I found the first Jurassic Park on Blu for $6 over the weekend, it's a decent enough blu-ray but it's hampered by the usual Universal disc bloat. After not having seen it in 10-15 years, and I think the seams are definitely starting to show. It's not that it doesn't still look good, especially considering how old it is, I can just now detect the CGI more than I did back in the day.

There were a few things I observed in my old man state though. First is it's very much a disaster movie, a lot of the plot that I remember being removed or changed from the book streamlines it as such.

This leads to the second observation, which is exactly how little you actually see of the dinosaurs. Most shots are distant with either a physical model when the actors are interacting, or the few close ups filling in for the limitations of the models.

I watched the Blu on Saturday evening, and turned off the PS4, only to see Jurassic Park; NBC was coincidentally also showing Jurassic Park that evening.

I've noticed NBC spends more prime time air showing movies than any other network. They'll bust some out for Universal corporate synergy (like JP), but sometimes they'll just show, like, Fast Five for no discernable reason.

Although the blu was on sale to hype the new movie I just thought it was an amusing coincidence. I did think that the OTA broadcast looked decent, but the picture seemed more despeckled than the picture the disc

The standalone Jurassic Park Blu-ray has a pretty hideous transfer. They did a new one that looks gorgeous, but it's only available in the 3D pack.

I just ordered the 4K box set so I'll be watching it soon for the first time in at least a decade, but even as a 7 year old it was easy to tell because the CGI looked like actual animals and not giant puppets. But yeah, even the best special effects tend to age poorly.

I tried the original erotic one during the last sale and I just can't hold much interest in watching a whole porno movie, as fun as they are and as neat as it is seeing that sleaze in beautiful 1080P.

I'll just stick with the exploitation this time.

edit: Cry Wilderness is a bit of a waste since everyone's probably seen it on the Netflix MST3K.

Since I've got the package where they just send me all their blu's every month, I get them all. I can definitely understand a lack of interest in the erotica sets, I'm not that invested in them, but I do find them interesting to look at.

I have found that the best time to watch them is about 6am on Saturday morning. I'll be hungover, half asleep, and I don't have to pay close attention, so I can go feed the cat, take a beer poo poo, make breakfast, etc.

Not entirely, MST3K does edit their movies for time, so it might be a bit more "coherent." It does make me glad I didn't spring for it during the spring sale.

The nice thing about getting older is knowing when you're off the train with a franchise. After Furious 7 was fine but tonally weird, and F8 was just bad, I know "my" end to the F&F movies was 6, so if I see a 1-6 boxset I can just jump on it and not give a gently caress.

I mean, I really don't think that's a getting-older thing, I'm 23 and have basically the same opinion as you and am tentatively on board for F9. F7 was tonally weird because they had to redo bits of it in response to... you know (and the RIP Paul Walker stuff was a little incongruous with the shooty-bang fun times), and F8 was just a straight-up lovely movie that was markedly worse than any of the rest of the series prior. The beauty of this series, though, is that it constantly hopping directors means the next movie might legitimately be a hundred times better than the last; I don't think anyone saw Fast Five coming even if they liked the first four, I mean.

Not practically now, no, since the set won't be able to take advantage of the HDr stuff and resolution.

There's an argument for getting UHD sets that have a Blu+Digital for future proofing, and maybe because the code redemption will pop the UHD version into your account.

Speaking of the Xbox as a 4K blu ray player, does anyone have recommendations for a stand alone player in the $200 or less range? I'm getting sick of the Xbox not displaying HDR properly.

Edit: Should mention that I only need it to play movies, I don't care about fancy remotes or interactive features or anything like that. Just something that's going to give me a correct image with Atmos and DTS:X support is fine.

Edit 2: Just in case anyone asks, I'm not talking about the One S issue where every disc appeared grey/washed out on certain TVs. I have a One X which supposedly never had that issue, but some 4K discs are still dull compared to the standard blu ray. It might only be ones that have both HDR10 and Dolby Vision; I'm not entirely sure. I can check when I get home. But I can tell you that The Last Jedi 4K looks like crap compared to the 1080p blu ray. And I don't think it's my TV because HDR games look fine.

Yeah. You can get a decent HDTV in the 55" range for less than 500, easy. Just make sure they support HDR and if you care, the ones branded as RokuTVs usually dont have an OTA digital tuner.

You'll likely have slightly less HDMI ports, and a combo port for Composite/Component. The actual HDR scheme supported probs wont be Dolby Vision on the cheaper models, and they wont be as super bright as the more pricey models. I upgraded my curved Samsung last December due to a bad backlighting panel, and the new one had HDR and a way better menu system.

This seems like the important part but I don't know enough about HDR to know how important the difference is. That is, I know generally how important HDR is but you're saying that the brightness would be different on a cheaper model. I guess this all just happened pretty quickly and I took my eye off the ball. I remember just 3-5 months ago all of the 4k T.Vs in that price range were all the pre-HDR models that they were trying to unload as quickly as possible.

Not at this point. It's not like they're sending one out every month either, last year there was only 7 of them, and this year it'll be 4 in July (or 6 to 14 depending on if/how you include the 5 movie sets).

I suspect that they use those bundles as a funding boost for the year, and that the farther out things are, the more difficult it is for them to pin down exactly what will be released and when. It's probably a lot easier for them to say they'll send you at least X number of Blus in the next year, than it is to predict what will be released more than what looks like 3 months out.

On top of all that they're apparently a small enough operation that they had to shut down their website for two weeks to ship out their orders from the Labor Day sale. That's not to say that they won't be persuaded to offer that option in the future if there's enough demand for it, but it doesn't seem likely at the moment.

My advice is, just email them and express your interest in a porno free option, they have great customer service.

Dolby Vision is basically a layer that sits on top of HDR-10.

So there is a backwards compatible shell all HDR compliant TVs can read, and then what Dolby Vision does is make scene by scene adjustments to improve the overall image.

I haven't seen Dolby Vision myself, so I can't say if it is good or not, but I have not heard bad things. Some places have oversold it, but that is to be expected.

Another thing is not all UHDs have Dolby Vision. I think maybe most don't.

For me, if I had to buy a new TV, it would be a differentiator among TVs of the same or similar price, but it wouldn't be an absolute necessity.

I think anyone really concerned about that level of brightness probably will be looking at a QLED/OLED set with Dolby certification. The more expensive sets do things like SmartRemote voice/motion control, Bluetooth, Atmos, etc. DVision will probably settle in as a Premium Feature that isnt supported everywhere since there's licensing costs and whatnot.
The Dolby cert needs a minimum threshold of brightness/nits/whatevs, but I have a 2017 model Samsung and the thing is plenty loving bright for my living room. Havent noticed any lag with my game consoles either, though I did need some tweaking to get the HDR looking right the first few days. I totally would have spent $1200 to get a 75" tv, but I needed something I could pay off in a few months.

HDR is what replaced 3D as a feature, but now they're moving towards OLED/Q/XLed for richer blacks, and they quickly realized it's hard to see the benefits of HDR without a reference picture so making it a big item feature wasnt working.

With zero surprise, a new TV tech has been handled abysmally from the word go. My main TV is HDR10 only, all my gear is based around HDR10 and all UHD specs have to include an HDR10 track at minimum if they want to do HDR. So I’ve just decided to just not care about anything I don’t have.
