then again I deliberately stalled before the last mission to grind out four KCs so that doesn't really say much other than I'm committed to my gimmick.

as a possible expansion or sequel thing, I'd love to some mechanism for players to shape finding the good poo poo aside from just hammering at the RNG lottery, especially when the pool of possible mechs expands.

I've mentioned something like this before, but: Something like "system rumors" that Darius picks up every time you jump somewhere (upgradeable bar on the Argo for better intel when) that you can choose to follow up on or not, and they lead into missions or small mission chains that can result in finding mech salvage or a small cache of DHS or something cool and rare. You're at 2/3 for your sweet rear end Warhammer and obviously desperate to get that thing going? Well Darius just heard a rumor from a mechtech about a Taurian facility with Warhammer parts two systems over...

It's very likely PGI paid Harmony Gold some "oh, just gently caress off" money because settling was probably cheaper than litigation holding up the release of Mechwarrior 5. But we don't know because the court files are closed.

This would actually be really cool, and a potentially meaningful money-sink for the post-game if the actual mission to get the really good loot was unpaid. You’d never sell stuff like DHS or whatever, so you still get a net benefit, but the time you spend jumping and chasing is a real risk-reward decision.

Yeah - exactly. These aren't contracts someone is hiring you for, it's you putting your own time and money on the line to go smash some pirates or something in the hopes you get it. And if there are mission chains, you can randomize some element of risk/reward by making the number of missions you'll have to go through to get the gear be unknown to start with. Can you afford up to three consecutive missions to get a lostech cache? Well, maybe. Low on cash so you roll the dice on the first and hope you get lucky? Up to you.

It'd be nice if you could trade in some of your faction/merc cred for favors instead of being numbers that inevitably go up. Intel to clarify/lock in how many skulls a mission really is, putting a few turns of delay on enemy reinforcements, allied units on the field to support. Hell, maybe an option to sneak in that last bit of salvage you need if you can stomach a hard hit to your reputation.

The part of the legal case that concerns me the most is what HBS and PGI can do with the assets going forward; if they cut a deal where no more unseen mechs will be made or ported over, then it's a bit of a hollow victory until 2020-1 when HG's license is up.

My AI mod is ready. It finally made me eject and withdraw in my test campaign. It's not prefect, but it should be more challenging than stock. Not being able to reserve spam the AI is a game changer once you hit 2.5 skulls and have to worry about turrets in Phase 1. I could use feedback, a lot of things are minimally tested. Play styles different than mine are needed to really put it through it's paces.

The guy that made modtek has offered to help manage the modtek side of things. So I'm going to start seeing if we can alter some of the AI code behind the curtains.

Also, I figured out how to have the AI play over the PvP network. I'm going to see if I can get two different AI builds to fight each other.

Just got the "bad intel" base defence mission for the first time. Decided this would be a good test for my shiny new Assault lance, which starts off by beating up a mixed medium-heavy lance. While this is ongoing, two more medium-heavy lances drop in, surround the base, and focus down the objective buildings, even while I'm getting in their faces. :gonk: Not sure that mission format is actually winnable, as programmed.

1. I don’t think so. This suit could be dismissed with prejudice but then they could enforce the settlement agreement as a matter of contract in a separate suit. Presumably they reached some sort of deal about how far the rights to the Macross robots go as a compromise, and if one party doesn’t honor the deal the other can still enforce it even if the suit the deal settled is dismissed with prejudice.

2. It depends on the settlement, which hasn’t been made public yet and might never be. It’s all about what they agreed to.

I feel mission design could be used to make very fast Lances viable without resorting to drop limits. What separates the LCT, COM, SDR, JR7 and CDA from the rest of the pack? Speed, that's all they offer. So a mission would have to require that to be completed, not just killing everything. But what about just bringing 4x AS7/KGC and killing everything like recovery/escort missions? It would need to be enough OpFor you couldn't possibly defeat with any one Lance, like a fully armored Company of good Heavy and Assault 'Mechs. I'm imagining something like a kind of recon mission on a map size somewhat larger than the average mission. You would have to gain LoS to all 12 enemy 'Mechs and extract, something something blah blah about doing this for an upcoming heavy strike would be the justification. Each Lance would be far apart (maybe guarding some building so they can't chase for eternity) and you would have to get in, get visuals (Senor Lock acceptable) and move on before you get swamped by all of them coming to your location. The OpFor would need to have one QKD or DRG to present enough of a problem against bringing 4x SHD/WVR/KTO at 5/8/5 speeds but lighter 6/9+ units would be able to break LoS before the hellfire rains down from the rest of the Lance.

I think there would be some problems scaling this kind of mission across the skull levels, and how to balance the salvage/cash rewards when you are not downing tons of equipment on purpose. But it's one possible mission type that would require very fast lights to do the recon work they were designed to do in the lore. This would also encourage hiring more light/locker pilots and keeping a fast lance ready in the bays instead of just your best 4 mechs and 6-8 elite bulwark pilots.

Once you got LOS to all the enemy mechs and the AI had to take their turns poo poo would start craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawling when the AI had to move 12 of them trying to chase your recon lance.

This game is the closest thing we've gotten to tabletop. Much like tabletop it does not deal well with company sized units due to turns taking forever.

Personally I'm OK with this. I always thought lance on lance was the most interesting way to do BT. I have really, REALLY enjoyed MC. That said, if you want to to multi-company affairs you really need to massively streamline and fundamentally change the core rules to make things move a lot faster. In a computer that means probably going RTS and automating a lot of things like firing, weapons selection, etc. Just order where to move and maybe what specific enemy to target if you don't want to just let them shoot at the first thing they see.

In other words Mech Commander.

edit: if you want to make lights/mediums viable the easiest way will always be with drop limits. It's also an easy way to balance, as total allowed enemy tonnage gives you a really simple metric to judge how difficult the mission is going to be and can create some interesting opportunities to force the player out of their comfort zone. This also lets you create scenarios like you're describing where the player is encouraged to avoid combat, but ultimately if you think you can take down that Atlas with a Jenner and a Commando YOLO.

Regarding drop limits/having a reason to keep lights around I still really like someone's suggestion of having the employer say something about "we don't want to alarm the locals / we don't want to seem too threatening/ we don't want to trigger an escalation" so the contact has a weight limit, and is obviously designed with that in mind.

The procedural missions sometimes throw out some interesting stories.

Started a new campaign post-patch. My first mission past getting the Argo was a two-skull base destruction in the arctic. I drop with a newbie in the Shadow Hawk (came with bulwark), Glitch in the Vindicator, Dekker in a lashed-together Panther (LL/LRM-10), and Behemoth in a LRM-boat Centurion. Almost immediately, we hit the garrison: a Jenner, a Commando, and two Panthers.

Within the first two rounds of combat, we've discovered that there's three light sniper turrets, including one at a subsidiary facility allowing it to provide cross-fire. And between the AC-2 shots and missiles, the new guy has taken multiple head hits and is down to one health. Despite the Centurion being a LRM-boat, I'm forced to move it up to try to tank hits, whereupon it promptly gets headshot by a Panther, leaving Behemoth sitting with 3 head structure between her and the outside air.

With the sniper turrets sitting up high and some distance away (not even in sensor range), I opt to try killing the light lance via brawling, sweating every set of turret shots on my mediums. I manage to clear the first set of enemies, though Dekker takes a head-hit as well. It's Glitch in the lead as our new tank as we slowly move up to the secondary turret and take it out before it can fire. The whole lance then turns toward the mountain where the facility and remaining turrets sit, with Glitch and Dekker jumping towards it while the other mechs sit in the forest.

Cue a notice of reinforcements: four light mechs coming up from behind us. On their entry turn, they take a torso off the Centurion (fortunately, the unweaponed side), and I'm caught in a cross-fire situation again. I keep Dekker on the hill to clear the turrets, while Glitch jumps back down to draw the incoming lance's fire. It's 3 Commandos and a Panther. One of the Commandos promptly hits Glitch's cockpit with a missile. I consider trying to win and run, but the facility has FIVE buildings that need to be killed.

In the end, we managed to clear the mission, coming away with no fewer than eight total pilot hits spread across all four pilots. Naturally, my side scored 0 head hits during the entire mission.

I took on a heavy/assault lance with my starting lineup right after getting the argo. We won but lost Glitch and Behemoth. Although we won the mission, I feel that ironman games should be considered lost if Glitch dies so I'm restarting. Medusa got max kills tho so lmao.

On that note, I'm really enjoying the hard difficulty mode.
