Turns out we're going to put the full cabinet details of every single hop on both ends of every cable. This will have zero downsides I am sure...

I've been on the opposite side of that meeting in an even more soul destroying way.

Turns out that when your primary call driver is "kids spending thousands on imaginary football players in FIFA games" or "buying all the CoD map packs" and the solution is "make it obvious that these cost real money" Activision and EA will happily sit on a conference call for hours and tell you that it's actually impossible and you just gotta do your job better.

I'm not authorized for remote work. Plus side, I get to go home at 2:30.

I'm not sure what Vogonesque procedure is needed for me to get remote work, but not having it means I'm not on call.

I love the freedom of working from home, I like to sleep in, and I don't like to dress up.

I'd happily show up at an office at 8 AM in a suit if it meant I never had to be on call again.

Our on calls aren't so bad, and I like the extra money.

Also, my work is a 20-minute walk from my home, so I tend to avoid working from home; I like the physical and psychological separation between my home and my work.

Yeah, what I generally say to people about it is "imagine how good you think it is... it is so much better."

And the only time I've gotten surprise called into HQ on the weekend I was on-call, anyhow.

Not having to worry about traffic or construction or accidents or game days (I work right next to two professional sports stadiums) or parking or late buses etc. means I don't have to leave home until 20 minutes before I have to be at work. Also, not having to own a car is great. Also don't have to worry about a DD for events that involve alcohol (not that we have a ton). Bad weather days kind of suck, but meh; I'm also the designated guy for inclement weather since I don't have to worry about driving a car across ice, but those are the days I get the most poo poo done.

I can just call in and say I'm working from home and everyone is fine with it. I could easily do it a few days a week if I wanted to and no one would care. A friend is getting a cornea transplant in a few weeks and doesn't have any family in the area, so I'm gonna work from the hospital for a couple of days; did the same thing when my roommate had to get his appendix out (my roommate works at the same place, and I just told my boss I was taking off to drive him to the doctor and she offered time off for the next couple of days if I needed it).

God, the more we talk about this, the more I realized how spoiled I am. I'm probably gonna have to leave this place for more money in a year or two, and I'm going to loving hate that. I've got it pretty dicked, environment-wise.

I have about a 10m walk as well, the worst thing I have to deal with is Greenpeace petitioners on corners. It's worth more than a few thousand bucks to me, and honestly I'm sometimes afraid that I'm going to let my career stagnate just to keep the nothing commute.

I do , when I have time. If I need to do something after work it’s not practical most of the time to bike home, shower, change, and drive to wherever.

Also I have a 3.5 mile bike ride on streets and a 7.5 mile scenic route on MUP. I’ll take the scenic when I want it - the short route in the afternoon has a lot of traffic and assholes who don’t respect bikes. I don’t walk to work anymore after days in a row of cars leaning on the horn and turning ahead of me against a red when I had the crosswalk. Not worth it.

I tried working from my mom's place up north a couple of weeks ago. She's on satellite internet. Everything was fine when I was working in email, chat, etc. But as soon as I had to SSH into something I noped the gently caress out of there. 660ms *average* round-trip means typing is a nightmare. Decided to take a half day after fighting with it for about 10 minutes.

Does anyone else have "Due dates" on tickets? This is a new thing for me, and I find them generally pointless.

Personal opinion is that as long as there is regular activity from our end, I'm happy.
Sure a ticket may have a hard date of needing completion, but that can just be listed in the ticket (Server must be installed on the 5th, etc).

Thoughts?

Depends on the ticket, and your departments policy WRT tickets the user doesn't respond to you on.
