After a 4 year hiatus, everyone's favorite vampires Interpol are back with a new album.

First single:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KmIMuLh4Vs

My take: sounds like a return to form-ish? I always thought Antics and "The Specialist" were the high points of their catalogue, and this song reminds me of those.

They're also on tour:

JUNE
25– Wien, Austria – Arena Wien Open Air
26 – Sesta Al Reghena, Italy – Sexto Nplugged
27 – Zagreb, Croatia – INmusic Festival

JULY
1 – Glasgow, UK – TRNSMT festival
5 – Roskilde, Denmark – Roskilde Festival
7 – London, UK – Hyde Park – w/ The Cure

AUGUST
24 – Brooklyn, NY – House of Vans

SETEMBER
14-16 – Chicago, IL – Riot Fest

OCTOBER
4 – Los Angeles, CA – Hollywood Bowl – w/ The Kills, Sunflower Bean
6 – Berkeley, CA – Greek Theatre – w/ The Kills, Sunflower Bean

NOVEMBER
6 – Tokyo, Japan – Akasaka Blitz
14 – London, UK – Royal Albert Hall
24 – Copenhagen, Denmark – TAP1
29 – Paris, France – La Salle Pleyel

Bad At Everything
Hopefully this album is better than the last, but I did end up scoring tickets to the Berkeley date.

edit: ^^^^ I fuckin' love The Kills so I dearly hope I'm in Cali in time to catch it.

I thought El Pintor was at least slightly better than the self-titled, even if both of them are things I don't feel like ever listening to.

I still listen to the first three semi-regularly. I hated Turn on the Bright Lights when it came out, like hated it, and really the only reasons were that I was a snob who thought it was lame that they ripped off The Chameleons so blatantly, but also my friend who had bought it and I were drunk and kind of had already decided we were gonna dump on it because of how New York the whole thing came off.

After Antics blew me away I did go back to the first one and now I like it just fine, though it is a bit boring. Same with Our Love To Admire, it has some great songs but the sound palette is so monochrome and Paul's voice is, to put it diplomatically, "an acquired taste".

Oh, and here's them doing a remarkably cool 15-year pass on "Turn on the Bright Lights":

Aw man, I really liked the last one :( It's no Antics or Turn on the Bright Lights, but there were several really enjoyable songs on it.

I don't think I've ever really hated an Interpol release, just been disappointed by a couple. Like I have ZERO memory of the self-titled. I'm sure I listened to it at some point, but I can't remember anything about it.

Same. All I remember about it is that it had like, no hooks and sounded really by-the-numbers. El Pintor at least had a few gems on it.

Barricade is from the S/T right? That's a good song. Lights was pretty good too but that's all I remember from it.

El Pintor was a solid album.

This is true of everything from the second album onwards honestly.

Actually the new song is really good and so were the first three LP's. El Pintor was ok but LP4 literally put me to sleep the 2 times I listened to it.

OP you said Paul's voice is an acquired taste, what bugs me worst about Interpol is how Paul's vocals just keep getting worse. I think a lot of that is the vocals getting overproduced in the recording, but I wonder if he hurt his throat or something between LP1 and LP2 to make him start singing through his nose. I really miss that desperate, unpracticed quality from the first record. At least his lyrics are still great though, super evocative.

IIRC Paul actually has had a bunch of issues with his singing voice and smoking too much, though I might be thinking of someone else. I think he should do more low key vocalizing, like on songs like Next Exit.

I've always thought he has such a great lyrical style though.

So, nobody listened to it then? I'm not surprised :v:

Drink it up and hunker down
It's ok, nothing super memorable to me.

I did see them live last week and they still sound super tight!

It's strange to me that s/t doesn't have more fans than it does. It's got such a good/spooky feel to it. I think it flows better than any of the others.

I mostly agree. Though I thought a couple of tracks on Our Love To Admire were alright. Everything Interpol has done since just sounds tired.

Pretty much. El Pintor had some okay songs but in general they're a band that sounds like the day after an Ecstasy trip feels like

Pavement, of all bands, wrote the seminal lyric about Ecstasy:

"Ecstasy feels so good inside, now 5 hours later I'm chewin', screwin' myself with my hand."

Heaven restores you in life
You're coming with me
Through the aging, the fear and the strife
It's the smiling on the package
It's the faces in the sand
It's the thought that moves you upwards
Embracing me with two hands
Right will take you places
Yeah maybe to the beach
When your friends they do come crying
Tell them now your pleasure's set upon slow-release

I’m liking the album a whole lot more than El Pintor and the self-titled, and I’m seeing them tomorrow.

So that’s exciting.

I could understand this if the record were in any way memorable but, and I guess this makes it appropriately eponymous, it's just this kind of middling ideal of "this is a generic Interpol album"

I like it OK, there are a few standout tracks I really like, but it's not one of their best. I've always felt Interpol's odd albums are great and their even albums are kinda meh. TOTBL, OLTA, and El Pintor are all really solid with a lot of standouts, Antics is OK (all the songs are pretty good, but only 1 or 2 are great), self-titled felt boring and mailed-in, and Marauder is best described as "an Interpol album" aside from a couple bangers. So if that pattern holds up, I'm looking forward to a kickass Interpol album in 2022 or so.
