realistic than Uncharted/TombRaider/HZD climbing. One of the things that takes me out of all three franchises is the super duper monkey climbing where you have enough arm power to jump ten feet straight up and grab another ledge

I’ve been considering how similar this game is to Metal Gear Survive. You’re roaming around a bleak alien-looking landscape, there are weird half-seen creatures in the mist, it looks like there are at least some survival elements in DS. I think it’s very likely that Kojima had some early concepts for this game knocking about when he was at Konami, and when he got booted, the company basically ordered the remaining team to follow the plans he left behind. Meanwhile, Kojima carried on with his plans and they eventually led to what we’ve seen today.

Well, I imagine that early concept didn’t have zombies in it? Or wasn’t a Metal Gear game? It seems pretty likely that Kojima would be pissed off with Konami and not want to endorse their game in any way. I just think it’s interesting that in basic concept it looks like MG Survive and DS are somewhat similar (though obviously I expect the latter will be a thousand times better), and it hardly takes many outlandish theories to imagine a reason why that might be the case.
